    hal.dll was corrupt and I followed the procedure as Using the Recovery Console .

    after I typed "bootcfg /default" R.C replied with the message "There are no boot entries, use '/add' or '/rebuild'". So I did that, but it then asked me , "enter Load Identifier..."? I did not know what to put in. so I typed '1', I also now know after it came up with the message "Enter OS"... I should have typed 'Windows Home edition' ,instead of help.

    Now unfortunately I have 2 boot sectors , and
    now windows sort of works ,but not the normal way. When it re-boots it comes up with
    the black screen and message "do you want windows to load off "1"., or "help" , bugger.

    Finally got back into my XP desktop ,but everything is now 12 times slower and Media Player 10 and Classic have become corrupt.

    I then re-installed MediaPlayer 10 , but can now play some video ,but not all , I checked to see if all my drivers were still intact and yes they are. Also MediaPlayer10 and classic will not play full screen mode anymore, even after re-installing it. PowerDvD6 still runs all my videos OK in Full screen.

    If anyone has any solutions how I can get the PC speed back ,and have MediaPlayer play videos again in full mode ,I would appreciate it.
    Even just to bring up Explorer takes about a minute now, as before it took halve a second or something.
    Also when I click to switch pc off ,it does not do this automatically anymore. It just comes up with the message "It is now safe to turn off your computer".

    sounds like you may have an issue w/ your registry as well?? just a thought

    you might even try to use SYSTEM RESTORE,, while it won't fix your issues with your boot sectors,,, it may help if you restore to a point before the error occured....

    and running FDISK /MBR from the recovery console might straighten out the boot issues....

    first i'd try the RESTORE option and see if that does any good...

    the FDISK /MBR i would save as a last ditch option before totally reloading the OS....

    and make sure you have any needed data backed-up!!

    later,
    bigO

    sounds like you have daul entry for boot menu

    also you cound do fixmbr from recovery console and fixboot

    if you want you can del you boot.ini and rebuild it in recovery console

    also when it ask for you identifer it just mean what it will show up as on boot menu

    I will do the FDISK /MBR and see how I go. Sytem restore has now been re-enabled so doing one now would be pointless considering its a fresh Restore point and all the earlier ones have dissapeared.
    Here is the boot.ini file, I was only able to have a look at boot.ini through
    Sytem Configurations and doing a file search including hidden ones failed to locate the boot.ini file.

    [boot loader]
    timeout=20
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="help" 1
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="1" ?

    also Im a bit worried about a taskbar proccess called "isass.exe" , which my
    Anti Virus checker is not notifying me about.

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="help" 1
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="1" ?

    change it to this

    [boot loader]
    timeout=0
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows"

    shound get rid of delay for menu at boot

    is the file you got lsass or issasser?

    Ok ,I finally got everything looking like before, and my speed back .

    Only problem I still have is the Media Players still do not play in full screen mode,
    like they used to do, what could be causing that ??

    all my drivers are still in tact. I used "security task manager" to delete the "isass.exe" virus.
