What do you look for in a laptop? Because Ivé got the 1681 and havn't had a problem yet. Really nice laptop, heaps of extras and the one I got has a decent battery life.

What do you mean the 4501 is no more? I don't think it's discontinued yet. Have you tried NotebookOutlet.ca as I posted previously? They indicate it's an in stock item. Other users are still capable of getting this unit from the US, possibly even in Canada. It's possible the shop you're buying from no longer carries this model. Check the Acer Canada site, at the top, click on "Buy Acer". It'll give you a much of Canadian sites/companies that sell the Acer products.
The 1681 is exactly like the 4501 except for a few differences.
1. The battery is only a 4 cell battery, therefore only 2.5hrs runtime
2. The HDD is 60GB
3. No port on the back for optional Port Replicator
4. Casing has a lighter silver color while the 4501 is a darker silver/grey
You should be able to get a 4000 series battery (8cell) and swap it to give you approx 5hrs of runtime.

not wanting to steal the thread, but what exactly is a port replicator and what is it used for?
Since I'm only going to use my 1681 for mostly internet use, watching DVD's on a trip, light gaming and down the road automobile ECU programming would the fact that the 1681 doesn't have a port replicator be a problem?

what is this port replicator do in a laptop, what use and how importent is that?overall how good is 1681wlmi?

basically a Port Replicator is something you would put on your desk and slot your notebook into. The Port Replicator allows you to plug in all your peripherals to the back and provides for cable management. So when you get home with your laptop instead of spending 10 minutes hooking up your laptop to a mouse, monitor, ethernet cord and whatever other peripherals and cables you have you can just drop it into the Port Replicator and away you go...the replicator allows you to use all these peripherals right away. Here's one you can get for an IBM ThinkPad for example:

The Aspire 1681 doesn't have a Port Rep connector/option. If you want this option, you'd have to switch to the Travelmate 4501 (similar unit to the 1681).
Here's a picture for the Acer 4501.

im really enjoying mine, but watch out for that battery life... i mostly have mine plugged into the wall, so its not an issue, but make sure you understand that its only TWO HOURS. only other annoyances are a really flexy screen, and front mounted sound jack. if you have external speakers (which you should, cause the sound is HORRIFIC) youll permanently have something sticking out of the front of your comp. :|

My 1681 has bluetooth [
]I use it alongside my cell phone. In Australia we also get the 8 cell battery. Maybe order it from Australia.

I bought a 1681WLMi from Newegg about three weeks ago. Very happy with it. When I set out to buy a laptop I was ready to plunk $2700 down on a Sager NP8790, Just before I did I came across the 1681WLMi. It was onsale for $1289, specs looked decent and it weighs half as much as the Sager.
Pros:
Light
Good Looking
Feature Packed for a low price point
Solid Build Quality
Dothan!
Cons:
Out of the box the drive was partitioned with two 30GB FAT32 Partitions (I reformated it and installed XP Pro the day I got it.)
4200RPM Hard Drive
Low Battery Life with the 4 Cell battery.
All in all thought it can't be beat for being an excellent thin and mobile notebook while maintaining excellent gaming ability. You would be hard pressed to find a notebook that stradles both needs so well.
So far I have played GTA:VC, BF1942 with the FH Mod, and Medal of Honor. Plays them all easily with high details on. Found solutions to playing in widesdreen over at the wide screen gaming forum http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/phpBB2/index.php?c=3
I have made several DVD backups over the last week, it encodes very fast and the DVD burner makes backups that I haven't had any trouble using in any of my players.
I replaced the 4200RPM 60GB Hitachi with the 7200RPM Hitachi last week. The money was well worth it. Booting, Gaming, well everthing, flies now.
I also have plans to upgrade it to 1GB RAM soon.
The 8 Cell battery is the same as the battery used in the Travelmate 4000/4500 as I understand it. The Nerds.net has them for $133 http://www.thenerds.net/productpage.asp?un=272128&s=1
8 Cell battery should be good for 5 hours.
Granted it was $1289 to start I spent $142 on the 7200RPM Drive, RAM will be another $150, and anpother $133 for the battery. So I'll be in it $1712 which seems high however considering it'll be $1000 less than what I was going to buy with equal gaming performance, MUCH better mobile peformance (battery lasts an hour in the Sager), and it's lighter it's still a better deal for me.
Mine has Bluetooth Devices listed in Device Manager.

As long as it's listed in Device Manager, Bluetooth is included, otherwise it's not.

You may want to take a close look at the technical specs for the 4502. They may have jumped a few of the specs, but they also dropped some as well. In Canada for example, the video card is only an Intel Extreme Graphics 2, 15" LCD and no 3-in-1 media reader. Talk about going cheap on a unit. I guess the only option is a 1681WLMi with a 4000 series battery.
