NOTICE!!! I don't have a 900p screen like a lot of ppl. I know I've posted that I'm running the game at 720p a couple of times, but I just want to make sure you are seeing that.

(Personally, I wouldn't game at 900p with a 555m card. It's not powerful enough. When I game, I like all the settings turned all the way up. 720p lets me do that just fine.)

A 900p screen would be nice for watching movies / browsing the web I guess... But it was cheaper for the 720p and I've already got a couple external monitors if I wanted 1080p (like watching movies from my M14x through HDMI to my 50" LG).

Wait... I'm not running the game in 720p... I'm running it at 1366x768... Wow... I've never realized that's not 720p... I've just assumed because tv's r 720p and display a 1366x768 resolution that 720p was the same thing.. I'd guess you'd call my resolution 768p? Because 1920x1080 is called 1080p?.. Correct me if I'm wrong?

your right its 768p, however the resolution @1600x900 or 900p means only a little bit less fps, but its not a major number

i got my m14x today! i will be doing some testing

Depends on the game engine and which resources are utilized. Each games is different. BFBC2 is less optimized from a CPU standpoint than Bf3. Maybe the I5 will be enough. Wont be able to tell for sure until comparative tests are run with the Nvidia 555 and not the lower end 540m.

Also, turbo boost was ON during all these tests. I'm gonna take one without turbo now.
GPU reached a max of 68c (makes me wonder if these tests are not stressing enough? Because while gaming, the temp of GPU would occasionally CROSS 70, but in the tests, the max was of 68.) CPU reached 93c.

Final overclock - Max that Msi afterburner allowed -

    PhysicsTest21.01 FPS
    CombinedTest7.82 FPS

    GPU Max = 66c, CPU max = 94c
    Turbo was ON.
I guess this is the highest score I can get on this test? Since my msi afterburner doesn't allow me to increase more than this.

By the way, I'm not sure whether it was a driver restarting or something else.
But 3 times(once when doing 700/1400/900/TurboOFF)(twice during the max test) my screen turned off, just like it would be turning off when the laptop's not being used(like a fast fade effect) But my settings for this (turning off screen) are set to never in all my power plans.
Any idea why this happened? (If it had happened only during the max test, I would have understood, but it also happened during the 700 test, which makes me wonder :/ )

When you get artifacts or driver crashes or screen freezes or funny colored screens or random shutdowns or BSODs... you get the idea.

    @CpHaAiOnS I have a DV6 with i7 2630qm and HD 6770m 2 GB ( not overclocked).

If you run BF3 at 720 p at ultra and get 35 FPS, how much do you think i will get at 720p and everything on ultra? or maybe everything on high?

Hello, new to the forum, must say this thread has really helped me out in finding a good laptop. I just got my m14x 2 days ago, and I must say its a very impressive machine, I love it! So I decided to go with i5 due to limited finances and I must say compared to people on here with the i7 this PC holds its ground pretty well (not saying its as good, just saying close). Now I ran some benchmarks on 3dmark 11 and 3dmark vantage. First off, specs.

    Base Model
    Intel core i5
    555m 1.5
    4g 1333
    500g hd
    720p

Now my GPU is over clocked slightly. 700 core/1400 shader/1000 mem. Also running the 285.62 Driver.

    3dmark 11 Score: 1623
    3dmark Vantage score: 6724

Maintaining temps on the gpu around 60-65c
Maintaining temps on the cpu around 68-72c

To me these results seem rather well :)

I havent had a chance to test any new games since I dont have BF3/MW3.
As soon as I get them or one of them ill definately jump on here in let everyone know how they run and on what settings and all. :)

I figured since everyone keeps asking about the i5 i'd jump on and post my benchmarks.

Also couple questions. Is it worth getting A05 bios? Also im gonna be getting 8gigs Kingston ddr3 1866mhz. Since im running the i5 would this be a problem?

    Thanks :)

hi i also got the i5 and have about the same temperatures :)

    do you have the i5 2430m or 2410m? i got the 2430

i didn overclock my gpu yet though because im not sure how xD

btw consider that different games have very different temperatures, the most demanding are battlefield bad company 2, battlefield3, the witcher 2 and crysis 2

if you really wanna test max temps run furmark and prime95 at the same time, that would be more realistic

I have the 2430 also. I havent played demanding games yet, kinda afraid to since I've been playing Counter Strike Source and my max temp on CPU was 85c! GPU topped out around 75c (after 2 hours of play) I know these CPUs run hot, but 85c on a game thats years and years old seems a bit rediculas to me.

