    hey there,
i decided to finally buy the damn thing here in Hong Kong.
i leave to go back to Europe tomorrow but as I type now, i get what i think is fan whine coming from the right hand side of the laptop.

my disk blue light blips ever other second and I hear the fan do a kind of howling wind fan whine (though it's not super loud).

    is this normal?

My fan does not whine. You can hear it when it is in use, but no whine. My original HD did that constant access thing. I put in an SSD so have no idea how it works out.

maybe it's not a whine? it's just the sound of the fan?

fan seems to be quite active when I have 4 tabs on chrome open and ninite running an installer...

    maybe i'm just tripping?

update: it seems that the fan spins up and then down real quickly in correspondence with the disk access light...

    1.13 for bios

left side also runs warm while idle but maybe that's normal.

    thanks for the help!

My Toshiba MK6465GSX HDD makes a fan-like noise.

I thought it was the ATI GPU cooling fan at first but when I opened the notebook it was clear it was the HDD. The "intensity" of the noise corresponds with the HDD LED as you described.

Is it normal? I don't know. It sounds like an ordinary fan noise of a low intensity, however, it is quite disturbing at night. Does anybody else have this issue?

1:13 has no known fan issues. Does this happen when your unit is plugged in (the HD 5650 is on probably and you will feel heat out of the right vent) and is the unit idle? Heat out of the left side is normal as well but not much heat. At idle, even with the ATI GPU on, I get very little fan activity. It doesn't sound right. It should not be in sync with the hard drive. If you haven't left Hong Kong, I would think about swapping it for another unit.

hmmm, i upgraded the bios to 1.19.

still get that fan speed up / down on the right side but not as much...

i would swap it back but the rest of the unit is perfect. I'm happy with the screen, keyboard, cpu temps (running everest) etc.

edit: it definitely is still doing it now. especially just after opening the lid. chrome is open and that's it. the fan is definitely whining but it's very quiet (but audible).

here is a screenshot of my temps etc. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/396135/temps.png

As someone else previously stated here, it's the harddrive. I thought it was the ATI fan spinning up and down, because that one is on the right hand side too... but nop, it's the harddrive.

You can verify it by getting any spin-down utility for a harddrive of the web, and forcing your hdd to spin down.

The noise sounds like a fan indeed. Kind of like a fan which intermittently swaps to higher RPM and back to low again. But it is the drive. Drives me mad :D CPU is silent, GPU is silent, and the drive isn't.

At least I got rid of the horrid clicking noise with quietHDD.

Sounds like it's time to treat yourself to a new hard drive. :)

    Well I like the size :( 750GB... it's epic.

Noise + 750GB > quietSSD with just 100-200GB at most.

I've got my priorities sorted :p
