Absolutely. I would happily take any of those options (preferrably the 580m)
If any of you haven't chimed in on ideastorm yet, then please do! We really need to show dell that this matters to us.
-
-
Dell does realize that the small amount of people from NBR is fraction of interested people. This can demonstrate things. -
Anyone seen anything out in the wild? A couple of dates have passed.
-
Dell called me today to ask me how do I like my 4 weeks old m17x. I told them what I think about the graphics card offering in 3D model line. It sucks.
The guy tried to sell me additional warranty to add to the 1 year I got with the purchase so I can protect my investment in many years to come. So I told him, why would I want additional warranty if I may not keep this system for more then a year anyway. I told him I will wait to see if they start offering 485m or 580m because that would be the reason I would want to keep this system for longer then 1 year.
Ohh well, maybe some of this will sink into their head. -
just got my m17x today and it is beyond beautiful and enjoying every second of is, still would prefer a better GPU like the 485m or 580m asap
-
-
-
485M is currently $750 not $900. Sager/eurocoms prices are gouged
If or when the newer card for nvidia comes it will be cheaper from Dell, especially because the reps can be negotiated. -
I just have the money for the M18x invested so the difference in the cost of the cards is pretty much already paid for in returns. I'm taking advantage of the delay in the 580M
-
Will it support the 3d screen though? -
sorry didn't wanna go off topic, but the 580m was just announced.

Yes, 580m is there. Mystery solved.
-
Looks like we go our problem solved. Now the only issue is convincing dell to let me return...

Unfortunately the 580M is not supported on 3D systems.

I configured it this morning when it came out by auto selecting the 1799$ 3d deal, and it had the 580m as an option.
Glad to see alienware back on top. -

Just give it time and I bet it will be available with the 120Hz panel
-
Well congrats! Not sure if we did anything but still was nice to voice our opinion. Now with that said since its not with the 120Hz panel we need to get a test goin with a Dell card. ;p also I still will persue the Ideastorm thread. We were requesting a high end 3D card not just a high end nvidia to be added to the line. Lacking 3D defeats this purpose.
So please feel free to still promote and add comments on the ideastorm.
Also Thank you to all that are involved. -
No need, 580M is out
-
We must voice our desire for this to happen! -
-
I am on the same boat. Waiting to buy my very first alienware laptop, but that'll only happen if and when the 580M becomes compatible with the 3D screen. A price deduction won't hurt either.
-
Thanks so much.
Edit: Thanks Katalin for the clarification. -

I also gave my vote on ideastorm. I am certain that the 580m will be made compatible with the 3D version of R3, and as someone else have said, otherwise it would just defeat the whole purpose of it. The real question is how long it will take Dellienware to do it. Hopefully within a month... -
-
Once the first 580ms come in, hopefully someone will test them out in the 3d model, but I don't have much hopes considering many sites say it is incompatible. -

@DeeX I am the community manger for IdeaStorm. Just wanted to drop in here and let everyone know we have seen the idea post and this thread/poll. All the right eyes are looking at this issue as we speak. As you can all imagine, cutting in a new GPU offering for us takes some time and effort. There's the marketing analysis, then the engineering development and the testing and validation. I am not sure what stage the Aliens are in now, but they're awfully quiet regarding details. That could mean any number of things, and I will pass on speculating. However, just know they are indeed looking at it and will be as transparent as possible when they can. Stay tuned. I think we will know something for sure, and it will come in terms of weeks, not months, not days. That's about all I can say for now, but please feel free to fire questions at me. I will directly answer what I can, and I will directly let you know when I can't.
And thanks a ton for the post on IdeaStorm and driving folks there to register and vote. We need all the tech savvy people we can get on the site. In fact, there is a Storm Session (online focus group, more or less) going on now about selling barebones Alienware cases. They also have one coming up later this month about the out of box experience with more launching in upcoming months. We have a team of 6 Idea Partners from Alienware actively watching our boards and ready to jump in and have conversations with AW fans. They are all product developers or product manangers. We would be thrilled to see the NBR community crossing over and spending a little time with us at IdeaStorm, but please don't take that as our wanting to poach users from this site. We love it as is. -

Thanks for stopping by, Bill, you should know that your answer is very much appreciated!
Looking forward to hearing from you with updates on this thread's topic whenever they become available for you to share.
On a sidew note: I will personally vote for the selling of barebone AW cases as i bought one myself from a reseller and boy it was hard to find one. -
Hey nice to see a Dell rep here! I too am only holding back buying a new Alienware because I want the 580m with 3D. As soon as there is some kind of word, good or bad, out I will make my decision

^ thanks man.

You know, it would probably not hurt much of the Dells grand schemes if there was some kind of reassurance that what people are looking for is going to be addressed at some point, even if it is unknown exactly how long it is going to take.
I think the perception is that if we get something done in 3D area of m17x-r3, it is going to be more of a coincidence then actually addressing customer needs.
I think what we need is a better communication with regards to future offering, planed upgrades, product changes. Some kind of a road map would have been very useful. A lot of people feel they are being strung along because the very definition of Alienware brand implies the latest and greatest being available first here. Yet we see other vendors offer better high end option for months while it is not even clear that Alienware will have anything to offer other then mediocre 460m.
You can see how someone can get discouraged. So how about some transparency. If there is a better 3D option coming down the road lets hear that fact and lets get an ETA so people can do other things then check here on daily basis for a hope of an update. -

currently configurable (GTX 580M + 3D/120Hz WLED) in the u.k., available to the u.s. soon?
-
Hmm It seems our dilemma is solved; the only problem is that dell is going to charge an arm and a leg for those of us with 460m's trying to upgrade to a 580m...
-
For those that can order it, is it known if the 580m with the 120Hz screen works with the internal screen using 3D Vision and not just an external screen?
-
-
A05 is the latest bios revision that is shipping with laptops now from what I have been reading.
-
Only thing Dell needs to take al look at now is how we can use ATI/Nvidia drivers from ATI/Nvidia and not those outdated Dell drivers.
Dell does not update their drivers on the support site leaving us, the user with old buggy drivers. Sometimes modded drivers work but not always.
-
Hmmm, well I have seen that it is available through the UK site, but the 580M is still not configurable with the 3D 120Hz screen in the US. It seems we still have a ways to go before finally getting 3DVision support.
Has anyone actually orderred this through the UK site, and received it? Does anyone know of a review of the system configured this way? Is there any hope for those with the 485M wanting 3dVision at this time? Thanks. -
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M Review featuring Alienware M17x R3 Laptop - Introduction
Here's one with 3D and the 580m. -
For US orders if you order through Dell AAFES you can configure and place an order for GTX 580M and 3D 120hz screen right now.
They also let you get 560M but you cannot choose the 3D screen with it.
Here are all the video card options available:
1GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6870M
1.5GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M
2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6970M
2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M
1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M
I would just go and order 580M as an upgrade but I think it may be a pain to get right now, not to mention it might be cheaper if I just sell my current system and order a new one.
I would also like to get a confirmation that 580M with 120Hz is working with the internal pannel in 3D. -
I found through the epp, I could configure it with all the 580M and the 3D 120Hz screen, but could not finalize the order. There were complications as seen in
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-now-available-nvidia-580m-7.html#post7742216
I am curious if anyone is able to complete the order for the M17X R3 with the 3D 120Hz screen and the 580M through AAFES...?
