Small update. I got 295.51 to load finally after a night of tinkering. I too have the GF116. Although, I am not going to upload my changes due to the fact that it appears to be running terribly.
FPS is very low, something cannot be correct.

by able to LOAD you mean install it and its working properly? by properly, i mean are you able to change SCREEN RESOLUTION via the NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL and its not just one screen resolution (800x600) showing?

By load I mean install. Yes, I can change the resolution. Only issue is when trying to play a game I get LOW FPS, even after white-listing the game. So therefor I say it is not working.

practically spent the last 4 hours trying to update to 295.51 with no success.

tried the newly released MODDED FILES from LAPTOP2GO with also no luck.

i have updated the intel graphics driver as well to 8.15.10.2509 which i thought would be THE ANSWER! well so much for wishful thinking.

now, im just thinking if its worth the time to call ALIENWARE TECH SUPPORT or will they just tell me to do what i have already tried or worse, they will just tell me BETA NVIDIA drivers are not supported?

Well seeing as our Hardware ID is not in the INF, I'd say no.

For people wondering if the NVIDIA beta driver 295.51 is worth the install I'd say no, definitely not. I actually saw worse performance when it actually worked, and later somehow it managed to really screw thing up, my computer would start to lag (not even on a game just regular usage) and programs would become unresponsive and crash, and eventually after about 2 or 3 minutes the computer would completely freeze up and I'd have to hold the power down. There was really no way around it besides installing a different driver, I installed 290.53 as soon as the computer turned on and restarted. Everything was fine after that so it must have been the 295.51 driver.

Well with my 2 cents, I find this driver decent, I had zero problems installing it, I downloaded from nvidia and installed, nothing else. I cannot say if it is much better than the last driver, I dont benchmark or keep track of fps, but I felt like there is slightly less stuttering in swtor. I cannot really say much more than this driver is working fine FOR ME, dunno why others are having a hard time.

think this boils down to whether you have a 1.5 or 3gb 555m, and if you are on 3gb, its whether you have a later or newer version of the card.

i think its when you have the newer 3gb version that you will have problems updating to the newer NVIDIA drivers, be it beta or official releases.

Ive installed this on my M15x and M11xr3 and have to say these drivers have dropped performance by atleast 15+ FPS and will not be installing them on my wifes M14x.

Saw no advantage to theses other than the set FXAA support. But they buggered up Skyrim so it wouldn't launch for me - back to 290.53 beta and all is right in the wold again :)

Sorry, I ask variations on this question every five minutes LOL This is for someone I'm trying to help though-the M14x is what she wants, and probably the best thing in her budget. My only hesitation recommending it is the switchable graphics...want to be sure you can uninstall the stock drivers and the normal Nvidia.com drivers will go on fine, and there's no known issues with the M14x.

    doubt that.

thats been a prevalent problem. as per my experience, depending on which gpu you will have on your m14x, you cannot just install an NVIDIA driver unless it is modified.

even if you get to install the modified file, there is no guarantee that it will run fine.

now, depending on what your friend needs the laptop for, the stock intel drivers are fine as from what i am currently experiencing. they say once, needed, the NVIDIA OPTIMUS technology kicks in and is usually the case when gaming or running graphic intensive software.

    hope this helps.

so I couldn't get any drivers to install until I used this inf. i have the newer chip and 3GB. shocking that nvidia don't support their own kit with their own drivers.

So is this not working because of Optimus? Or is this not working just because Nvidia's newest drivers are October 24th?

They list the GT 555 on the drop down list, so I'm guessing it's that it uses Optmus?

At any rate, I appreciate the feedback...I'm not comfortable recommending this to her if it can't use undoctored drivers...assuming it's not just that the GPU is too new and the next drivers will support it.

I assume this applies to the GTX 580 on the M17x too? Darn...

what is she going to use the LAPTOP for? gaming? will she overclock it? if neither then the stock 269.37 should be fine.

the unmodded/modded drivers presumably does not work because DELL does not support it.

Yeah, she's looking at this heavily because of gaming. I figure this probably has better than average cooling for the price point too.

But she (and I) aren't real comfortable with a new system that can't use Nvidia's drivers (or AMD as the case may be) :(

    That's why I didn't/haven't bought an M17x-R3 actually. :(

oh for gaming! well then definitely BUT there has been user's here successfully installing BETA and OFFICIAL releases. just boils down to type of GPU card you are getting.

seems like either the 1.5 GB or the older 3 GB GT555M versions work with no hitches.

Oh weird...so in that case the newer 3GB one is maybe a newer part not in Nvidia's drivers yet? So maybe it's NOT an Optimus issue?

(And maybe I *CAN* buy an M17x-R3 with Optimus and have it just install okay?)

i dont think anyone has mentioned about OPTIMUS feature issues. its just having to update the NVIDIA drivers on top of the base 269.37 on a NEWER 3GB GT555M GPU CARD.

you may want to just configure the M17X with a different GPU card i guess.

i just have first hand experience on a 3GB GT555M card.

Hmm...okay, so it must just be that the 3GB GT555 shows up as a new card, and isn't supported in Nvidia's October driver release? But that otherwise Optimus doesn't cause a problem for installing new drivers?

She was wanting to save money, and AFAIK the 3GB card wouldn't be a real-world advantage for her anyway, so...this is a second reason to steer her towards the 1.5GB card and hope the newest drivers just install without issue!

Wish Dell gave you like the configuration option or something to get rid of Optimus, and I wish Nvidia would release new drivers, even just a .1, .2 type of thing even just to add support for any new GPUs they release, even if nothing else has changed!

With the M17x I'd only be getting it with a Geforce GTX 580, either with or without Optimus (would prefer without, but that costs $400 more :( ) hopefully the drivers would work okay even on the Optimus model...that's literally the only reason I bought the G74 over the M17x to begin with last year, not that the G74 isn't a great system too.

Here is mine. I did the uninstall, reboot to safe mode, ran crap cleaner, reboot and tried to to a clean install. I still get unable to detect, or the no associated hardware. I did have the Dell drivers so I just reinstalled them. I received my AW on the 1st. Looking for a little help. Thanks

M17x has the modded A08 bios which is not only good for overclocking, but you can also disable optimus and run either just the discrete card or the igpu at will. :D this isn't possible with the m14x because it runs the video through the igpu even if you are using the gt 555m. So no igpu=no video display on the m14x. :(

I didn't realize it was possible to have a system set up to work either way! I sooooo wish Dell would just put the option in their own BIOS!

And hurray for Folding @ Home!

Hmm...my points are down yesterday, I need to check that my main folder didn't reboot for updates without my permission :D

Thanks Pete, 285.62 was the only version I could get to install properly(after trying pretty much every other version and installation method on the forums) after uninstalling factory and CCleaning. Not going to bother with the additional update as my BF3 instability has been solved.

    Thanks.

I'm sad now. Ever since I updated the drivers, Skyrim has dropped in performance significantly. I'm probably getting half the FPS I used to. I can't quite seem to figure out how to fix it.

Try the new 295.73 WHQL ones, these betas were a pain for everybody, but with the new ones you'll see quite a boost in Skyrim ;)
