So I've been doing some mad crazy upgrades to my aspire 7720 and recently I went on the hunt for a new cpu. Referencing this site (I asked about the upgradability and you guys kicked butt!) I was going to buy a t8300, but I found a t9400 ES for like 15 bucks cheaper. So I bought it today and now I'm having my doubts with compatiablity.

    Device manager says:

    I have bios v1.45

someone please tell me I didn't just make a very expensive mistake.

I'd have to disappoint you - T9400 is for the new Montevina platform(GL40,GM45,PM45) and it won't work with your Santa Rosa chipset. Santa Rosa support FSB up to 800Mhz and T9400 is a FSB 1066Mhz CPU. Some people says that the CPU will simply downclock to 800Mhz and will work but I don't think so...And even if it does downclock, I doubt the BIOS has Montevina CPU support.

Keep in mind I might be wrong here, I'm far from hardware expert.

Sorry to break it to you, but there's about a 99% chance that that CPU won't work. They are different generations of CPU - picture a Core i7 in a Core 2 Duo board. It won't work.

See of you can get an exchange from the seller.
And next time, do your research beforehand!!!

:( I totally did do my research, thats what started to misled me! lol. I initally had my eye set on a t8300 (found on on ebay for $150), made my bid and won. I kept reading the about the t9400 (or maybe it was the t9300...). Doesn't matter know I suppose. I'm trying to negotiate with the seller, but their english isn't very good.

    *UPDATE*
So I got my REFUND!! Ummm I think I saw a t9300 somewhere for really cheap haha. Thanks gals and guys!

By the way, your chipset support T9300 and T9500, both CPUs have FSB 800 and are surely supported by the chipset. However, there is always a change the BIOS doesn't support them.....
