I'd certainly like to see a 485M but my big problem is the cost of it. It's much, much more expensive than the 6970M but only 10% faster at best. It'd be an expensive upgrade if Dell added it...the better solution IMO would be to offer some kind of 3D with the ATi cards.

now i know why dell reps on chat is the worse idea ever, just asked about GTX560m, they do not have a clue, and all i did after is asked for a quote, im starting to think that the 560m and/or 485m won't be released until September.

The only AMD 3d solution is the hp envy 17. I dont know how they got the 6850/5850 to work in 3d. Nvidia's option is just so much simpler though...

People have already tried running the 6970m in the 120hz screen system, and it wouldn't start. Perhaps if you look into how hp envy 17 3d does it, you might have some success.

They just made it look like cyberpower (or one of those clevo resellers) with mobility/gaming performance/etc. filled out.

No change to m17x or m18x. And they lied, the m17x (if you click on customize, the very first link for the base 1499 has a description of anodized aluminum, which we all know is false.)

Well alot of dates like June 21st for example are rumored dates, considering that is only 3 days away. I think we may see an update. Plus one of the sales trying to push the 460m is ending the 19th so this can be the most pointless site update or one that will turn into something we like.....Unless Alienware is going Clevo on us?!

I hope they support for the GTX 485 but by the time they released the GTX 485 Clevo will already have the GTX 580 or 590. Be nice if you can get support for this on the M17X R2 also.

Which one is ending 19th ?.. only see summer sales ending in 20th and they seem unrelated to Alienware.

Did you go to the Dell ideastorm and promote (vote up) the post?

If not plz do. If you did then thank you!

Hopefully something will happen in a positive direction. The more and more I think of it; Its frustrating that we cant have a top card and 3D at the same time. It makes no sense... Plus most other brands that do carry the top nvidia mobile cards have 3D available.. and those companies dont sell as many as Dellienware.

Anyways again I encourage anyone who is actually serious about wanting a better nVidia option. Heck even if you dont want a better nvidia but just would like 3D coupled with the highest available video card, even if it was ATI. We all know it seems more likely to be nVidia if / when it happens.

If we dont promote the thread on the Dell ideastorm they cannot properly gauge who rly cares about this.. the more people the better chance!

Thx again to all who have promoted.

All I see is they end in "Special Offer - Expires: Sunday, January 01, 2012" for M17x offers and the summer sales end in 20th.

Eurocom have 560M cheaper than the 460M , looks like Dell is behind everyone else on this one. Hopefully 580M upgrade would drop in price relative to the 485M as it did for 460M/560M

This part doesn't make any sense.
If the 580m performs better than the 485m it cannot be cheaper.
And phase the 485m out because it's expensive? Who fixes the price? If nvidia want it to be more competitive with 6970m price wise then they can just lower its price, it's not like the price is a given, they fix it themselves ;)

I have no idea what you are saying...

Anyways, the 580m is supposed to be an estimated ~10% over the 485m, so that it can compete and maybe even beat the AMD 6990m. The 480m is an example of a gpu that nvidia tried to phase out of production after reports of its crazy overheating etc. The 580m might very well be the same price as the 485m, but I doubt it. The only reason the 560m is the same price as the 460m, is that the 460m has been out a while and the 560m is the successor.

Still probably will be alot easier to get the 485m next year, when every one is trying to dump off the 485m and get 580m instead...expect a drop in price for it.

The only thing this can mean is that its replacement is right around the corner. Good. Let's hope AW will push for 6990m and 580m in m17x hard enough.

What I fail to understand is why would someone want to bother with an R3 w/485M in the first place? IMO the R3 is old news, oncce the M18x landed. Having owned and returned a maxed out R3, coming from a R2 and having a maxed out M18x in my home and another one on the way...I fail to generate as much excitement as the OP. Before I got 6 BSOD's on my R3 I had already made up my mind to return it based on build quality or lack of build quality. Yes one might argue weight, size & cuda blah blah blah.........

I for one, would rather go 6970M CF over a single 485M. If you are buying/bought(R3) from the outlet, then I understand.
This is my opinion. If you don't agree just get up, walk away from your R3 and take a break and then come back. I won't loose any sleep over this and neither should you. :) We are all on the same team.

It doesn't really matter if it's a m17x or a m18x. The point is to get a 3D ready system using the most powerful card there is. It seems 580m could deliver just that. You want ATI, you are okay with 6790m, you don't care about 3D, good for you, your choice. I want Nvidia, and I want it with class.

