As Janek said the latest for the aspire 5100 series is 3.10. You can get it here. That is the direct link to the acer euro FTP for the aspire 5100 bios.

There is no need to find any outside flashing utilities just download the bios zip package from the FTP. Once you have it unzip the package completely and you will see 2 folders dos and windows. Open the windows folder and then run the file flash32.exe. Once it is run it will check your current Bios and then begin the flashing process. The Bios on the 5100 series has 17 blocks so once the program is running you will see it zeroing out each block and then reprogramming it with the new data. Once it is finished if you cannot move the mouse or the keyboard doesn't respond the program will restart the notebook in 30secs anyway. Once the notebook has restarted go into the Bios at the Post screen (press f2) and make sure that the version reported is version 3.10. Once you get back into windows you can delete the zip package you downloaded along with the other folders you would have extracted as they are no longer needed. That is it you are all done :).

You won't get any problems with memory upgrades after the Bios update if anything the latest version of the Bios probably fixed any memory issues that existed from before.

Caution: As always when flashing a Bios make sure your notebook is plugged in and that you have disabled(closed) any antivirus/firewall/anti-spyware along with any other software running as they may interfere with the flashing process.

I strongly suggest that you run a test on the memory that you have bought before you start resetting the CMOS. Clearing the CMOS will not fix your problems and will only reset the bios to factory settings (not really a cure for bluescreen errors if you have updated to the latest version). It really sounds as if you have a memory fault if it runs fine with the original RAM in it. To reset the bios means completely stripping the machine down (its hidden under a piece of plastic) and will not make any difference. Sound like their just trying to fob you off. Hope this helps

cool thanks i read somewhere that flashing the bios clears the cmos anyway , so thanks for that i suspect they are trying to take me for a fool i will tell them i cleared it anyway , i suppose it was possible that the bios needed updating , but, the memory still doesnt work , works for about 2 mins then blue screen with white flecks all over then restart, old ram works fine no problems at all , i have ran memtest on the ram it comes back ok no problems but i think the memory is duff anyway

    1. Some memory modules fail only after 12 hours of testing or more, so try to left memtest for night and see if it's still fine.

    2. Try to run CD/DVD bootable linux distribution (Knoppix, Ubuntu) and see if problem still ocurs.
