hi , after replacing the hdd i have used the recovery disks to reinstall the operating system . all goes well - the last screen says
    -
" hard disk fully recovered " process is complete. please remove cd and press ok button . the system will begin to set up automatically. -

the laptop then reboots and displays the line -

    operating system not found .

i've tried a couple of times following the recovery instructions with the same results.

    please help

Out of curiosity can you boot into the operating system or even see it if you try safe mode? To boot into safe mode rapidly hit F8 after the bios splash screen. If you can't then I would suggest that you get ahold of a windows xp oem disk (home / pro /mce2k5 / tablet.... pick the version that came with your pc). and reinstall xp from scratch.

If your pc came with Win2000 or 98SE also do that :)

i've put an oem xp on it now.
whilst doing that i first had to reformat to get rid of the operating system that had been put on by the recovery disks - it was there , just not functioning for some reason.
i may well do some more fiddling with it . if i ever manage to find the problem i will post my findings.

    thanks for the advice
