In 4500 there is provision for Acer Media Bay . it says we can plug extra hardisk or Battery or Cd- drive by removing the orginal cdromd drive. For this does it need some special kind of drives or normal laptop hdd/cdrom drive [?]
One more question
4000 series also come with same motherboard and case so it should also have this funtion or am i wrong [?]
if not does this mean 4000series comes with non-removable drive ( In case i want to upgrade drive, is there any particular type i should go for)
Please tell the difference if any one know....
Hope venombite will have good answer for this

How do you take the cdromout in the 4001?
Mine is a 4002 but does not have the button that unlocks the bay (just like the 4500)... -
George,
Regarding the 4500 Series Media Bay. This is the slot where the optical drive is currently located. As you stated, the drive can be removed (modular) and swapped with another device. Acer has a hard drive and battery as optional items, but they haven't seemed to released any P/N's for anything that will fit in the bay (yet). If going with the 2nd HDD option, you'll have to get it from Acer/original Acer part for the unit. The HDD is a similar drive that you notebook already has, but you need a "mounting bracket" that the HDD mounts to and then both the drive & bracket gets inserted into the bay. For a different CDRom or DVD+/-RW drive, you just unscrew the current optical drive from its mounting bracket (if it has one) and attach the new drive and pop it in.
For the 4000 Series units, I believe Acer may have removed the Release Tab/Switch on these unit for the optical drive. Acer doesn't seem to indicate that these drives are modular. Acer probably just removed the switch and locked it down with 1 or 2 screws. You just need to figure out which screws to remove and you should be set.
To best optical drive to get is one that will fit the slot and connector. Try finding out the exact model/brand of your optical drive (Device Manager) and do a search on the web for its dimensions. Look for a replacement drive with similar dimensions and features you're look for and viola. You can also checkout www.UltraDrives.com and see if there's something there that appeals to you. If so, you can contact them and ask them if it'll fit your specific unit.
Hope this helps.

I have checked the service manual . There are two mother boards acutally one with only Cardbus only for (4000 seires) other with Cardbus and Smart Card reader(4500) so i guess the drive release knob is only available on ...4500 series
But lordyeray says his 4000 series have one..this adds up confusion...we will need more inputs for 4000 series users .
4k seris user plz give ur input
what is Acer MediaBay ? Does 4000 series have it?
