    its not that difficult
i think there is a guide also to this in the forums
look for it you'll find it
you just have to simply format your PC, boot from the windows xp CD and you're done
If you can elaborate your problem then we can give you a more precise solution.

You should have a driver disc that came with the notebook. That should have the majority of drivers on it. Some of those drivers may still work on Windows XP, and one of thoe may be the ethernet or wireless adapter drivers. From there, you should be able to install the rest of the drivers, once connected to the Internet.I f that still doesn't work, you may be able to use a friends computer, and write thr drivers to a disc, and then install them that way. Hope this helps.

If your drivers still don't work, run a program such as Unknown Device Identifier which should help you determine who made your nic, and then download a driver directly from the manufacturer (Intel, Realtek, etc).

I agree with you that the Acer support is crap. I've e-mailed them a support question a couple of weeks ago and have yet to hear anything back.

what sucks with vista, is you dont get a key included with the cd-vista, you have to call microsoft and get the key through them.

not that i know of. now dont quote me but this is what i have heard. i have not ever seen a vista preloaded computer before to see whether or not it had a tag on the bottom like xp.

this is only if it came preloaded with vista, and you want to do a reinstall of vista.

Why oh why did you spend extra to buy a laptop with Vista and then downgrade to XP?

My g/f's 5100 came with vista premium. The key is right on the bottom of the notebook as I believe all PC notebook manufactures put them.

If you kept your PQSERVICE partition you can run eRecovery (Download from Acer website if needed) and then run it and choose "Reinstall software or drivers, then select "drivers" and it should install all drivers, they MAY work with XP. Give it a shot.

Because it doesn't cost extra, most manufacturers will make you have Vista, you get no choice and many do not sell Windows XP laptops anymore.

Dell give the option in the UK to have XP installed instead, these are one of the few exceptions. As far as I know they offer this on all their computers now.

If all else fails do this:

    - Restore Windows Vista
    - Download _all_ the Windows XP drivers for the 5580 from Acer's website (they are there, I just checked).
    - Burn drivers on a CD or put them in a folder on the disk where you can find them later, like d:\drivers or something.
    - Install WinXP with the install disk
    - Install all the drivers.

You should be good to go.

For next time, remember to download the drivers _before_ trying to install a new OS ;)
