i've got an extensa 4420 that is four days old. two hardware problems are troubling me. the dvd drive is a +R DL drive. i can't get any files to burn to a disc. i've tried CDs, +R and -R discs. i always get an error saying that it cannot complete the process. is there a special "DL" disc i should be using.

then, the scroll button below the touchpad stopped working on the second day. the left and right buttons still work but the middle scroll button does not. i tried reloading the driver for the touchpad and it didn't fix it.

does anyone have any potential solutions for my two problems?

    thanks in advance - coug

just windows vista. no special software. are there problems with just using windows with some machines? would a standalone program help me for burning?

i use the bundled software NTI as it does seem to do a better job than windows.
windows doesn't always see the disks.
the mouse/touchpad controls in control panel will let you set the middle control or use virtual scroll in touchpad settings.
its easier than the middle button.
or i use Pg Up/Pg Dn keys
EDIT: oops manners, Welcome to the acer boards and NBR.
    all the best,
    Phil :D

thanks for the help guys. i've got the virtual scrolling going which i didn't know you could do on this machine. however, my mouse properties only allow you to turn on/off all buttons. you can't choose the middle scroll button by itself. not a big concern now with the v. scrolling.

got the drive to write to a disk after trying with 6 discs and vista's burn capability. not sure why it took 6 tries. will try the bundled software next time. thanks for everyone's suggestions.
