I think that's false information, but the fact that the UK site still has Sandy Bridge on the site is a bit worrisome. I have to clarify when I get the chance, but the last I heard was "all regions get the automatic bump to Ivy Bridge." If that turns out not to be the case, I'd want to return and re-order, or just play it safe for now an cancel/reorder for Ivy. I'll find out more and update here.

One thing to call out: In all regions, the base Core i5 on the M14xR2 will remain Sandy Bridge until further notice.

OK. Just got the facts straight. UK is a bit different. You see there are more than one offering for each of the 14, 17 and 18. The ones with the little orange banner that says "New" are the refreshes. Those will get the same treatment as the refreshes in the US. If you order one of the other ones, those are not the refreshed models. As long as your order details show the new model of whichever platform you selected, you will get the auto upgrade. The Ivy Bridge CPU's will not show up on Dell.co.UK until 5/3. If you ordered one of the previous gen models (M14xR1, M17xR3 or M18x) expecting to get Ivy Bridge, you need to cancel and re-order if you want Ivy Bridge. If you ordered M14xR2, M17xR4 or M18xR2, you will get Ivy Bridge automatically.

    Hey Bill,

Is there any reason why RAID HDD's isn't available for the M14x, but SSD's are? That would have been perfect if I could have gotten two 750gb drives in the M14x.

The raid in the M14x for SSD is 1x 2.5" SSD and 1x mSATA SSD. No 7200RPM drives to fit into the tiny mSATA form factor! So to be clear, there is only 1 2.5" bay in the laptop, not 2.

It's just too bad that this is my r1 now minus the 650m :(. WHY did it have to be integrated with the mobo? Did they do that on purpose?

I would say that is a huge improvement.. Since Kepler is 22nn they can squeeze a lot more performance out of it.

    Exactly. Thanks for posting that.

M14x is the only Alienware without an MXM slot. I imagine a combination of cost, complexity (that's a reach), customer preferences within the 14" market, and chassis size limitations drove this. <speculation

=3=; i'm kinda disappointed. I got mine on the 6th of last month, if I'd know they were going to be getting more powerful processors and video cards.. I would have waited. :/

Thats why I stay on these forums. Luckily I came across the intel in time. Shipping mine back today for a full refund so I can upgrade. My 21 day window ends later this week. Just in time =)

On the real though, its a great upgrade but no need to be sad the M14X is an awesome machine still. Hell they offered me $160 this morning to keep it lol

    Hey Dell-Bill B

I'm a Canadian customer who ordered the R2 when it was release earlier, and I contacted customer support by e-mail today regarding the automatic upgrade to a comparable Ivy Bridge Processor (with a link to the press release mentioned earlier in this thread), and they informed me that contrary to the press release I wouldn't be receiving the upgrade, and I would have to cancel and re-order an R2 to receive the Ivy Bridge processor (Which I don't particularly want to do). Normally I wouldn't mind getting the processor I originally ordered, however Dell has now publicly stated that all M14x R2's that haven't shipped will automatically receive the new processors, while in private correspondence they are stating that customers will not receive the upgrade. The inconsistency is what is mildly frustrating. Do you have any insight? Any where we can go to get official confirmation (in writing) about whether or not our systems will ship with Ivy Bridge processors? I understand Dell is a large company and it takes time to spread information to reps, but a little consistency would be nice.... :)

    Thanks!

As long as you did not order M14xR2 with the base Core i5 CPU, you will get auto upgraded to the Ivy Bridge.

If you want me to pursue this with that rep and their site lead, PM me your email address, and we'll take it from there. I know a big 911 email went out to the sales floor in North America today. Perhaps I need to revisit with the sales messaging team and let them know Canada didn't get the word.

I ordered with the 2.4GHz i-7 option, I'd appreciate it if you'd be willing to follow up and make sure Canadians are getting the upgrade, PM's don't seem to work for me... maybe because I'm new here? I'll log out and try to get my e-mail info to you later.... Thanks for being willing to look into this and make sure us Canadians get great customer service :)

When is this going to be available in Australia?

All the other Dell websites have it (USA/UK etc)

    Hi Bill,

Thanks so much for the info. I did, in fact, order one of the 'New' ones.

    I can rest easy now.

    Thank you!

Argh I'm shaking with excitement knowing I'm going to be ordering an M14xR2 sooooon!

After reading the entirety of this thread I'm aware that ordering the R2 in the UK will be auto upgraded to IB. Yay!

Can Bill or anyone confirm if ordering one on the UK Dell site with Core i7-2760QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.5GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0) (+£200 cost) will be cheaper than waiting for them to officially list the IB processors as upgrade options? Or will it cost the same?

Waaa can't wait to join the Alienware ranks guys. xD

Should be the same cost for equivalent processors I believe.. certainly seems to be the case in the US.

However, if you haven't ordered yet, I suggest waiting until the end of the week - that's when the IVB procs should be listed on the UK site. Then you can be sure of what you're getting.

Cool thanks. I guess I should exercise a little patience then just to be sure!

If anyone's interested about the UK sales of the new M14x this is my latest conversation with a Dell rep (they are still saying you don't get an auto-upgrade):

D'oh. Noob error. Thought removing names and email would be ok. >.<
