    this is the original thread.

    So...
the F4005 does not have the CPU to AGP option...
    I cleaned the heat sink
    Recheck ALL connections
added silver paste over the CPU and graphics chips

    I also
hit ALT + F10 and reinstalled factory image...and that seemed to help alot

    but still intermittant...

    the biggest clue:
under my R hand it gets really hot and that is when it starts to get whacky...
If I press down really hard just right of the touch pad, the image clears...when I let go back to whacky...

I think one of the video chips is right under there...could it be that it is overheating?

And once the computer is overheated it won't boot up.
a long spray of comp air, and it boots up clean...

what to do what to do...any suggestions on how to improve the cooling?

    MJ

I know people don't like to hear it, but i heard of this problem quite a few times now with Acer laptops. In most of the cases it is a videocard defect.

Could it be that your laptop was in sleep mode when it was in your backpack and that it somehow turned on and overheated?

Here's a link to a tutorial on how to monitor your vga temps, you could use Speedfan to monitor your other temps (cpu, hdd etc.).

well it makes me think heat/heatsink problems cuz if the computer is still it works fine...

but after a while the laptop heats up...and then crashes
or when I pick it up it crashes...

anyone update or modify the heat sinks?

my aspire 7110 which dosn't do much work used to get very hot to the right of the touchpad. now after making (shop bought wasn't good enough)my own cooling pad its been fine.
if you look under the right hand side of touch pad there's a small vent and the panel for the ram chips. that's where my fan for the cooling pad is located so it draws air over the ram chips and past the the CPU vent.
i have cured the heat issues and found i have less trouble with the graphics as well.
just waiting for warenty to run out before i modify the ram bay cover(more vent holes).

i had issues with the graphics going wacky and would lock up and cut out. now the ram which is shared is kept cool no more graphics problems.
Acer need to sort this out :(

i have literally resorted to hitting my laptop with my fist near the touch pad. after 10 or so restarts I get one good boot and works fine...then crashes...

so back to the fist pounding...WTF

tracing a dry solder can be tricky.but first try a cooling pad.it could just be a heat issue.hopefully :)

any clues to where it could be?
I assume the graphics chips are a good place to start...currently the laptop is working fine...but I am afraid to physically move it cuz I feel there is a loose connection.

    also it isn't running hot...

I don't think it is a heat sink issue cuz I tackled that a few time before with no improvement.

SO...can a bad cold solder be the cause of a hot graphics chip?
Also how do I track it down in case the computer goes kaput on me again. I did buy a magnifying glass and I do have a soldering iron...Just poke about and look??

    thanks

    fixed the issue

    replaced the motherboard
    works great now.
I used thermal paste instead of thermal tape that it originally came with.

as a not I noticed the white connector under the keyboard...with the rainbow cord. the connectore on the motherboard came loose during my swap. don't know if I did that or if that was the source of the problem. I did unplug and replug that wire many times during the times I tried to fix it, but this time it came off the mother board...maybe I just completed some breaks in the solder.
