I bought an Acer 5920 recently. I've never backed up a hard drive before. But somewhere in the included Acer software it was suggested I do so. I was using the AC adapter without the battery. In any case, a message window came on telling me the backup operation was in progress and would take something like one and a half hours to complete. I didn't want to wait that long to use the computer, but there was no cancel backup choice available. So I unplugged it. Then when I replugged the computer, I got an error message stating the hard drive could not be read (ctr alt del). Acer tech support attempted to get me to reboot the computer but nothing worked. In the end, following instructions, I shipped the computer to them for repair or replacement of the hard drive. My question is: did I do something to damage the hard drive?
