I'm an future college student trying to decide on either the travelmate 802 and the aspire 2012LMi
    here are the specs:
    travelmate 802 aspire 2012
    1.5GHz pentium m 1.5GHz pentium m
    512MB 512MB
    40GB 60GB
    CDRW/DVD-ROM DVD+-RW
    ATI radeon 9000 64MB ATI Radeon 9700 64MB
    15in SXGA 15.4in WXGA
    802.11b 802.11b/g
    13in x 10.7in x 1.2in 14.2in x 10.7in x 1.3
    5.7 pounds 6.6 pounds
    $1550 $1575

i currently have a compaq presario desktop with athlon 2000 256MB 40GB, so i want to get a laptop that will last at least 3 years. i listen to music most of the time, im on the internet most of the time, i play games once in a while and watch videos once in a while. i will clearly be doing word processing often. Im not sure which one to pick cause Ive read many review from each of them and they both seem like excelent machines. Im not sure to go with the travelmate 802 since it doesnt support 802.11g but the aspire does, but the school campus has 802.11b. the hard dive isnt of much concern since my current hard drive is 40GB and is only 1/2 full. another concern is durbality and portability; I would like to get a notebook that would fit in my medium-sized backpack, keeping in mind that I will be carrying books and stuff. in this case i would go for the travelmate since its smaller, and the aspire sounds like it would be a mammoth and i wouldnt have enough room for other stuff in my backpack. the travelmate offers only CDRW/DVD while the aspire has DVD+-RW. i currently only burn CD's and watch DVD's, but with technology growing so quickly, the DVD+-RW sounds better since I will have my laptop for at least 3-4 years. the battery life Ive heard on both machines are the same. anybody PLEASE send any recommendations thanks alot!

I would go the for the aspire, mainly cause it will be more likely to last you spec wise much longer than the travelmate. Remember that notebooks are essentially not upgradable. With that in mind so I think that you will enjoy the aspire at play time alot more than the travelmate, that is DVDs will be nicer on the wide screen, and the 9700 will last/keep up with games for alot longer. eg try playing Far cry etc on a 9000, and you'll be wishin u got the 9700.
The downside as you noted is the extra weight & size, but 6.6 pounds is still a do-able weight, perhaps it a good excuse to get a new funky bag ?
    Anyway thats my poor advice