I may consider going SLI (this would mean choosing a m18x), however I am a bit sceptic about that, and I bet that 580m will rather be very expensive, yet I am pretty sure that even a single 580m will do, especially if the card is really going to be more powerful than 485m. With a single GPU m17x seems just fine. In the end it's smaller and thinner than m18x. Well, m18x could do as well. The difference in price between the two (if they have the very same hardware) is very small (at least around my parts).

The point is AW should give us options so everybody can get what they want, especially as AW is much more expensive than the competition (asus and SN/Clevo around these parts). This is not Asus for which you pay a balanced price for a balanced notebook. We should be able to configure an AW laptop, be it a m18x or a m17x, in any way we want.

yup kinda like how a fat kid loves cake. I suspect that this thread will die out because it fails to gather any real number of posts just like the ideastorm thread. This low number of posts isn't going to change Dell's marketing plans. They have a marketing team that employs analyst that perform market research to find the balance between what most consumers want and at the same time remaining profitable.

    It's true that I own/owned a UN55D7000(living room), UN55D8000(bedroom), UN55C7000(Recently Returned), UN55C9000(Recently Sold) so I'm no stranger to 240 3D LED Smart TV. I find that 3D is awesome on a 55"(54.6) screen+. But on a small 17" 120hz screen the effect seems more like a gimmick than a feature.

I've read many posts here from actual 3D R3 owners that share the same opinion. From the posts that I read, most R3 3D owners chose to go 3D just for the 120hz screen.

Like some previous posts have said....I think it would be best to allow the 120hz screen to work with the 6970M and be available to configure to order. AMD cards are also capable of 3D. This move would allow Dell to apease this very small niche market at the same time expanding the options available.

You are 100% missing the point...

For one there is a common BSOD that is caused by the intel gfx driver for the r3 once I installed that no more BSOD. I think thats just the user / tech support failing to see that it could be driver related, you assumed it was hardware and were quick to ask for a replcement. Using error codes you could see that on the bsod.. There is no actual defect out there like there was on the m15x.

The main reason we are doing this is 3D, you cant get 3D in the models you got. Not every one wants a bulky heavy sli setup.. and me personally I do not want sli that is where the m17x comes in. Its like the replace for the m15x just bigger. The M18X didnt replace the m17x it moved it to a different point in the line, m17x now serves a different need. So our point is put a decent video card in the model with 3D. Other companies just offer most common cards out there thats all we are pushing for.
    My system has been great.

Regardless I fail to see how your post was helpful to this topic. Please stay on topic, we dont need this thread to turn in to a flaming situation, it has stayed on topic the whole time so far.

    THX

I figured you'd push the whole difference in wait/size...blah blah blah.... I think your missing my point. I wasn't focusing on the BSOD's. The reason I mentioned it was because in the past I tried to troubleshoot it here in the forums. Before I started the SP1 install that triggered the frequnt BSOD's I decide I was going to return it, based on the lack of quality materials used in manufacturing.

I've seen you rave up & down about how powerful the 6970M is. Wouldn't you agree that it would make sense for Dell to offer the 6970M with 120hz screen as a configure to order option?
I'm sure all it would take is a re-writing of the BIOS. This move would be more cost effective and come into fruition, certainly before Dell approves the purchase of an order of 485M's and change their marketing plans/website all for a handfull of 71(at current) NBR members.

The 6970 vs 120Hz screen is making it hard for me to choose. 3D as an extra is nice.

I was hoping the 560M will close the gab between 460M and 6970M even if it was 15% for the current time until the 580M.

485M is outrageously expensive imo you probably can buy M18x SLI (+200$ SLI upgrade) and an external 3D screen (Alienware OptX AW2310 +450$) for less than the price of one 485M (900$).
Yea i know you can't hug that screen around but I don't think wearing 3D glasses in the public is a great idea either.

Hopefully the 580 will be reasonably priced ... any news on the 560M ? 21 June can't see anything :( .

EXACTLY This was one of the points I was trying to make. The M17x R3 is properly equipped for what it is. It is not meant to be an all out balls to the wall M18x. It is meant to be an affordable Alienware alternative in a 17" screen form factor. The cost of the 485M would push the R3 in the wrong direction. Dell already has the 6970M + 3D 120hz screens in stock. It would make more sense to go that route. Although I could see them going with a 560M since it is readily available to other OEM's/ODM's.

