Absolutely. I would happily take any of those options (preferrably the 580m :p)

If any of you haven't chimed in on ideastorm yet, then please do! We really need to show dell that this matters to us.

I agree.. The number of votes even here is not matching with the amount of "promotes" on ideastorm. Come on people!!!

Dell does realize that the small amount of people from NBR is fraction of interested people. This can demonstrate things. :)

Dell called me today to ask me how do I like my 4 weeks old m17x. I told them what I think about the graphics card offering in 3D model line. It sucks.

The guy tried to sell me additional warranty to add to the 1 year I got with the purchase so I can protect my investment in many years to come. So I told him, why would I want additional warranty if I may not keep this system for more then a year anyway. I told him I will wait to see if they start offering 485m or 580m because that would be the reason I would want to keep this system for longer then 1 year.

Ohh well, maybe some of this will sink into their head.

Why in the world does it cost so much? That's gotta be double the price for it's ATI counterpart with equal performance...

    485M is currently $750 not $900. Sager/eurocoms prices are gouged :p
If or when the newer card for nvidia comes it will be cheaper from Dell, especially because the reps can be negotiated. :)

I just have the money for the M18x invested so the difference in the cost of the cards is pretty much already paid for in returns. I'm taking advantage of the delay in the 580M :)

Will it support the 3d screen though?

well of course its not gonna be free lol, you dont have to return the entire system just to wait a for upgrades. it they just either send you the part or get it installed, its not like everyone has the extra $400 over the 6970m to spend

better parts are not gonna be the same price as inferior parts. regardless if i have to buy the clevo part or from Dell

I don't think it is clear right now. Their web site is messed up right now with descriptions saying one thing, ordering options showing another. M18x supoused to have 580 SLI but you can't order it and m17x has it but you can't combine it with 3D screen. Though it says in the description as a feature of the m17x to be 3D with 580m in the same spec list.

    Let's wait and see.

I configured it this morning when it came out by auto selecting the 1799$ 3d deal, and it had the 580m as an option.

Glad to see alienware back on top.

Well congrats! Not sure if we did anything but still was nice to voice our opinion. Now with that said since its not with the 120Hz panel we need to get a test goin with a Dell card. ;p also I still will persue the Ideastorm thread. We were requesting a high end 3D card not just a high end nvidia to be added to the line. Lacking 3D defeats this purpose.

So please feel free to still promote and add comments on the ideastorm.

Also Thank you to all that are involved. :)

I am on the same boat. Waiting to buy my very first alienware laptop, but that'll only happen if and when the 580M becomes compatible with the 3D screen. A price deduction won't hurt either.

The new 580 is just too much money. So I am debating between the 6970m and the GTX 460m. Having both, what's your thoughts? Also, red versus black? One you like better? Does red look too strange?

    Thanks so much.

Edit: Thanks Katalin for the clarification.

I have the red model, and it looks absolutely gorgeous and not flashy at all. I feared that the stealth black case would make the whole laptop look like a big ugly black box but it's just my taste. Many have chosen the black and are obviously happy with it.

I also gave my vote on ideastorm. I am certain that the 580m will be made compatible with the 3D version of R3, and as someone else have said, otherwise it would just defeat the whole purpose of it. The real question is how long it will take Dellienware to do it. Hopefully within a month...

Does it mean if I get a 580m from a 3rd party retailer now and put it in my r3 the 3D would still work? (which means the only thing to do after the installation of the hardware is to update some drivers, and there's no need for additional hardware & software tweaking?)

That was a glitch; it didn't let me complete the order.

Once the first 580ms come in, hopefully someone will test them out in the 3d model, but I don't have much hopes considering many sites say it is incompatible.

Where does it say that? That wouldnt make sense. I have faith that since it is officially supported, it will eventually show up with the 3D ability.

