    I have a Acer aspire 3613wlmi with a 8x dvd writer

when i burn ( write ) a dvd, if i set speed at 4x or 8x it take more
    than 1 hour to finish.
it start slow, when it go at 3 or 4 X then buffer device drop
    and stay between 0 and 30 %
the speed go down at 0.7X for almost the rest of the dvd...
and the "quality" of the dvd is bad, a lot of error...

if i burn at 2x, it take 25-30 minutes and the buffer is neer 100%
it do the same thing in "test mode" without realy burning the dvd
(i suppose it is not a media problem).

i try 3 notebook, the first 3613wlci have a GWA-4082N drive and 2e and 3e have a sosw-833s all with the same problem

i update firmware of the drive, no change...
i update the ata controler driver form intel, no change...

it was not in PIO mode.
the HD is Ultra DMA mode 5 and
the dvd is Ultra DMA mode 2.
when i burn the CPU use is very low (0% to 5%)

    i need help!!!

my first one (before i exchange) gwa-4082n
    all with the same problem...

    media:
    i try TDK-R 16x and TDK+R 16x, verbatim -R 16x and Vakoss -R 16x

it do the same problem if i try with "test mode" (without realy write), it is why i do not think is was a media problem???

    I have a Ferrari, not a 3613...
I tested several different blanks on the weekend, happened to go visit a friend that had a whole bunch of different blanks...

TDK 8X would only go 4X
TDK 4X with a gold top would only go 1X
TDK 4X with silver top, same design as above, 4X
    Memorex 4X, 4X
    Memorex 16X, 8X
    Some no-name, he assumes Princo 8X, 4X
couple others were no name, mostly 4X

Try running a defrag on your hard drive so that the laptop does not have to search the hard drive to find the next bit of a file. Also, do you have anti-virus? Some do a scan on every file that you access, thereby slowing down drive access speeds. What software are you using to write? Some "free" software is speed disabled to force you to buy the full version.

yes for the defrag but i test 3 "new" notebook 3613wlmi

i put temporary file on the "empty" partition d:

    i stop anti-virus

i first try the NTI soft include from acer
    then: nero 6.3.0.2
    alcohol 120% 1.9.5
    imgburn
all do the same, one hour to burn a dvd

with imgburg you can see actual burnug speed,

with all soft if i ask for 4x or 8x, it start slow, then faster, after 2 or 3 minutes, the device buffer drop and the speed down to 0.7x for a while...

the DVD burn this way have a lot of error (0.7x is not a good speed form burning dvd)

i also try to install XP pro without any thing else
    and it do the same...

the only way i found is to burn at 2x, at this speed it end the job in 30 minutes...

Also... even if the media is rated for 16X, there are times where that won't mean it can handle all lower speeds...

i think this has to do with PIO / DMA mode on the DVD drive, which is the same problem i have on my ferrari system. i can't even get 1x to burn on Ritek G05 or Verbatim DVDr's, plus the real giveaway is the mouse movement & GUI response is stuttered & fragmented.

after flicking through a brief google search, it appears it might be self-inflicted. i was copying some cd's with big scratches recently into itunes, so that seems to be that DMA has been disabled in windows. uninstalling the 2ndary IDE device might do the trick, i'll see if it fixes itself that way. who knows, odder things have happened.

Trying some different discs isn't a bad idea.

    hey all,

I'm having the exact same trouble as forse1 as well as some others I have found on AfterDawn forums. Lots of details on this problem can be found at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/280367

Like forse1 said, the problem doesn't appear to be a media problem as the problem occurs when doing a test write only (no actual writing to the disc) so trying different media isn't going to help. Check out the link above for some posts from a couple of others with the same problem.

Anyway, I'm trying to get Acer's help with the problem but their "support" really sucks.
