The reason for the temps not showing in Hardware monitor pro is that you have to run something and run the CPUID to show you the working 555m, otherwise it stays on internal GPU. Tru to run MSI afterburner, minimize it with no changes done and run CPUID. Other than that just go to Nvidia Control Panel and under 3d options change to always use discrete video card. I have Optimus on my Dell aswell)

Not quite, everyting about the power of a CPU changes according to what it is being used for at the time.

i7 needs 45 tdp to run

15 needs 35 tdp to run

    i7 has 4/8 cores 6mb cache

    i5 has 2/4 cores 3mb cache

cpu power and battery power are diffrent things but the i5 will have more than half the power of a i7 according to what is running at the time.

    check these out: :D

Depends of many things, if you are lucky you can overclock a lot, if you are not you can't. It's different for every M14x.

    Hello everyone =]

I just received my AW m14x this morning and was eager to get some benchmarks on it. I have been watching this forum since even before I ordered my laptop so I had an idea on the limits of this already, so thank you!

With the graphics stock running 3D Mark 11 on performance mode (basic version), i received a score of P1236. I used MSI afterburner and I now have the speeds at 650/1300/1000, and I received P1444. Not bad for the little bit of OC'ing I did.

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I'm quite content with this score, I realize I could push this another 100 Mhz or so and I might atleast try it to see what I get, but for now I think I will keep this setting. I have not touched the CPU or memory, and don't plan on it since they are already fast and would rather not increase temps more then I have to.

    Specs:

    AW M14x: Intel Core i7 2630 QM, 3 GB Nvidia 555 GT, 14 in screen/900p, 6 GB DDR3, 500 GB 7200 HDD, Intel Advanced-N Wireless 6205, X-Fi Enabled Sound

Another update, I ran 3DMark Vantage Performance (full program version) and received P7054.

Same speeds as my mark 11 test, 650/1300/1000.

Nice one, congrats. Did you try to OC a lttle higher i think you can achieve 6k in Vantage for GPU? What drivers did you use?

Sorry for late response, I've been busy lately and haven't rechecked the forums in awhile. Red Line, my driver version is 267.21. I haven't tried pushing it any further yet but I will once I get a hold of crysis 2 or metro 2033 to actually put some stress on the card for real time performance.

Could anyone who has Metro 2033 please run the built in benchmark at:

    1366x768
    DX10
    Medium Settings
    AAA
    No advanced Physics

I would just like to see how much of a boost I would see over my overclocked M11x (I get 25FPS at these settings).

I want to replace my M11x and don't know whether a M14x is "enough" or whether I want a proper desktop replacement.

Ok, so I ram 3DMark06 with stock GPU clocks and overclocked, seems to me inline with everyone's benchmarks so far... BUT.. Anyone else have temps this high when benching??

LANCER91 I belive that you have the I5 cpu. If you could run some benchmarks stock that would be appriciated.

I would like to see how they compare to the I7 stock cpu.

The 2720QM and higher support faster memory speeds. The sticks I have are plug-n-play, but you can also set the speed in the BIOS under Advanced / Performance Options Menu / Memory Overclocking. You can manually set the timings and enable XMP profiles.

For browsing and basic tasks, you won't notice a difference. You would notice when gaming on the integrated graphics though. I've actually increased my bCLK via BIOS to 102.5, the RAM is now running at about 1900.

The 1866 sticks are plug and play. They should automatically detect at 1866, 11-11-11-32 timings. The sticks you bought will work fine in the M14x, but you will need to enable XMP, profile 2, in the BIOS. They run at CAS 9. Excellent choice ;)

Something else to look at is the same ram running at 1600 (And costs like $40 less) has tighter timings at 9-9-9-24 (I think) so if you go with 1600 ram with tighter timings or faster ram with looser timings your benefit between the two is going to be minimal because of that.

I'm having serious problems running 3dmark benchmarking, and all signs point to the Nvidia card not kicking in.

First, 3dmark11 won't run with an error that DX11 hardware isn't detected. And 3dmark Vantage is producing a benchmark of around P2600.

I tried whitelisting both, with no luck. I even tried the global whitelist, which again didn't fix the problem. How is everyone running 3dmark benchmarks? Or do I have a problem with my m14x?

I'm running Nvidia 280.26 drivers. MSI Afterburner never reports more than 53% GPU usage, though it does say the Nvidia card is running at times during games (e.g. Starcraft II). The Nvidia taskbar icon never indicates any GPU activity, though.

EDIT: reverting to the stock Dell Nvidia drivers fixed the problem. Hmmm...

