I am thinking to replace the i5-2430M of my Aspire 7750G with an i7-3612QM (or QE) i wonder if the CPU is compatible with the board/chipset ?

    Thanks

Short answer - no. You have Sandy Bridge based laptop so you have to look for i7 2xxxqm series cpu.

    A i7 2960xm or i7 2920xm is better than 3612qm.
Also if you use intel extreme tuning utility you can clock the CPU higher.
Of cause it depends on you laptop and cooling. But it can run at 4.0 GHz stable and if the cooling is good enough you can get it up to 4.6 ghz.

    Thanks.
I thought i should consider only 35W CPUs.(Factory installed CPU is i5-2430M) Maybe 45W ones are not a problem for the factory cooler and PSU to handle without any issues?

Can't tell exactly. But I would consider a 2860qm instead of the XM once.
The reason is you only have a 90watt PSU.
    I could find a Aspire 7750G with a factory installed i7 2670qm rated 45w.
So it won't be an issue with a 2860qm, just be sure to get some high quality thermal paste or liquid metal.
    I prefer thermal grizzly hydronaut.

just in case that you know, is it certain that 3612QM won't work on Acer 7750G board ? i know its ivy bridge but saw some reports some people installed ivy CPUs on HM65 boards - The thing is i can get the 3612QM for 65 euros and its 35W, while 2760M, 2820QM, are around 90-100 euros and 2860QM 130+ euros . And the performances are similar enough i think

I read once somewhere that adding support for Ivy Bridge on 6x chipset required rewriting bios almost entirely cos bios for sandy bridge had different structure or something. For this reason it was never done by laptop manufactures. I saw that only on server boards. But I might be wrong and might be single cases i laptops too.
When I checked bios release notes for 7750g, there are only talking about Sandy Bridge microcodes 206A7.

Sorry for the late reply, i just picked up again the search for a cpu upgrade and i would appreciate your input in order to avoid the hassle of buying some incompatible cpu.

I wanted to ask you, since i7-2670QM has been used by Acer on 7750g ,does that mean that the bios supports the 2860QM as well or its a possibility that the 2670qm is the latest recognizable i7 on the bios list?

And would i need to use a stronger than my current 90w power adapter if i install a 45w cpu ?

    Thank you again

And why not an i7-2720QM instead?

    https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?productIds=53469,50067

Its a bit faster, supports 1600Mhz memory, faster iGPU, supports VT-d and vPro, and costs around 60€ on eBay.

You should be fine with the 90W charger, but it would be best to grab a 120W one, so it will run cooler.

On the CPU side, just make sure your heatsink is flat and clean and use a decent thermal paste.
As far as I can tell your laptop uses 2 heatpipes on the heatsink, lots of laptops shipped i7 CPU's on single heatpipe heatsinks without over heating problems.

At most you might want to replace your fan, give its age the bearing wont be all that new, but besides that, the 2720QM is a pretty balanced upgrade given that its cheap because people associate the 20 in the part number with being a low end part number, so they sell for a lot less on eBay.

Its twice the performance for around 50-70€, if you can to achieve even better performance swap the RAM to 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM.

Wll it be ok with the BIOS ? ... I am already running 16GB of 1600Mhz dimms (at 1333 obviously)

It uses the same micro-code as your current CPU, its just a matter of swapping the CPU's.

Then on Windows to make sure it all works fine, go to the device manager after booting with the new CPU, and un-install the CPU, it will ask to restart and its done, so that it correctly identifies the new CPU capabilities.

Will do ;) btw, is there any reason my laptop won't run 32gb (2x16) RAM ?

It will not work as your CPU does not support it, there is nothing to change that.
As well, the QE is normally soldered, but PGA editions do exist due to some resourceful people. However, neither will work without a modded BIOS or Coreboot due to a chipset/microcode incompatibility. Your best bet is the 2960XM, or if you don't want to spend alot, anything above a 2675QM.

I'd say just get a 2720QM. I don't know where you're located but there's one for sale on Marktplaats (Dutch eBay, basically) as we speak.

Oh, and 16GB DDR3 (SO)DIMMs won't work, they only do on Broadwell.
