    I have an aspire 3003 with 256mb pc2700

a friend of mine has 2x 512mb pc2-4200 or 1gb pc2-5300, should I use them on this laptop?

If I mount a wrong model of ram, the laptop will damage or just doesn't power up?

DDR2 RAM wont work, your laptop is only capable of using DDR memory. The slot configurations are different between DDR and DDR2 memories. So, a DDR2 memory wont fit in a DDR slot and vice versa.
