hey everybody,
i'm going to buy a laptop in about a month - 2 months time and thinking about buying the gemstone 8930G, it's been announced that they're going to put a quad core processor 2.0Ghz in it.
should i buy one of these laptops.
things to take into consideration
does it get too hot too use on your lap?
does it have an a good sound system?
is the display good?
does it break down easily?
does acer have good support? (england)

thank u

Acer Canada shows that it's the 893 5G that will be getting the awesome power of the Core 2 Quad Q9000 at 2.0 GHz.
I wouldn't use the 8935 on my lap because it'd break my knees - it's 10 pounds heavy! (a full pound heavier than similar 8930s)
I can say that my Aspire 6920G has some of the best sound on a notebook I've ever heard. And since the Aspire 8930/8935 comes with a full 5.1 speaker system on board...
I love the glossy 1366x768 display on my system - the 1920x1080 on the 89xx series is reported to be just as good.
Can't answer the question about reliability.
And as for service, it's hit or miss. A member by the name of Kittie Rose had a real horror story with Acer Ireland trying to get her Aspire 6920G in good shape. Acer Canada does have good service, though. -

It will actually be hard to find a 8930G quad core because the 8935G will be available in the USA in June. The 8935G will be available in the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad versions just like the 8930 but the chassis will be a little different. The Quad core will come with 2 500 Gb Hd's while the Duo will have one 500 Gig Hd with a slot available to to add. Well looking at a laptop the more powerfull the components the shorter the battery life and the amount of heat. This laptop will be nothing for me because it weighs about half of my Acer AS9810 weights (17 LBS).
-
but is the heat hot already without the quad
-
We don't know - any 8930 owners out there looking to comment?
-
I have Acer 8930G using 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3, 2 x 120GB WD Black Scorpio hard drive and 9700M GT 512MB video card.
I disabled Nvidia's Powermizer to maximize the clock speed and no over-heat issues.
Playing Bioshock, Doom 3 and COD4 are sweet! -
Yes, Acer Aspire 6920G, 6930G, 6935G, 8920G & 8930G.........Have a serious but shockingly common problems of bad chassis design to provide cooling to GPU and because of which in gaming most time you would see temps around 75c - 76c....Now if thats okay to keep in your lap its up to you....Also, heard many complains like because of heat issues the GPU underclocks automatically drastically.....Giving lagging issues while game play...
So, there you go it deos have that problem of heat issues...All I can hope is 8935G coming in june would not have such problems....
To believe me what I am saying just google it on net and you will know that I am telling you the truth
Good luck -
And even then, that's not the absolute worst - start worrying when you hit 90 during gaming.
And the GPU downclocking is related to a CPU-based thermal trip in the 6920G ONLY. -
Imagine when a GPU will underclock then how come the temps will still rise but indeed come down because of lesser clock and memory frequency. -
Well, I've tested my lappy before (GPU - without copper mod (with thermal pads), overclocked, without notebook cooler), just to see the result - 110 degrees for 2 and a half hours of Bioshock play, no blue screens, no underclocks and etc.
Yeah, it was quite of a pushing, but I wanted to see how far, my new then GPU, can go
I'm not exactly proud of, just to show that mine doesn't underclock.
-
I have an Acer 8930G-7665. It's a Quad-Core 2GHz and a 9700M GT.
I am not happy with it. It works fine for blu-ray and the 18 inch screen is fine, but for gaming it overheats and downlocks the GPU and CPU and lags up games after only a few minutes.
Not acceptable.
I would recommend the Asus W90 or the latest Clevo 280M notebooks for gaming. For a couple hundred more you can get a really good one. -
Sameet is rite here...You dont have to defend what you have brought isnt wrong....I have Acer aspire 6930G with 9600M GT GDDR3 and it has got lag issues in game play.......The initial start for few minutes is superb but after a while the thing overheats and forces both CPU & GPU to underclock automatically..
Trust us its a major issue out here....Go for any other brand like Alienware, Dell or HP they are far far better then acer..
Also, all gemstone series have only one error thats the faulty chassis design insufficient to provide cooling to the GPU...
Good Luck -
Sorry, but I trust on what I see and what I saw, was quite impressive. My lappy is faaar away from a gaming monster, but it is pretty capable
But yeah, the cooling s**k big time, I agree on that one
-
Indeed the lags are just agonizing. Try games like dawn of war 2 or even C&C 3 and after few minutes you'l see what they mean. Wish I knew the w90 from asus came after a few months then I would've waited for that one
-
Hi, is this lag evident with a fresh install of either XP, Vista or Windows 7?
Chris -
-
thanks guys i think i might wait for the refreshed version of the dell studio xps 16 which may have a better cooling system if not then the asus n90
-
Why bother?? -
But the big question is "How" to do it?? Since, its hidden its next to impossible to find it out....I can bet disabling it will solve the issue of lagging for ever..
Please, all experts out thier suggest some solutions here to get rid of this feature powermizer.... -
Cheers,
Chris -
The problem lies with combined intensive CPU and GPU activity causing a thermal trip SOMEWHERE in the laptop, which causes the CPU to be throttled. And when the CPU is throttled, the GPU isn't fed as many frames to render, and thus downclocks to save power.
Patching PowerMizer on the GPU alone will NOT fix anything. -
DON'T EVEN TOUCH THIS CRAP - Sorry for my language but the only thing you can use this laptop for, is to throw it away.
I had this laptops for 4 months, and I couldn't find a souloution for the overheat problem. Acer can't make a good cooling system for such a good computer.
Don't buy this. When the 9700m reach 90 degrees, it downclocks itself to a GPU core on 160, that means in almost every game you will begin to lag. -
-
But I think the main reason was that the 32 bit version excluded the ram of the video card itself too. -
10 chars......
-
Uhm, lol?
I'm just sharing my personal experience with this computer. This computer gave me so much trouble, and it was a really hard process to get my money back. I don't want this guy to experience the same. -
I'd like to try and get an answer that's community-based (re: not expensive).
The temporary solution is to download and use RMClock, then when the downclock occurs, Alt-Tab out of the game to the RMClock window, and turn off all the Thermal Monitors on the Advanced tab (just turn them back on once you're done).
It works for me. -
Any of your suggestions to solve this problem are highly welcomed.... -
When I had the 8930G I put a big fan under the computer and guess what? It didn't worked. I tried everything. I had never been in the registry database though.
-
So, what did you do then...Because I am staying in middle east and its next to impossible for me to sell it at a fair price.........Its like I am stuck with it for a while atleast....What is the best option you suggest to me here?
-
First I sent it in to Acer, but they did only clean the fans! I laughed because the computer was only 2 weeks at that time! It didn't worked. After that I sent it in to the shop where I bought it, and they said it was because I played on too high graphics. I laughed again because this computer HAVE TO RUN COD4 in high graphics at a resoulution above 800 X 600.
What I did, was to go to the shop again, and say that the computer didn't meet my requirements and it wasn't a gamer-pc like they promised. They said there was nothing wrong with my computer, but after a little chit-chat I got a new smaller and less powerful laptop and the rest of the money back.
I suggest you try the same. -
I am located in oman.....I got my laptop from Dubai market from a local shop dealer here...It was my call to get this laptop at that time.....I dont even have the bills of payement for my laptop......
Though acer guys here when I had gone to them they punched in my name in thier system for 3yrs warranty...
I had given to acer guys and my laptop being 3months old they changed my CPU like replaced thinking cpu cooling thermals might be damaged.....They said its powerfull enough to play any games in medium to high setting no issue and they said problem presists then we will again replace your cpu...Dont worry you have 3yrs warranty..I mean how many times will I change my cpu....
I can only sell it locally here but its difficult to do so as thier is not much market here out. So, was looking for any suggestion as to how to live with it rite now..Please help me... -
Well, you could buy a cooling pad.
-
have that but no good...Problem with temps inside

