Sounds like cpu overheat...download hwmonitor and report the temps here - idle and after some heavy load(like game or something).
    Does it start after awhile?

if running XP you need something to alert the system to the system temps

    I8Kfangui

    works really well

First it works fine when the battery's empty i can charge it normally but after a while it just gets hot and then it shuts down completely, if i unplug and then plug in my adapter i can start it up again normallyi don't know if it's the motherboard i'll check temps and post it

I had a desktop which had a similar problem....and the cause was that the capacitors were at the end of their tether and were kind of swollen....!! so new ones were soldered in place of them..!! but I am not sure if there are capacitors on a notebook mobo.. :D

you should be able to remove the main battery ?
the mother board COMS battery is tiny and you need to take the laptop to bits to get to it.and if the coms battery is knackered the laptop wouldn't start.

just take out the main battery when the laptop is off.
then with mains charger plugged in start laptop.

ok i tested the temperature of my notebook at startup the temperatures were:
    Monitor:50 C (121 F)
    Processor:56 C (132 F)
    harddrive:31 C (87 F)

and a half hour later these are the temperatures:
    monitor: 50 C (121 F)
    Processor: 57 C (134 F)
    harddrive: 39 C (102 F)

(these temperatures are with only CPUID hardwaremonitor activated trough the whole process)
I will give the temperatures at high performance later

(it works normally when i get the battery out and adapter plugged in so that's not the problem)

Do a stress test with orthos and monitor hwmonitor's cpu temp. Its definitely sound like cpu overheat.

I did a stress test with orthos these are the temperatures:
    monitor: 60 C (139 F)
    processor: 68 C (154 F)
    harddrive: 45 C (112 F)

The startup temperatures are the same as the previous test these results are with the stress test of orthos

Nah..overheat excluded..It's normal for hdd to feel hot with 45ºC..and this temp is not dangerous. Maybe the problem is power related..Did you tried it without battery? Only powered by the ac adaptor..

move the laptop like it was on your lap just to see if you are covering air intake slots with legs/thighs.
easiest way to kill a laptop is block the air intake.
i use cooling pad or just use a tea tray so the vent holes are not covered.
or you could have a short circuit on the power board. :(

Now you say so it mostly happens when it's on my legs or on something soft maybe that's the only problem. and mostly it happens when i have a movie on so i'll look what happens on a normal surface with movie on.

we are just suggesting POSSIBLE causes for your problem,,

i personally think you may have a motherboard issue... if none of the other suggestions have gotten you anywhere,,, then it is most probably a hardware issue and will require sending to ACER..... IMO

come on Napalm we need some feedback mate :)
let us know what you have tried and it hasn't worked.
we are trying to make sure you don't have to start pulling the laptop to bits and spending cash.

I second the suggestion to unplug it, remove the battery and try again plugged in.

Also, put something at the edges of the bottom of the laptop so that there is plenty of airflow underneath it.

i'm having the same problem, mine has been out of service the past 6months due to HD Failure 1 month after i bought it at the Wally World Black Friday deal...had no time to send it in so i finally just bought a new HD for it.

I just pulled my battery and i can hear the fan running now, i am going to DL those programs mentioned on the earlier pages and check mine as well.

What i've noticed so far is the FAN stops running on me but there is no warning at all, it just shuts down. I checked the log the other day but don't remember what i saw (long days and 2 kids on my own at night) :)

FYI GREAT SITE WITH TONS OF INFO HER SO FAR!!

FYI i use mine on my lap quite a bit as well. I will keep the CPUID HW Monitor running at all times and make note of max temp.

Highest it's reached so far is 70 degrees C. Which brings me to my question of what is the cut off temp for the M530? I can't seem to find that info.

sounds like we need to remind some people that there are slots on the underside for the cooling of CPU/GPU and blocking them is not a good idea.
just by using a cooling pad you could give your laptop a couple of years more life. :D

i'm picking one up this weekend but it shut down on my wife last night, i was running it with no issues and put it into SLEEP mode, she got home and it was on for about 30min. she said and the fan wasn't running and it shut down. I know a cooling pad will help but i think i have bigger issues here.

bought it back in November, 1 month later the HD dies on me, i finally call ACER and they are like yea sure send it in and we will replace....i procrastinate so June rolls around and i say screw it and buy a 320GB Samsung HD, just installed it 2 weeks ago and it's been happening ever since then.

    Acer 5315-2153 VISTA BASIC
    No Bios updates
couple weeks, since i upgraded the HD in it and got it running again.

ok so you are running vista??
it was too slow for me on the factory config... so i downgraded...

anyway... upgrade your BIOS to version 1.33
it has newer temp control routines and the tempuratures reported are the correct ones

    support.acer-euro.com

stay away from 1.34 and 1.40 for right now.. some of us are having various issues.. but 1.33 was very good...
and the pan-am site is slow in posting new drivers and BIOS files.... we all use the euro site

i'd seriously consider taking the back cover off that thing...(4 screws)

    removing the fan (3 screws)

cleaning the fan and the heat transfer fins in back of the fan...

REMOVE BATTERY AND AC POWER BEFORE DISASSEMBLY

    that is just wrong.....

what BIOS are you running now??
reverting to 1.33 may be your best option... temps should be accurate and it has the fewest wierd little "quirks"...
