Xubuntu (with the XFCE desktop) or Zenwalk. For a complete list of distros, see www.distrowatch.com. Cheers

Have you tried Ubuntu 7.10 or Mint? As far as I know, in these versions, very little does NOT work. 7.10 really isn't a lot different than 7.04 as far as usage in general, IMO, but in what works immediately after installation, there is great improvement in the newer distro. As far as which distro specifically supports your modem, I don't even know how to make that determination. Sorry.

Not yet Rob, I have dialup so cannot download large distros, i rely on free discs on mags or purchase of cds and don't want to spend out more cash until i can be sure. Totally fed up with bloated windows but linux isn't there yet to make many like me change over, after all, we get Windows with the box we buy. I just want a light fast machine with basics but Acer is a pain, never assist or even reply to queries and don't even show my machine on their web sites!!! The BIOS is just about nil user friendly, no options so I can't even boot from a usb key despite three ports and now no linux distro I have tried yet can configure the AC97 soft modem stuff so i am stuck with XP. grrr

Ok, just loaded and tried 7.10, it shows the softmodem under hardware as ac97 at pci blah blah but does not offer internet tools under admin and when i go via networking the modem config pages do not find it under any port query. it is comm3 under windows.
is there any internet connection wizard you know of that is as basic as the windows one (server assigned, phone number, user name and password?)
i think i have found a dell driver for this modem if i need to load it in
thanks folks, keep helping or i will have to give up on Linux, i need the 'net badly and can't keep reloading win just to ask these questions ...!!!