After all, I feel for you guys, but the hate wont help anyone.

Hi, this thread is getting a little confusing now, it is about the 8930G, however there seems to be owners of the 6000 series posting, according to their sigs that is.
BTW, just played crysis at its default settings, yeah it gets hots, yes the fans kick in, but no lag as of yet..

. So internally it is the same too, heatsinks and air flow? Wonder why mine doesn't seem to exhibit the same issue, perhaps I'll play Crysis for longer and see...
Chris -
Hi, the dimemsions of the 6935 aren't quite the same as the 8930, according to these there is a slight difference
8930:
(W) x 300 (D) x 40.2/44.2 (H) mm
(17.4 x 11.8 x 1.58/1.74 inches)
4.1 kg (9.04 lbs.)
6935:
(W) x 275 (D) x 43.6/39.3 (H) mm
(15.13 x 10.81 x 1.71/1.55 inches)
3.5 kg (7.28 lbs.)
Taken from Acers own site

Hi, just got off playing Crysis for an hour, settings were at 1280x800 set to 'high' and no lag was present during normal gameplay. I'm running a bog standard Acer install with only small tweaks to the power settings, defrag and defender...
Chris -
I've got a 8930, with a fresh installation of 32-bit Vista. I play WoW on "Ultra" settings (unless I'm in Dalaran!
) and the vent on the left hand side gets very hot, but I've not noticed any lag at all.

Do you understand now? Please read my postes. I have already explained everything once.Click to expand...I think I've proved my 8930g is ok, as have other owners here now, and the cases are different from the 6930/5. I mean look at it, how can a case that has a 16" screen on it be the same size as one that has a 18.4" one, just isn't practical...
Chris -
I'm sorry if I sounded shirty
I'm really happy that your 8930 works like it should. I guess I had a bad GPU. The reason why I warned you were that I had bad experiences with it, and I also know other people who have the same issue like me.
Enjoy your computer! It has a great screen!