First off theres loads more people that would buy nvidia over ati all day long just cuz its nvidia.. one of the reasons it sells so well in this config is because nvidia is not a option for high end.. Other companies that make way less money then Dellienware sell both the 6970m and 485M 3D as an option. They still make money... So I do think there is a chance Dell could offer something different.

Also about the 3D offerings from ATI I am sure that is also partly a decision ATI has made as well. This arguement was never rly just about nVidia.

Either way, theres loads of people that want 3D and have the maxed out video card.. either ATI or nvidia. The only reason nvidia is in the topic is the fact that nvidia is doing the 3D in the available laptops.

So the point of the thread since it doesnt take much effort was to at least attempt to see what we can do. Certainly so far we have voiced the opinion further and to more people in the past couple weeks compared to the last 6 months.

If it doesnt happen... it doesnt happen... At least we tried.

This thread was not made to argue the opinions what AW/Dell did wrong, which systems are better then others etc etc etc. It was simply to find people that also were interested in a OPTION of a high end video card on a 3D config. thats it. :)

Ok now lets go back to the topic at hand :)

Clearly it is easier for Dell/AW to re-write the bios to allow the R3 to be configured with the 6970M & 120hz 3D screen. Why didn't you request this as a contengency? Most companies like options. I also noticed that most of the post don't explain why the 485M is neccessary over the other available options. :)

The 3D driver, Glasses, Driver for the receiver are all nvidia. So how would that even work if ATI doesnt write a driver for those hardware parts?

Technically they could rewrite the vbios and or drivers to allow the use of 3D with 485m cards that we get else where, but thats it. Unless ATI takes some action and offers their own 3D hardward (Glasses, receiver, etc). How could you use 3D if ATI drivers dont support it with the available hardware?

On to your next point ...

The 485M was mentioned as its the only high end nvidia right now.. 3D is done by nvidia there for thats why it was mentioned. Then talk of 580M has been brought up so we mentioned that too. Nothing else was mentioned because we already have a midrange card... we wouldnt want anything lower so we mentioned our two only options.

Either way at this point its clear you are just trying to argue to argue.. whats the point of doing that? Your previous comments dont even make sense since it is impossible to do your suggestions.

Please stop you are throwing the whole point of this off.

the 485m is necessary because if AMD did 3D (i dont think they do) AW would offer it. But the 485m is better than the AMD card anyway. I would pick Nvidia over AMD any day. Thus in my non 3d laptop i got the weaker 460m. Honestly even if dell supported 485m in the next A05 bios it would be good enough for me, considering that picking up the 485m is easy if you have the $$. It is not the fact of having options, its the point of also using the best of the best out there, in the gaming world there is no room for second place

The R3 is not marketed as having the best of the best out there. That title belongs to the M18x, as far as Alienware/Dell is concerned.
That's why the M18x's slogan is " The Most Powerful 18” Gaming Laptop in the Universe"

The M17x R3's slogan is "Now featuring the All New 2nd Generation Intel Core Processors" Does that sound like the best of the best? You can't even configure the R3 with the 2920xm.

After some time goes by you guys will probably get the choice of a 560M because of the advancement of technology.

Again, not everyone is after getting the largest most powerful laptop on the planet. LOL.
It has the potential of being the best 17" system... The best single GPU system.. etc etc
I personally have no complex where I feel the need to make sure I have the biggest thing on the block.

A M17X with a 6970 and even a 460M is a decent computer to play games on. What have we become spoiled??? It seems you are fanboying the M18x for no reason, one is even knocking it.
I personally think all Alienwares are good, but theres 4 of them lol. Its not a one model gaming line.. They are all nice gaming systems.

But to go and throw a fanboyism jab right back.. Anand Tech just gave the M17X the edtiors choice award for the R3 over the M18X.
    :p

Just kidding not a fanboy rly.

It's not that I'm a fanboy towards the M18x. I just understand how they are marketed. Currently the M18x suits me. Okay.

This thread has gotten way more attention than it deserves.
    Good luck. :D

As much as I respect everybody here, please, let's stick to the OP and respect his demand.
If you have better ideas you're free to start a thread about it.
Sorry but it seems we developed some kind of constitution here so that everybody should go in the same direction, let's respect eachother's choices!

    Cheers

Thank you. It does seem like we were losing focus.

Anyone else that agrees with trying to get a better nvidia card, please promote on Dell IdeaStorm.
