I'm afraid that their may not be.. You could try a usb drive, but I seem to remember that it has to be the easylink.

ToRch, ya could do the install in a desktop assuming you have the hdd interface converter. if it were me, i'd copy the entire I386 folder to an I386 folder on the HDD and then run setup from the HDD... just getting the OS installed is only half your prob. once you switch the HDD to the laptop, when it boots for the first time it's going to detect all your laptop's hardware (it will be different from your desktop's hardware), so the os is going to was instant access to the CABS or installation files. since your CD ROM in the laptop is not going to be on the primary interface you may not have access to the CD ROM until after the OS can find and install drivers. that's why i say copy the entire I386 folder (for xp) or CABS folder (for WIN98). heck ya may even wanna copy the entire CD to the HDD while it's in the DESKTOP just so ya know you have access to everything on the CD. if you are trying to do all this w/ VISTA i can't give you any useful advice other than "Friends don't let friends use Vista, they shoot them- steal their PCs and downgrade the OS for optimum preformance"

    hope it helps...
let me know if ya need more help

buy the adapter, install notebook drive in desktop PC, ya may want to disconnect the DESTOP HDD so you know the following actions only occur to the laptop HDD.

At this point boot off the OS CD, install the OS as you normally would any PC.... when complete... i would make a directory (folder) c:\winxp_cd, then copy the entire cd contents to the folder you just created.

Then when the OS is installed and the source CD is copied to the folder (make sure you know the path to the folder, that's why i suggest
c:\winxp_cd) once you've done that, you can shut down the desktop remove the notebook HDD and re-attach the the desktop HDD to it's original cable.

Next reinstall the notebook HDD in the laptop. make sure the HDD is detected in the notebook bios. then boot the notebook. when it asks for drivers for the "new" laptop hardware it detects you can "specify location" and point it to c:\winxp_cd\I386 or c:\winxp_cd\I386\WIN32.

Those folders should contain all drivers WINXP ships with.

you may also wish to download any drivers you can find for the specific hardware contained in your laptop.

By the way is the laptop HDD a SATA type or is it the older 44 pin ATA type?
if it's the standard ATA type the above should work fine, but if it's the newer SATA (serial ATA) you may need an extra step install the OS while the laptop HDD is in the DESKTOP. but i assume by the fact that you need a cable adapter that you are dealing with a 44pin or 40 pin laptop HDD.

    hope this helps you out,
    good luck

good to see your back.. bad to hear you had a problem.,,

i have a feeling that your desktop is so different from the laptop it caused the bluescreen stop error you are recieving.

you may have to put the laptop HDD back in the desktop, as a secondary HDD
re-format the laptop HDD and be sure to check the box COPY STSTEM FILES,,

then after the format ... just copy the I386 folder of the CD(or copy the entire CD) to a folder on the laptop's HDD...

then replace the HDD in the laptop.. it should boot... change directorys to the folder we here you copied the cd's I386 folder.

    type setup and try agian..

try that and i'll check back in about 12 hrs...
    later,
    bigozone

right you are,,, sorry about that...

    click Start, then Run

type cmd , that should open a DOS window...

make sure you know the hdd's letter.. most likely D unless you have more than one HDD in the desktop before connecting the laptop

in the dos window type Format d: /s

make sure the drive letter in BLUE corresponds to the laptop hdd before hitting enter... that should format the drive with the files required to boot the Laptop

let me know if that works

well you could hook up the laptop HDD on the SECONDARY IDE channel as the secondary master... then make the CD drive a slave by changing it's jumper:

if you have 2 HDDs and then hook up the laptopHDD as a 3rd HDD the format command would be

    format E: /s

    hopefully we'll get there soon.

ok, updating news... i could connect the notebooks hdd to desktop, thats good, the bad, is that i couldnt format with sys files, so i format a sys floppy and copied files, but didnt work, then i was trying to find some boot disk to copy to hdd and looked if they can boot, but no success... so i think if i could copy a bunch of files to hdd so it can boot and then access to the win dir i could install...is there a mini os (no nix) that allow me to do that? or a kind of terminal... i was thinking maybe DOS... ok i ll wait for advices...
    thnx for all ur help

    wouldn't the format E: /s work??

try clicking start, run, type sys e:

those system files generally need to be copied by the OS it won't work just copying them there from a floppy or another hdd.. that's the reason for the SYS or SYSTEM command, and the reason the format command has the /S switch to allow the OS to copy the sysem files correctly and to set the Master Boot Record..
