A while back I an Acer Aspire 4315-2963 from Microcenter.

    Here are the specs...

I stumbled on this forum and read a few posts about how some of you put a dual core processor in it. I noticed that the Core 2 Duo T7100 was used and I had some questions.

    My first question is...

The current processor is a Intel Celeron 540 with a FSB speed of 533 MHz. The ram is also 533 MHz. However, the T7100 I want to use has a 800 MHz FSB. If I use this processor, won't I get problems with the processor having a faster FSB than the ram?

    My second question is...

If anyone has done this processor upgrade, can you see a difference in the battery life? Currently, with the Celeron processor, I get 1 hour 45 minutes of battery life. Will the T7100 extend the battery life?

It doesn't matter if the FSB is higher than the RAM frequency. RAM will be at 533 and FSB will be at 800.

One of the advantages of the Core 2 Duo is that you can undervolt, and improve battery life.

So the chipset (GL960) supports unlinked memory? Eek. Now I feel like such a noob for asking. I was always taught to match the FSB to the memory speed.

A few more questions. I've limited my choice of processor to either the T7100 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) or the T5550 (1.83 GHz, 667 MHz FSB). The speeds are about the same, but the FSB are different. Since my RAM is 533 MHz, there will probably be no point in getting the T7100 over the T5550 because the processor will be waiting on the RAM in either case, right? In either case, the processor speed will be downclocked to match the slower RAM speed, correct?

Also, I noticed that my RAM speed is at 533 MHz but the ram module clearly says PC2-5300s. I thought PC2-5300s is supposed to run at 667 MHz, so why is it running at 533 MHz?

No. As Andy already said so, the RAM is not limiting the CPU neither the CPU is limiting the RAM. If you upgrade to T7100 you'll get FSB800 and RAM667. I have GL960 chipset and upgraded to T7500 so I can confirm the above at 100%. Get the T7100(or better).
On a side note: If you're thinking to upgrade the RAM - don't. The GL960 chipset has a 2GB limit though it's possible that 3GB will work too. You CANNOT upgrade to more than 3GB.

There is something known as a Memory Multiplier or DRAM:FSB ratio. You can read about it on wikipedia.
