Only with stock clocks, when overclocking it drops to 0.87, only GPU Z and Inspector report 0.92

With Nvidia Verde 196.10 WHQL everything is normal.

    I meant 296.10

Could you do a few runs using the newer 301.24 driver just so I can see that it is genuinely going to 0.92v on stock.

It stays in 0.92 then after 30 sec. it drops to 0.87 when using firefox it stays in 0.92 all the time. Nvidia settings Max performance.

Hmmm very strange. I guess the newer drivers weren't meant for the 580m's. I'm on the 0.92v one so I never saw the change. Thanks for letting us know.

Yes. I have just had a new card installed so I wanted to test it all out at stock and it does briefly show 0.92V.

Update, the stock bios drops to .80 when in P1 (overclocking), I'm thinking the modded BIOS also matches the P state voltages as well as the clock speed so you see 0.87?

if both 3d power profiles are not set to .92v and same speeds you can get throttling. if one is .92v and other is .87v it would do that and if both are flashed to .92v then what if inspector its not setting 92v just the same on one profile out of the two 3d clock power profiles in the vbios/card. or maybe the new beta is effecting overclocking using that software...? just some thoughts.

I think you're right about the driver mis-identifying the card.

Looks like this might be part of Nvidia's new 'burst mode' technology and starting using 'up to' speeds in the numbers game on new 6x series cards, but the voltage part is kicking in so prob a bug?

I think because the driver is ready for GPU boost, in older gen cards, it will attempt to boost which causes the volts to go up when fully running. I guess you're right.

no way on the 900mhz core for gaming purposes...it will crash and or driver itself will cause a crash in most gaming scenarios... if your top dog and freeze those suckers you might bench 900core on 3dmark11 by miracle but in real games esp Metro,Crysis,Witcher,Skyrim and more you will need to be much lower try atleast 820mhz core and down... mine are way too hot for 820core to work on .92v but atleast you'll have a starting point on where to game from or less
Widezu you run yours 24/7 .92v gaming gpu gaming clocks what speeds? or for gaming and everyday r u on .87v?

In the sensors tab of GPUz make sure you check Log in the background and run an intensive game like BF3 or Crysis 2. Tab out and screenshot that page :)

lol exactly... seems Widezus lucky i can't run My Sli 580's at 800core without black screen on strong games... but i use the most settings I can... I noticed white artifacts stock volts at 675 core just earlier, it went away with the 92v vbios but no way can mine do hardcore gaming at Widezus levels... nice temps Widezu even vsync on mine can get into the 70s easy on 92v... its not the paste job i was very thorough....

we didn't pay all this money to keep one thing stock hehe... I know I didn't

Test it out. If you can let the graphics card reach around 70C without any change in clock speeds then you don't need the fix :)

I wonder if this is going worldwide or only in the US?

So let me get this correctly, they shipped m17x r3 with bad heatsinks for the 580m and now they are trying to replace them with new better heatsinks?

    Didn't follow 580m issues since i went with 6970m

I don't think so. They are offering this as more of quality control as factory assembled stuff was really bad. Dell want to make sure that everyone's heatsink and pads are fitted nicely that's all but they have to officially document it and they are calling it a heatsink replacement. I think it's great on their part :)

I don't buy that, they just never ship something without testing that's just not how it works in big companies, specially for something that is easily noticeable like throtting.

unless it was a nvidia fault not dell like how the older 8000 series caused a lot of troubles to apple/hp/etc in that case Dell would be forced to ship nvidia option for those who want it and in case of troubles nvidia would handle/pay for all damages

I did say i didn't because i went with 6970m, whatever is the cause there is no way dell have missed it, they shipped it knowing the issue so all the "omg they are nice free replacement" only courage companies to be not clear with their buyers and misguide them

    It's alright I know. I didn't mean any offence I was just messing :)

No Dell were unaware that there was at first throttling @ around 65C for some cards that drew more power than the rest especially those who overvolted, which the guide on the OP fixes.

The Dell system bios actively throttles any nvidia card @78C. A lot of people can keep their temp under control and hit this limit but some still do. After a few people opened up their systems, they saw that the factor paste and pad job was awful. Our good friend Dell-Bill helped out with getting thing in motion so Dell could come up with a fix. Them offering heatsink replacements is a good thing as when technicians arrive, customers can make sure that the heatsink is pasted and padded nicely. This is just quality control albeit a bit late but users can still benefit.

I have followed this thread for some time now, having the same issues as everyone else, but my GPU temps have been steadily increasing to the point of complete system lock-up the last week or so, I had not received the email that uGinn posted so I called tech-supp and they are dispatching with a heat sink so if you do not receive an email and want the replacement just call dell.

Dell just changed the heatsink for me. It seems now when I reach 60 degree celcius , my game drop it's frames on 90++ to around 15+ for around 5 seconds.

This occurs when the fan started blowing loudly. Whenever my gpu fan blows loudly for around 2-3 seconds , my fps just dropped. Is it my gpu problem now or the heatsink problem? Should I contact dell for further assistance?

Sounds like you are hitting the power throttle. This can happen at any temp. Have you tried the modded VBIOS to match the P0/P1 clocks? If it is this problem then the VBIOS fix will cure it. You can also use NvidiaInspector to set your P1 to match P0 if you are not comfortable with flashing.

You can use msiafterburner to display your clock speed and temp in-game. If your machine is stock you will see the clock drop from 620 to 4xx (forgot what the stock P1 is!)

I don't recomend the overvolt... Just use the matched profile P0 and P0 on stock .87v since you had thermal issues... I had similar heat issues and for gaming Revelator posts make the most sence to me... Good temps and a decent range in performance... Pushing high clocks with .92v draws much more than 100watts but on the .87v with a fair overclock it still isn't going to be drawing much over 100watts. So for testing leave stock volts and clocks but make P1 state use .87v at 620core etc... Should be a download in the OP

Guys is this normal? I'm playing mw3 on 1280x720 resolution and at the lowest graphics option. Am still having unstable fps..the gpu usage used to be around 99% whenever I play any games a few months

ago. Now it only stays around 10-30% usage of the gpu. I have done the vbios fix already. This is really making frustrated.
