 hi guys i have an acer aspire 3690 which i gave a loan to someone and i got it back and didnt bother to use it for about a month but when i did i got a burning smell and smoke from the back. nothing on screen i unplugged and asssumed something had been spilled on it. (guy said nothing had happened ya bloody right but as i did not even try it after i got it back for a month i cant really pin it on him. Anyway i completely disassembled the laptop and looked at the mobo which had white powdery stuff around the back left side and there is a connection from the screen to mother board about quarter of an inch long which is badly burned on on side i will get some pics in the next while. but in the meantime can anyone give me any input as to what i could do with it will i need a new mobo or somethin or is there some way to test it. the white connection from screen to mobo is too badly burned to use the one in the mobo also badly burned

It looks like the notebook is scrap , the motherboard is toast and the video connector is burned so the lcd could be dead.

Do you have an accidental damage policy on your notebook?

Seriously it is cheaper to scrap it then repair it.
Motherboard is very expensive even on Ebay
Learn a lesson and not loan it to him next time.

Pretty much you'll end up probably replacing the LCD, probably replacing the cable, and problem replacing the motherboard. And you do not even know if those are the only problems with it either.

Not worth repairing if you don't have the accidental warranty. Scrap it.

Think on the positive side...now you have to go buy a more powerful computer.

The only positive thing that I can think of to say is that faulty laptops seem to go on ebay for almost as much or more than working ones. I've had a buying experience where I was watching 2 machines for spare parts for mine, and the faulty one went to a higher price than the good one. I bought the good one and sold mine on ebay.
A similar thing happened when I was selling. Now these were older machines, which might make a difference, but I'd screw it back together and advertise it quick.
