I have an acer aspire 4315 2963 and I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the motherboard. I read that the aspire 4715 motherboards are compatible. Are there any other motherboards that would fit into this laptop? If possible it would be great to get a motherboard that had a PGA988 socket, that way I could upgrade to one of the sandy bridge i5 processors. Thanks.

    You have to consider
-The form factor if it is totally identical.
-Cost of Upgrading vs getting a new unit.
If you are taking it as a hobby it will be fun and rewarding but rather expensive.

You should just buy a new laptop. Seriously. It's not gonna be more expensive, and saves you lots of hassle.

As said above, getting a new laptop will probably be easier.

If you got a new motherboard (if possible), it gets very costly when things go wrong. It's a totally different ballgame when it comes to laptops and motherboards compared to desktops.

As it's a motherboard from a different machine, the cooling system may be different, which would mean mods to the case and/or motherboard, and the ports may be configured differently, which would mean it would be incompatible, or a nightmare to get it to fit.

If you wanted to get a new machine, you could sell the old one to put towards it, or you could dismantle old machine and sell the bits on ebay, this could fetch a lot if all are in working order. The motherboard for instance, if in good working order, could fetch upwards of $100 as long as the buyers are there!!!

Thanks for the input guys. I emailed Acer with my question but I'm not expecting a reply anytime soon. I guess I'm used to working with desktops where motherboard form factors are standardized. I guess that with notebooks there are various different form factors with usb/ethernet/sd card ports in various locations. I was kind of hoping that motherboard form factors were somewhat similar within the same manufacturer but it seems that is not the case.
