Hi im a complete newbie to this help stuff and puters. I dropped my lappy and now my screen is screwed. Any helpful hints on what might be wrong. I do know a bit about electronics. My lappy is a acer 290 travelmate approx 3 years old.

    Hope I did this right.

Well after puter boots up i can see no graphic at all. I cant see icons, nor distinguish anything on the screen at all. I can tell that there is a light change and see vertical spectrum colored lines on some of the screen, while on the outside portion of both sides its black, looks almost like a broken out window, the shards of glass that remain are the black parts, the hole in the window is where you can see the lighting change.

ouch,, hate to say it but if you are seeing shards of glass under the screen you will have to replace the LCD... might be easier to replace the entire screen assembly.... but it may cost a bit.... if you are new to doing laptop repairs, unless you can find the exact replacement screen CHEAP on Ebay,, it might be smarter to look at buying a new laptop instead of repairing your older laptop...

this is the cheapest display i saw on EBAY for your model, they have several screen models/sizes for the TravelMate 290,, make sure you are getting the right siz/model if you buy one... this link even has instructions on how to replace it,, you might be able to do it yourself as long as you are careful and take your time..

i know NEW replacement screens can run upto $300, then you'll probably have to pay someone to replace it for you... check around
Acer Aspire 5315's can be found for between 399 and 699 depending on CPU, Screensize, and other options.

i wish you luck, you might find your part on ebay for $20,, i've seen some real deals there. it's all a matter of luck and timing.

    Browning mate.

if you do get a new screen and do the repairs yourself. please post back and let us know how you got on.
and if it all works out well. the next time we see a screen change problem.
you could be the man to sort it out. :D

thats how this forum works,if you have a good or bad result we need to know for future reference.

    all the best mate.
