i was playing Zuma Deluxe, and the lappy just shut down by itself. I felt the HDD section (in front, just under touchpad), and it was blazing hot. painful to touch even. the nearby RAM section was also blazing. im not sure why that is so, coz Zuma is nowhere near the most intensive game in the world, and my lappy should be more than adequate to handle that.
Acer Aspire 4935 specs:
Intel C2D T5800 2GHz (stock clock) Merom
3GB RAM (upgraded from 1GB. Slot 0: Kingston 2GB KVR, Slot 1: factory Samsung 1GB)

320GB WD Scorpio Blue

Defintely an overheating problem. Clean out the inside of laptop, using a can of compressed air to get rid of dust that may have built up over time. Also, reapply some thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU.
If that doesn't help, undervolt that sucker. -
Try using HWMonitor to find the hot culprit.
From my experience WD Scorpio Blue runs pretty hot as well. -
-
40+ to 50 degrees pretty hot for a notebook drive.
-
40-50 doesn't reflect it really...its far hotter than that. i said that it was painful to touch. my CPU alone is around 62C (idling!). I have cleaned the fans and all the vents. unfortunately in my country there's no such thing as compressed air cans... i use a vacuum cleaner =p
edit: also undervolted it. but not by much (RMclock won't let me) 1.36V (i think) to around 1.2V -
Could it be during assembly thermal paste wasn't applied properly?
-
probably bad air quality in the city...when i cleaned it 2 days ago, it was idling at 32C, now its back at 62... and the fans are quickly accumulating dust again.. but could be the thermal paste. oh and fyi, i don't think theres such thing as thermal paste in my country too. =(
-
And the WD Scorpio, as you said, it does get surprisingly hot. I thought it would be considerably less. -
Jakarta, Indonesia...
and i confirmed with HWmonitor that idling temps for the hdd is 50C , after gauntlet with Zuma, it gets to around 54C. thats seriously hot. the cpu idles at 57C, then again with zuma gets to around 64C.
strange high heat... -
^^ good news...i installed the Acer ePower Management (and just in case, the newest Intel INF Update for Series 4 Chipsets). Idling temps are:
CPU: 48
HDD:45
i guess this is problem solved then. -
Glad your lappie is not cooked.

You may also want to take the bottom panel off and removed the film from the vent holes. I had this issue with my Acer 5315. It had film that look like they had holes but it really didn't plus it had heavy black film on some vents.
I took off the panel and took a screw driver and took the film off never had another heat issue. -
hmmm..there is some near the RAM vents (right next to the HDD). should i take them off? i really dun wanna destroy my lappy if i can
btw thx Teejay 44 ^^ -
Acer makes some good stuff.
Like HP, Dell etc.....you only read of it here. When it breaks.