Nice system, scores seem on target. Overclock at all yet?

I had similar problems with the 280 series drivers. Have you tried the 275.50? Worked well for me at least.

    Hey all,

I was doing some research on 3Dmark so I downloaded the program to it myself. Just wanted to run a few questions by the forum and see what everyone had to say.

    1. What's the purpose of the score when your done running the program?

    2. The First score/benchmark was before I overclocked my GPU. These are the standard settings for my GT555m 1.5gb, but how is it different from the second score? I know it's a higher number, but what does it actually mean.
    I overclocked to 750 core/1500 shaders/1080 memory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi,

Would you m14x owners with an i5 2410m would be so generous to run benchmarks and post the corresponding temperatures for them?

A furmark benchmark with and without prime 95 would also be appreciated!

This could help alot of people on deciding for the i5. In the U.S. its maybe not worth getting but in Germany or other countries in europe its about 200 euro (not dollar!!) cheaper. Now if it also runs cooler than the i7 this would be awesome.

You always have the option to exchange the cpu later on.

So please post benchmarks doesnt matter which ones but please remember:

DO POST THE TEMPERATURES! Under load and idle and say which game..

Many say the CPU runs cool during games but often they dont use the CPU at full load like battlefield bad company 2 or BF3 Beta

    Thanks in advance!

Well I wrote about, if you round 160 up you get 200 ^^

Regardless, its a high price to pay for such a hot running CPU..

Now the question is, downclock i7 or run i5 with turbo boost..

    So please post benchmarks!

Well I can tell you that having turbo boost will provide higher temps than a downclocked i7.

If performance isn't too much of an issue, the i5 is fine. But with Turbo Boost, the same heating issues apply. The only difference being that i7's are more powerful.

    Using Core Temp I get max=80c with an i5 2410m 2.3ghz, 2.9ghz TB
    That's also with my OC'd 555m 1.5gb @770/1540/1080 max=68c (msi afterburner)

That's playing Crysis for 3 hours. (Note: I DO NOT have a cooling pad, but I do have two sets (4) of Gigaware Flip-Up Feet under the laptop which brings the laptop 1/4 of an inch off the desk)

I honestly don't feel like running furmark or prime 95.. I'm just here to tell you the i5 DEF runs cooler. My m14x originally had an i3 2310m, and I debated between an i5 and an i7. Performance/price/cooling wise, I'm ABSOLUTELY :D with the i5!!! It's performance is gonna be close to an i7 in gaming because the gpu is the limiting factor on the M14x, not the cpu, and the price for me was $85 bucks on eb@y for the i5, and cooling (I knew it'd be cooler than an i7, I just didn't know how much). CPU @80c and GPU OC'd to the max at @68c!!!

In my opinion it's a no brainer... i5 is the way to go.

Now... If you were talking about another laptop with a better gpu, idk... but for the M14x which already has a poor cooling design IMO, the i5 is the way to go.

    M14x:
    i5 2410m
    555m 1.5gb @770/1540/1080
    250gb WD BLK 7200rpm
    8gb 1333 G.Skill ram
    WLED HD screen (720p)

(Just in case you were wondering... I'm playing BF3 right now with all the settings on ultra getting ~30 fps at 720p)

    i totally agree cphaions!

my m14x is arriving tomorrow but with a i5 2430m!

I think the i5 is an absolutely good match to the 555 and it keeps moderate temperatures

i cant wait to get mine!

And while the "so called" experts are telling you to go with the I5, please feel free to run some benchmarks in BF3 comparing the I5 to the I7. I think you might see a slight performance difference.. <wink wink>

Okay, let's hear it then. Turn everything up in settings and run BF3 with an i7 at 720p. Also, make sure you OC the gpu to 770/1540/1080 to make our gpu's the same. Post your fps and I'll go run it right now and post what I get.

(And really, I don't mind if I'm wrong.. I know my M14x isn't the fastest thing on the planet... I also know an i7 would be faster. I just didn't wanna pay the money, and didn't want the heat it gave. I honestly don't think there's much of a difference though... let's see) :)

the slight perfomance difference doesnt justify those temperatures at all

i would rather have a little bit less perfomance than my notebook running hot!

Okay, so I have all the settings turned all the way up, except for Motion Blur (I don't like motion blur, lol)

Doesn't drop below 30 fps. Stays around 33-35, with occasional high spikes.

    i5 2410m 2.3ghz, 2.9ghz TB Max temp=79c
    555m 1.5gb @770/1540/1080 Max temp=67c
@720p, everything turned max except motion blur is off.
