How slow? How large are the pictures?

I think the max effective/actual rate is around 1.5Mb/Sec (12Mbits). Also it depends on Hi-Speed connections/transfer speeds, somewhere around 450Mbits.

Is the transfer speed not also affected by the read speed of the media itself?
