Has anyone with one of the updated 5672's done a set of benchmarks yet? The one's i'm interested in are the standard 3Dmark 05 and 06 and the PCMark 05. The reason I'm asking is that when I did the benchmarks on my 5672 x1400, it did not fare to well compared to some of it's competitors.

If what you're referring to is the 567 3 which is essentially the 5672 with the X1600, I scored about 2.8k on 3DM05. Why? Cause the ones in Singapore come with 128MB of dedicated graphics RAM which honestly, isn't helpful to such a good GPU.

    Hey Technospaz,

I thought the 5673 in Singapore comes with T2400 processor while the 5672 comes with T2300. I am surprised to hear that 3DM05 score that low with such specs. Maybe you should explore using Omega Drivers.

    Cheers!

I think you overstate this GPU's power. First, the 256 only score about 200-300 points higher in 3dMark05, which is not that much. Second, since it only has 128-bit memory, it can't really address 256MB that well (hence the marginal increase in benchmarks) In real world preformance, I doubt you would see more than a few fps increase between the two.

**EDIT** I just realized that you were scoring 2800 in 3dMark05. That means your GPU is likely underclocked just as the MacBook Pro's is. Can you say what the stock clock is on your card? Normal clockspeed is 475/470 I believe.

Yeah, I was seriously disappointed with the 5673's performance graphics-wise. I had expected a better score and perhaps you're right, cashmonee, it may have been underclocked but I think quite a few of us in Singapore tried to remedy that without success. I don't recall what the 5673's clockspeeds were, unfortunately.

Anyhow, I've moved on since and now use the 8204 which has the X1600 with 256MB of graphics RAM. I score about 4.4k on 3DM05 which I'm most pleased with.

I did not do 06. the score i get was frm a 05. btw i'm on 2 gig ram. the diff btw 1 gig and 2 gig was marginal. 8204's x1600 can score a 05 with 4k+ with omega. 5672/3 stock was core 476 and mem 364. hope this info helps with the decision to invest in this laptop. anyway guys who brought this laptop in singapore are generally disappointed with the performance of the gpu.

I don't think people should buy an $1100 laptop and expect it to get the highest scores in benchmarks... IMO realworld application is what really counts. I've only had my 5672 for a day, but if it can run FEAR ("Computer" set to high and "Graphics" set to medium) well enough for me to play, then I'm quite pleased.

Blacklantern, that's the ideal approach. If the machine suits your gaming needs, then it's good enough :) Congrats on your new purchase.

Holy crap. ATI Tray Tools tells me my X1600 is only 64-bit and only 4 pipes! What is Acer trying to pull!? That pretty much explains the lousy benchmarks.

Well, considering the X1600 version only costs $10-$15 USD extra, you really can't ask for more.

BlackLantern (or anybody), are there any other trustworthy diag tools you might recommend so I can get to the bottom of this? I don't mind buying something.

I use the powerstrip to o/c. ATI tool and ATT dun work with x1600 in 5672/3. but it gets hang when u try to go higher than 400 for the mem clock.

What was the higher you could go in core/memory speeds without problem? Did you try 3DMark05 after that?

I have been seriously thinking about getting this notebook, but I am torn between going for the 2GB of RAM or the X1600. As I understand it, the RAM is easier to upgrade so I have been leaning towards that, but now I'm not so sure.

Are the benchmarks for the 5672 with the x1400 significantly lower than the one with the x1600? I know in general the card is much better, but if Acer crippled the card, is there a noticeable gain?

you can always add more ram, but you can't update the graphics card, unless you like get a new motherboard and other stuff which i am not even sure about.
