I've got an odd problem - my iPhone neither charges nor is recognised by USB2 on my 3810T. Tried same lead and phone on desktop and other PCs no problem. I'm running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit on both laptop and main PC.

My normal iPod classic connects and charges fine via the 3810T as do other peripherals like the external DVD-RW and memory sticks. Sony Ericsson mobile phone connects and charges too.

Can anyone explain this or has anyone either had the same problem or have connected successfully with an iPhone?

Sorry to bump so soon but I'm mystified by this - if it was a USB2 problem why does it work fine with other phones and peripherals?

I've got the same problem with my 1810t. The laptop sees the iphone, but won't connect. Win7 says it's a driver issue, but there's no drivers from Apple...

Was your iPhone recognised OK with Vista? I can't remember if mine was - I would surely have remembered if it hadn't but I take it for granted when stuff just works (if that makes sense!). If it's a driver issue how come W7 recognises and charges my iPod Classic?

stop press - brainwave: just tried my wife's iPod touch, that charges up just fine! Hmmm even more confused now but I think it confirms it's not a fault on the notebook and probably a win 7 and/or driver issue.

If it's a Win 7 and/or driver problem it's strange that the iPhone connects fine with the identical OS on a desktop.

Well after about 6 hours of trying different things, I finally fixed my issue!!! Now I'm not even 100% sure on what I did to fix it, the main thing I can figure is close all anti-virus software and uninstall/reinstall itunes... It worked for me... :D

I was having issues with Mcafee internet security 2010 beta - it was hogging the CPU and causing IE8 to stop working (in weird ways like links from search engines not working). I uninstalled it then reinstalled BT NetProtect (basically, Mcafee internet security) now IE8 works fine.

I'll try uninstalling my AV software and report back... thanks for the tip except are you now running without AV software?

I uninstalled BT NetProtect plus (aka Mcafee internet security) but unlike 1337brian it doesn't work. Which AV/firewall software are you using?

edit: Hmmm - I tried plugging the iPhone in with the 'devices' screen up and the iPhone appeared for a fraction of a second (long enough to be able to read what it was) then disappeared.

I unistalled McAfee but still had the problem. I haven't explored the Win 7 firewall - do you think that could be the problem? Has anyone else got any ideas or got the same problem?

TBH all I really want to do is to be able to charge it up every so often when I'm away from home. To not be able to connect isn't so bad but I'm still puzzled why it can't when the iPod touch and iPod classic can!?

Following a suggestion from a Mac users site I tried plugging in the iPhone before turning the laptop on.

As soon as it booted up the green battery sign on the iPhone lit up indicating that it was charging. As soon as the Windows 7 desktop appeared it went off again.

I'm still none the wiser but hopefully it could provide a clue what's going on?

Because other peripherals (including iPods) work fine and my iPhone works on other PCs with windows 7 AND charges (albeit briefly on startup) from this laptop I think it's unlikely to be a hardware problem.

I've tried uninstalling and disabling McAfee internet security but it made no difference.

This is really bugging me now!!

Crimson, was your iPhone recognised and could be charged in Vista?

I tried reverting back to BIOS 1.04 (from 1.10) but no different. I looked in the BIOS but there was no reference to USB activation (as there often is with desktop PCs).

When the iPhone is plugged in from boot-up it starts charging straight away as soon as the laptop POSTs. The charging indicator stays on during the black 'starting windows' splash screen and goes out just before the shiny W7 welcome screen comes on.

I'm troubled that the Win 7 64bit/iPhone combination must be quite common but I haven't heard of many people having this issue! Which leads me to believe it's not endemic and therefore might prove difficult to troubleshoot. I'm trying to avoid a Win 7 reinstall but that might be the next step. Sigh.

Do you guys have iTunes installed on the computer that won't recognize the iPhone?

If you do not, that's probably the issue.

Download & install iTunes and your computer should recognize your phone.

I had a similar problem when I upgraded from Vista to Win 7 64 bit. ITunes wouldn't recognize my iphone. The problem it turns out is that Win 7 was using a generic driver for the iphone instead of the Apple Mobile Device driver. And reinstalling itunes doesn't fix that.

The way to fix it is to go into the device manager and first find the iphone (most likely under the portable device category or something similar). Then go and choose update the driver manually.

Select the following folder to search for the driver.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers

It should find the right driver and install it. After that my iphone started working as it should.

    Good luck.

Hmmmm - tried all that - only "D:\" is listed under portable devices, no iPhone. It's not even getting far enough to load the driver.

Office was crashing on my new system, so I did a reformat and a completely new install of Windows 7 Ultimate. After that I installed all of my programs including iTunes. I plugged in my iPhone and it sync up perfectly. I'm not sure what happened, but it appears that whatever was causing my phone to not connect was deleted after I did a new install of Windows.

Got it now! When I checked under Device Manager/mylaptop/Portable Devices... all I saw was D:\ I tried your steps but nothing happened at all.

I just uninstalled D:\ then when I plugged in the iPhone it was recognised (but only as iPhone with a tiny ? by it) then reinstalled by browsing to the folder for the driver as you suggested and it installed.

Fantastic - problem solved! Rep point added to Fung and many thanks - I hope this thread helps someone else. Thanks also to the other contributors for the encouragement that it was likely to be a Windows 7 issue not some dire hardware fault!

I guess this is just a workaround until someone comes up with a definitive reason for this behaviour. It looks like a compatibility bug which Apple and Microsoft need to resolve.
