The operating system went into hibernation when the battery died and would not come out when plugged in again(blank screen after acer splash screen, but i am able to load bios) when booting to the vista cd, all i get is a black screen. i tried a win xp disc and was able to boot to this. I put the hard drive in my desktop computer and when i tried to boot to it i got the error message that the computer was in hibernation and unable to come out of this mode. I then formatted the partition and was still unable to boot to the vista cd so i installed xp, however... after the splash screen and the windows loading screen, i again get a black screen. i've tried
removing the battery and unplugging it for a while but nothing seems to work.
any help would be muchly appreciated

Can you try going to safe mode by pressing F8 after the BIOS screen? You just need to flush the hibernation cache.

that did not work. at this point we have formatted the drive, so when we start installing new os, window xp, it goes as far as the first reboot then nothing. black screen still keeps trying to install but no graphics just black. funny thing is when trying to boot to vista, nothing at all. i am assuming that the cache is in os or on the root.
thanks -
Im guessing one of your drivers didnt hibernate properly or the power was cut off.
If you have access to the command prompt.. you just need to type in powercfg.exe -h off or delete the hiberfil.sys file -
so this is what we've done-
did a low level format to erase absolutely every thing on the hdd,
then we tried to install vista again- still black screen nothing comes up (wont boot from the disk at all). started to install xp but when it reaches the windows splash screen for the first time theres nothing but black after that -also tried windows 7 and xp pro but always end up with a blank screen. appears to be more than just the hibernation file, any suggestions? -
It sounds like a bad HDD or bad RAM. If I were you I'd put them through some tests. The HDD - The Ultimate BootCD provide some tools though the best diagnostic tools you'll get from your HDD manufacturer. The RAM - memtest86+ is a nice diagnostic tool.

another good program to test your memory would be Microsoft's memory diagnostic program. You can install to a cd or floppy, and boot with this program. It does a good job of testing your memory and can help determine if it is the memory or the memory controller. It can be downloaded at: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
