I have the Aspire 5050-3785, and I'm running XP on it. Much better than Vista. I can actually play games like Warhammer 40k and GTA Vice City at 1280x800, and watch perfectly fluid HDTV with a USB tuner on it now (I couldn't do those things under Vista with this notebook).
You can find most of the drivers you need on Acer's website:
http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/acerdrivers/bin/drivers.html?CFID=4778231&CFTOKEN=25220389
Select "Notebook", then "Aspire 5050", and you will see a list of drivers for the various devices, both XP & Vista. Download the following: card reader/cardbus driver; modem driver; Realtek audio driver; Realtek LAN driver; and Synaptics touchpad driver. Make sure that you are selecting the XP versions of these drivers.
Next, change the selected notebook model to Aspire 5100, and download the Atheros Wireless LAN Driver v5.3.0.67 driver. (Do NOT download the Atheros driver in the 5050 section, because it's the wrong one for the 5050-3785).
Finally, go to ATI's site and download the latest XP drivers for the Radeon Xpress 1100:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp
I think that covers it. I didn't bother with getting any of the Acer apps, because I feel they just bog down performance, and I just wanted a lean XP install. Device manager shows everything is installed correctly, with no question marks or exclamation points.
Hope this helps. -
Yokozuna you are the best~!!!!! I cant even explain the joy and excitement I felt as I was reading you solutions to my problem x)~ But I was wondering about the bluetooth driver and the dvd and cd burner??? and I also realized that you didnt bother downloading the cpu driver??? hope you get back to me again~!!! and thanks a million~!!!! xD

My 5050-3785 doesn't have bluetooth, so I assume that yours doesn't either. The DVD burner doesn't need any drivers for XP. You only need software that recognizes it, e.g., Nero 7.1, which is what I use. I tried the CPU driver, which is a CPU throttling utility, but I found that it didn't work well for me. It didn't seem to intelligently manage clock speeds in relation to workload. It constantly switched speeds, even when the computer was idle, and it didn't throttle all the way up when it should have.
Instead, I use Rightmark CPU Clock utility, a free program that gives the user total control over CPU speeds and voltages. I have my Acer set up so that it runs at 800 MHz unless more CPU power is needed, e.g., gaming or HDTV viewing, at which point it automatically switches to 2.2 GHz. This is the "performance on demand" profile in Rightmark. I find that this is the best way to combine low temps, prolonged battery life, and high performance as needed. BTW, I can watch DVDs just fine with PowerDVD at 800 MHz, which allows me to watch an entire movie on battery power.
You can get Rightmark here:
http://cpu.rightmark.org/download/rmclock_230_bin_upd1.exe
And you should read this tutorial on how to use the program effectively here:
http://winhlp.com/rmclock.htm
Good luck in getting your 5050-3785 working in XP the way you want. -
Wow you are awesome~!!!! Man thanks for everything! my aspire is sooo much better now with the xp and all the drivers you got me, and Im very impressed with you knowledge on so much computer things~!!! Thanks for the cpu info and everything else~!! thanks a gazillion~!!!!

Does anyone have the a link or info as to how I might replace Windows with Linux on my Acer Aspire 5050-3785 and get drivers for it as well I have been needing these for weeks now
-
I have loaded Ubuntu Linux on several acer computers with no troubles. Linux will find the hardware without the need for drivers, even the built in WiFi worked out of the box. Download ubuntu from the web site, make the ISO file into a CD (A live CD at that) and load. With the live CD you can try it before you install it. Good Luck. Henry

downloaded and installed from cd ubuntu on to my Acer Aspire 5050-3785
it wont read my acer built in wifi card or my ATI 1100 card
I am a complete newb to linux and would love to know a fix for this, checked ubuntu forums but afraid I can't understand half the stuff they post in there it's sad -
i also have a problem with my 5050. i had vista, installed the synaptics driver from the acer panam site for the 5050, and had the little joystick in the middle of bottom of the touchpad work for scrolling. i went back to xp 32 bits (i chose to use 32bits because i couldnt get some programs that i like to install on a 64bit system), and now i the little joystick doesnt work anymore except to act as a left click. anyone know how to get it to scroll in xp?
xp installed into acer aspire 5050-3785