@DeeX I am the community manger for IdeaStorm. Just wanted to drop in here and let everyone know we have seen the idea post and this thread/poll. All the right eyes are looking at this issue as we speak. As you can all imagine, cutting in a new GPU offering for us takes some time and effort. There's the marketing analysis, then the engineering development and the testing and validation. I am not sure what stage the Aliens are in now, but they're awfully quiet regarding details. That could mean any number of things, and I will pass on speculating. However, just know they are indeed looking at it and will be as transparent as possible when they can. Stay tuned. I think we will know something for sure, and it will come in terms of weeks, not months, not days. That's about all I can say for now, but please feel free to fire questions at me. I will directly answer what I can, and I will directly let you know when I can't.
And thanks a ton for the post on IdeaStorm and driving folks there to register and vote. We need all the tech savvy people we can get on the site. In fact, there is a Storm Session (online focus group, more or less) going on now about selling barebones Alienware cases. They also have one coming up later this month about the out of box experience with more launching in upcoming months. We have a team of 6 Idea Partners from Alienware actively watching our boards and ready to jump in and have conversations with AW fans. They are all product developers or product manangers. We would be thrilled to see the NBR community crossing over and spending a little time with us at IdeaStorm, but please don't take that as our wanting to poach users from this site. We love it as is. ;)

Thanks for stopping by, Bill, you should know that your answer is very much appreciated!
Looking forward to hearing from you with updates on this thread's topic whenever they become available for you to share.

On a sidew note: I will personally vote for the selling of barebone AW cases as i bought one myself from a reseller and boy it was hard to find one.

yes thx for taking the time to let us know what is going on, remember that regardless of imperfect marketing (which I 100% believe) AW is supposed to be a market leader in every respect demanding top money for everything they offer, if they fall short it is a blight on AW and could and has driven customers elseware, if AW is going to offer 3D then it needs to be as good as or better than the competition, in my opinion AW has failed in this respect and have some catching up to do, the 485m is now old and will obviously not be implemented but many of us are totally bewildered as to why AW would offer the 580m without 3D - truely truely flawed to the extreme, I have purchased Dell computers for the last 15 years and worked for a company where we had a corporate global account with Dell with over 100,000 employees, I am truely at a loss as to why Dell is falling short with this, I can only imagine it is because of some sort of contract agreement with AMD which in my opinion is foolish, if AMD cannot produce what customers want then sobeit - let the customers choose, when I pay nearly $5000 for a laptop I don't want Dell forcing or limiting my choices - this is a serious market flaw, right now I'd be sacking people

Thanks for the update. The vague hints I’m reading in your email are better than just dead silence we have been getting thus far. The ideastorm thread is under review, I know, but what does it mean exactly? Is it going to be under review for few weeks and decided on, or is it going to be like that for a year or till it is convenient to be acted upon? It has been over a month without any kind of commitment to address this issue. How long does it take to gather the subject experts and make a decision?

You know, it would probably not hurt much of the Dell’s grand schemes if there was some kind of reassurance that what people are looking for is going to be addressed at some point, even if it is unknown exactly how long it is going to take.

I think the perception is that if we get something done in 3D area of m17x-r3, it is going to be more of a coincidence then actually addressing customer needs.

I think what we need is a better communication with regards to future offering, planed upgrades, product changes. Some kind of a road map would have been very useful. A lot of people feel they are being strung along because the very definition of Alienware brand implies the latest and greatest being available first here. Yet we see other vendors offer better high end option for months while it is not even clear that Alienware will have anything to offer other then mediocre 460m.

You can see how someone can get discouraged. So how about some transparency. If there is a better 3D option coming down the road let’s hear that fact and let’s get an ETA so people can do other things then check here on daily basis for a hope of an update.

correct question, the 485m worked with the 120hz panel but not internal 3D, but the configuration says 3D bundle so you could almost assume it works, I'd like to know the system bios for this latest addition

Only thing Dell needs to take al look at now is how we can use ATI/Nvidia drivers from ATI/Nvidia and not those outdated Dell drivers.

Dell does not update their drivers on the support site leaving us, the user with old buggy drivers. Sometimes modded drivers work but not always.

    :( :(

Hmmm, well I have seen that it is available through the UK site, but the 580M is still not configurable with the 3D 120Hz screen in the US. It seems we still have a ways to go before finally getting 3DVision support.

Has anyone actually orderred this through the UK site, and received it? Does anyone know of a review of the system configured this way? Is there any hope for those with the 485M wanting 3dVision at this time? Thanks.

For US orders if you order through Dell AAFES you can configure and place an order for GTX 580M and 3D 120hz screen right now.

They also let you get 560M but you cannot choose the 3D screen with it.

Here are all the video card options available:
    1GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6870M
    1.5GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6970M
    2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M
    1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

I would just go and order 580M as an upgrade but I think it may be a pain to get right now, not to mention it might be cheaper if I just sell my current system and order a new one.

I would also like to get a confirmation that 580M with 120Hz is working with the internal pannel in 3D.