For over clocking I use: EVGA Precision
EVGA | Software | EVGA Precision

Im not sure if OCing is damaging my system tho =/ today I had 2 random Automatic Shutdowns.... I wasnt even gaming or anything... just surfing web =/... I see ppl on here setting there GPU to 750+ core an whatnot i havent passed 700 so I dont see how OCing could have done anything =/ maybe jus software issue?

Im gonna get the prime 95 and furmark that was I gotta better idea of whats going on. Thanks

    Update
Playing BFBC2 now. With the i5 and 1.5g video OCd getting 30-50 frames all settings on high. Highest resolution aswell.
555m stays around 73c never goes higher then that
CPU 85-90c highest i hit was 91c. Thats also with a Targus cooling pad... Hot running CPU for sure. Good running PC tho :)

posted a respectable 1823 in 3d marks today. Sitting at 770/1106. I never reach beyond 75 C while gaming for hours. Just curious how much I am taking off the life cycle of mr. 555m?

    OC'D my gt555m to 619, 1238, 915. (should i go more or less?)

I tried this in order to get rid of the screen tearing i have been seeing on bf3 on medium and high settings. Game runs fine but seems to be choppy for some reason. When grenades go off even on medium it slows down a bit. Not sure why

    Hi all,

I just made a test on my alienware.

    Drivers 296.10:

    Stock: P1443
    Overclocked: P1849
(775MHz core clock, 1550MHz shader clock, 1000Mhz memory clock)

    Drivers 301.42:

    Stock: P1451
    Overclocked: P1863
(775MHz core clock, 1550MHz shader clock, 1000Mhz memory clock)

    Overclocked: P1960
(825MHz core clock, 1650MHz shader clock, 1000Mhz memory clock)

I'm not sure if I can play game more than 30-60 minutes on 825 MHz, but tests with 3dMark11 passed with 71C temperature and no hangs or artifacts. 775 MHz is perfect stable for me (maximum +1C or +2C on GPU).

    Regards.

The new 304.79 Beta Driver is awesome! It fixed some bugs with some benchmarking suites and now the Nvidia control panel reports the correct 745MHz core speed with 4000MHz mem speed. 3DMark11 also increased from P2296 to P2324 (graphics score from 2062 to 2092, 1.5% increase).

    I also added temps above.

Very nice thread indeed. Your monster is performnng great. I would love to see a 3dmark vantage benchmark to see the difference between my modded r2 with the standard 3610qm cpu to your high end cpu.

Thanks for the benchmark! Your CPU performs killerstyle but your GPU is very low even when you OC it.

Look at my benchmark i have the same card you got:

I'd be curious as to what could be causing that. What driver are you using on yours?

I'm using the latest Beta driver on Windows 7 Ult 64bit. I'm wondering if a couple background applications may have been slowing it down as well. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Well my experience is that there are totally different GT650m´s around. I saw extreme different scores for 1 and the same system speccs. Mine is luckily the best ive seen so far. I can also OC very high and run absolutely stable.

Im also using the latest beta verde drivers 304.79.

I'll have to dig a little more when I have time next week. I'd imagine due to better binning, you could overclock more with a higher quality chip. At stock frequencies thought it should perform very similar to other 650m's. That's why the do the bin test in the first place.

I will mess around with it and try the new A03 firmware next week as well. I will also close a few background programs to see how else the card is affected. Thanks for the tips.

Yes that helps maybe too. Im currently running 56 background processes. I disabled 90% of everything that will never be needed at startup.

Ive also disabled the page file, superfetch and all the other ssd optimization stuff.

The GPU and CPU are repasted with good TIM too and ive activated advanced energy options for the CPU (dunno if the GPU is affected by this).

    Hope that helps.

Is it OK to bump this thread?
    I've run 3DMark 11 and Cinebench R11.5 on my M14x.

    Specifications here:

Are these scores in line with everyone else? That the i7-3720QM is approximately half as fast as my 3930K is fairly good, I'd say, but the temperatures I'm recording on the cores is absurd. Does it need a repaste?

Did you have background programs active, was anything overclocked, were you using a i7-3820QM, etc.?
