I just don't understand why people still BUY antivirus since AVG Free is out there and it just rocks!!
It must be because they don't know there is an excellent free alternative.

    Try the following free sw...

AV: AVG free, avira [best of free av imho], avast... can then use online scanner from kaspersky or bitdefender or trend micro for additional comfort

AS: AVG anti-spyware [good on demand scanner after trial period], spy bot 1.5, spyware blaster, ad aware se [not too sure about 2007 version]

Firewall: ZA free, Comodo [latest 3.0 bit talkative but latest update resolves somewhat], online armor, kerio sunbelt

Other sw: ccleaner, win defender for real time as [not the best but ok if use layer approach with on demand scans from other sw]

Normally stay away from all inclusive suites as take up alot of resources and don't have the best of as, av, fw, etc. plus not free.

    What else does everyone suggest?

flashlight, I don't know why you've had so many problems with your lappy but sure hope you get them all figured out.

    Here's my anti-malware strategy - use Linux!

OK, OK, my 5920 is dual-booting with vista so I had to address the soft underbelly.

First off, don't visit porn sites, music-sharing sites, professional wrestling websites, etc. Believe it or not, a researcher found more malware hanging around a professional wrestler's website than any others he visited. In other words, don't go asking for trouble.

Don't use Internet Explorer or Outlook Express. This is a critical part of my anti-malware strategy. These two programs are flawed and most malware is written to exploit those flaws. I can't say for sure how significant this is, but since going to Firefox a few years ago I haven't had a virus and spyware detections have dropped way off. So avoid IE and OE like the plague and use Firefox or Opera, and Thunderbird, Eudora, Evolution or what have you.

AVG. There may be better anti-virus programs but AVG works well with our dog-slow dial-up connection, isn't resource hungry like Norton, and has worked well enuf for us since starting with it several years ago.

Threatfire. MaximumPC just came out with a recommendation on this program. Unlike most anti-virus programs, it can actually run alongside your existing anti-virus, so I'm running AVG and Threatfire. TF doesn't require huge downloads all the time either.

    ZA for firewall.

For anti-spyware, currently using Windows Defender, Ad-Aware, and a2free. a2free's updates are the biggest by far, so those of you on dial-up need to keep on top of this. Have used spybot but often can't get thru to their servers for updates so it's not really used anymore.

Spyblaster because it keeps track of nasty websites and keeps you from going there.

I've even used mvphostsfile but this is more useful if you share the PC with kids, and they don't know when to stop. mvphostsfile also keeps a list of bad places and will not let the computer go to them. Updates a couple of times a month; the updates must be added to the computer's hostsfile.

Being on dial-up, it sometimes feels like I spend more time updating all this stuff than anything else, but I don't want to contemplate the alternative...
