I'm getting the 5672 with the centrino-duo proc in it, but I've read that XP Home cannot run more than one processor at a time. Can anyone confirm this? Will I have to upgrade to XP Pro to use both cores?

    No, no, no!
    It's all about the applications.
Photoshop CS2 for example runs using both cores, and fast :)
XP pro is no better than XP home for processor usage.
More and more apps will be using multi-core capability, and then you will see the serious performance increases.
In the meantime, dual core allows you to burn DVDs while surfing, word-processing, and watching a video - without slowing the computer down as it does with a single core. Worth every penny, IMHO.

xp home does not support hyper threading. Or more than one processor. Either upgrade to windows xp mce or windows xp pro

in xp home when you goto task manager your duo processor will be only displayed as one processor instead of two seperate ones.

orijin, you are incorrect. Xp Home will use your duo core processor just fine as will any addition of Windows. The confusion comes from the past when you once had two separate processors in separate sockets. Windows XP Home supports only one socket wheras Pro supports two. Luckily, all the new CPUs coming out having multiple cores on only ONE socket. When quad cores come out, XP Home will work as well. XP Home also supports hyperthreading just fine.

Please orijin do you have proof of this, as the ONLY difference between xphome and xppro are the Recovery tools (extra ones on pro) and the fact that Pro can be part of a domain.

Nah.. I'm running XP Home, and the task manager shows two separate CPUs. They both get used too.

    Creosote.

Ah...that's something that micro$oft.com doesn't even moention (not where I can see it anyways). It just says that dual proc PC's will not use both procs in XP home. If the only different is the number of sockets, we're golden!
    Thanks for the clarification.

I had the doubt abt running XP Home on the Core Duo. I contacted Intel abt it and also through another thread I found out that they are not 2 separate processors, but 2 cores on the same die. The XP home should work fine on the Core Duo.
Heres a link that will prove this
