back on sept 2nd i bought this acer 5517 with vista home premium . i hated the vista and acer bloatware so i wiped the drive clean and put ubuntu on it. on the way home frm work today i checked mail and found the windows 7 upgrade arrived . inserting either disk does nothing the computer just boots into ubuntu. i can open the DVD and look at the files but can not run any. all the tutes written for installing windows 7 assume you already have windows on the machine which i dont. is this upgrade kit any good or should i just chuck it in the trash ? looked in the uprade disk files (the acer one with drivers) and i seen a bios folder so i dont think i have slic 2.1 on the bios either.

Did you blow away the Acer Recovery partition too? If not, use the BIOS D2D Recovery function to re-install the factory Vista just long enough to try the Vista upgrade disk again.

Finally, don't toss  that disk - instead dump a directory listing and post an attachment or screenshot here.

In your case, this is like a clean install of Windows 7 on your hard drive with an upgrade disc am I right? because you mentioned that you wiped clean the hard drive before you installed ubuntu...

give us an update if you are successful in doing a clean install with an upgrade disc. I am still waiting for my windows 7 upgrade disc and I am planning to perform a clean install of windows 7 with the upgrade disc I am waiting for. I have read so many ways to clean install windows 7 with an upgrade disc in other threads but most of the steps require tweaks here and there, I just want to know if there will be any problems to look forward to, in terms of partitioning, formatting and activating the upgrade license.

no problem as long as the boot order is set correctly. i used the upgrade DVD to do a clean install . note that when activating you must use the COA provided with the upgrade DVD. i tried to first use the OEM number posted in another thread that supposed to work for any acer that was eligable for the windows 7 upgrade and had a bios with slic 2.1 installed . this resulted in "this key is not valid". no problem with the key that came with the upgrade kit.
the kit came with 2 DVDs one of them had windows 7 32 bit only no 64 bit option. the other DVD contained drivers and apps for multiple models. i really did not need the drivers and app DVD as windows found most of the drivers on its own and just about everything works. the only thing was the speed scroll on the touch pad is not working but not a biggie.
