I dont see much of speed improvement. Though I must admit that the bottleneck are the RAID 0 HDDs.

Hynix is part of the Hyundai Group and it was formerly known as Hyundai Electronics. They are indeed good stuff as DR says. I had a 8Gb @1333 kit in my M17x for a long time.

haha I did not mean that hynix was shady. I meant that I got my new precision and it came with completely wierd brand never heard of before. Hynix is a large brand. Hyundai electronics is the same family groups as the guys who make the cars.

So just arrived home and installed 16Gb corsair kit. Windows does reconize it but it show only 6.86Gb usable... any hint on this? did a power drain.

    See attached picture.

Edit: ram is there, only it shows as "hardware reserved" what the heck?!

does anyone know why alienware by default says only 8gb max when clearly 16gb works?

so you mean to say that they only were making 4gb sticks at the time of the release of this system? for example: alienware could have stated when they were selling the computer that the r2 can support 16gb @ 2x 8 if and when they make ram sticks @ that capacity? i know how my response sounds but im trying to understand why alienware couldnt clarify @ initial sale that the system can only be sold with 8gb max due to hardware limitations but the computer has the potential to read more... i mean i understand that maybe they couldnt know what it can do without having 8gb sticks to test it with but what i understood about "the m17x r2 supports up to 8gb ram max" was that they maybe programmed the system to read UP TO 8gb as if the system had that limitation. i hope you can understand my confusion and help me understand it accordingly, i know my statement is confusing lol.

Nice! You'll notice in the bios it will say 0mb RAM. Don't worry, it's because at the time the M17x R2 was developed, there was no line in the bios to address 8GB RAM sticks as they were not yet available at the time ;)

Off topic, but when ram arrives tomorrow going to do a strip down and clean, also repaste CPU as temps are uneven, Whats your prefered choice of paste application? i normally go for spreading out with a credit card, but may go for a "blob and press" this time...... just cant seem to get even temps?

    Advice

the only thing i don't like about the m17x is that the express card slot is above the disk drive it gets in the way all the time. i'd rather have the express slot on the left side.

Intel also says the Sandy Bridge CPU's don't support 1600Mhz memory unles you have an i7 or higher...That's not the case.

Yeah I agree with the express card slot as well. I have to be careful that my USB 3.0 cables are out of the way prior to ejecting a DVD. On the plus side, I find myself using the DVD drive less often then I used to, so hasn't been too much of an inconvenience.

Clarksfield i7 quad core CPU's only support 1333 max, awhile Arrandale i3/i5/dual core i7's only support 1066 max.

Sandy Bridge i7 quad cores support 1600 natively, while the dual core SB CPU's support 1333.

AFAIK you need a quad core Clarksfield i7 to get the 16 GB RAM support, unless someone can confirm an Arrandale CPU does 16 GB RAM. In my R2, it slows my POST down as it does a quick memory test during POST, and in my BIOS it shows 0 MB in both DIMMs but Windows says 16 GB.

1600MHz will be downclocked to 1333MHz so the extra cost is worthless. You won't find confirmation.

You can buy the 1600 RAM but it will just run 1333. Newer laptops can make use of the faster RAM speed.

Great Stuff here! Can't wait to try this out.

By the way, is there any reported brand that doesn't work with the M17x R2? Or would basically any brand work?

    Thanks :D

Just tried this myself with my R2. Computer will boot fine, once and run fine. Sleep doesn't seem to work at all, for Win7 or Ubuntu, and I've yet to try hibernate (don't have that much free space on the HDD :D ). Anyone else had sleep issues with bios A10?

Actually, I think I have it squared away now. Got some proper corsair ram and suspend works fine from both OSes. :)

Hey.. I just bought the new Corsair (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10). Every time i try to boot up, the system shutdown. When trying to make a clean install win7 the same thing happens.. I am running with a m17x R2. 620m CPU and a ATI 5870HD. Anyone who knows about this issue, and even hou to fix it? Thanks it would be great to get this working.. :D

I am tryng to do a memtest, but the system shutdown after a few seconds.. ./

I have found out what the issue was. My Processor only supports up to DDR 1066, not DDR 1333 or DDR 1600

    Just bought corsair 16gb kit.

    Corsair CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL10 Enthusiast Notebook Memory Kit

Worked ok for 1 day, then i had to chcnge back to kingston 8gb kit because i would get caps lock flashing during post + no post. And when i finally managed to get into bios, it would show me:

    MemoryBank 0 - 0MB ram,
    MemoryBank 1 - 0MB ram,
    Total memory - 0MB

weird because memory modules were working ok for 1 day, and now this crap....

I tried memtest and it failed during the test. When i booted with the two corsair 8gb cards using memtest, memtest recognized them and started the test, but only for like 5-10 seconds and then it chrashes. Only to boot up to the windows logo and then freez.
    Thank you for helping me...

No, with the Old ram everything works great, i think one ram card is from hyinx or something 4gb and the other one is from samsung 2gb. Should i try my corsair cards in an other laptop just to make shure they're not broken?

No it sounds like one or both sticks are bad. You can test them individually to easily diagnose which one is bad, or if both are.

I ran both cards with memtest individually and same thing happens, it crashes and tries to boot but freezes when it gets to the windows logo.
Are you sure my m17x r2 is capable to handle 16gb of ram? I mean what's the odds that both cards are bad?
