We are, but that price...damn :/

I was excited until I learned on the non-3d support. It is kinda pointless then, the 6970m is still way better bang for the buck. Unless they offer RGB or another nice screen that is 120hz WLED quality or higher, I don't see the point of getting the 580m when there is the m18x and m17x r2
-
4th dimension was used, on Michael Jackson's Captain Eo (mispelled earlier). If you didn't know, Lucas was behind the production. And the PC behind them were Amiga's running Toast and Lightwave, if my memory serves me well. Excited a lot of us Amiga users back then. And that was when 3D was taking off before Terminator 2 exploded the whole craze...which again is a great thing!
The 4th dimension is another thing itself
I've played with it when I was heavily into math and competition but nothing more. Check this out,

I'm in the same boat really. I would like to upgrade but my aging eyes need this nice RGB and extra real estate. It's hard to go back really, even from my desktop Dell 30"s. When the video is too old to run future games I'll consider
-
look i newer talked about the way old red/green Cardboard glasses 3D.
what i was talking about was the 3D the Asus V3800 (around 1998) that worked youdst like it does today except you could youse any monitor or screen
and way old review of the Asus V3800 with 3D http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/asus-v3800.html its at the bottom thats what im talking about. -
People are looking at this the wrong way. Yes the small performance increase is not enough to justify the price premium, but the appeal to me is the 120hz screen! It would allow us to play games at more than 60 fps, that's the real performance increase, games would be a lot smoother, 3d is just an extra benefit not a necessity, so that's why the 580M appeals to me.
Had it been the same 60hz screen for both then I wouldn't think about paying that much extra not even for a moment. -
+1
I want to get the 3D system and then maybe get the 580 later. However the thing that hurts me is the 460. Yes its a decent card - but I dunno if or even when there will be another card. -

Agreed. I really want that screen but don't want the weak 460m. It's ridiculous that they don't have compatibility at the very least nailed down for the 580m and the 120 hz screen. I could care less about 3D, but I want to be able to use the 580m with that screen. As it stands right now, I'll probably just get a 6970. -
Same here, as soon as the 580m + 120Hz kit is available I will order a m17x. I hope AW will figure out how to deal with the problem soon, in the end 580m is still being introduced. M18x didn't get it yet, and so on.

I would go to that dell Ideastorm link in my sig and promote the thread.. yes it says 485 but that wasnt the point of the thread. It was to get a better card for the 3D systems. Now that they have a nice nvidia card in their line up its more possible for this to happen!
This is still under review and if many people are interested in a 580M with 3D let your voice be heard!
Please go "promote" on the Dell ideastorm, and comment!
Thanks! -
Without 3D there's essentially no compelling reason to spend such a ridiculous amount of money to get what will probably end up being a marginal performance increase. Really, it's not like it's a dual gpu card or something. It's crazy to let these companies steal your money like this because people can't show any common sense and restraint ;D
I play Rift on my 6970 with settings maxed and it runs like a champ. If I raid I can drop a few settings down a bit to get super performance. Seems pretty good to me, for 350 bucks less. -
I dont understand why people are buy Alienware computers, they are underpowered and way to expensive.
-
Says the guy with an Alienware computer in his signature ? LOL.
-
Sarcasm.
Dont understand this whole AMD/Nvidia war on here.
People talking about best bang for buck, well that certainly isnt Alienware. As far as design goes this laptop is great. -
Yeah i am not a big fan of the war either.. i own Nvidia in my desktop and AMD in my laptop so i could care less either way and am not bias one bit (other then Nvidias ridiculous mobile pricing).
But people need to do what makes them happy and thats all that matters at the end of the day honestly.
When people start foaming at the mouth telling people why they should not spend they're money on something is when i have problem
.
Its they're money so let them be

+1 for the most intelligent post up to now on these 580m threads, Quadzilla. -
I think the issue is 3D or no 3D not ATI vers Nvidia
in a few years time there will be no need for glasses as the latest LCD transparent tech allows LCD panels to be layered one on top of the other -
Apart from a few speeling mistaks.
-
I'm kind of thinking about how much I want that RGBLED screen in the M18x. If I wait for that, the price will cool a bit on the 580's. Seems like a win win.

What are you, a teacher? Most of the people on this forum are not native english speaking and trying to help all of us with the knowledge and experience acquired. There is no need to use sarcasm...

As long as i understood what he said, it's fain!
Some of us post using a phone or tablet and trust me it's a PITA (autospelling, small buttons etc.).
Also you should consider what juliant said, too
Cheers -
Yes actually i posted that from my Dell Streak 5 but i never thought i would get someone's panties in a bunch over some grammatical errors.
I was wrong

English is my native language but hey we are not all perfect and its just a forum . I do my best

I have the Alienware m17x r3 with the 460m GTX card and the 120HZ screen. So right now I ordered the 580 M from dell.. Long story because my laptop was received with a flawed gfx card and I was not pleased because it was causing problems so they decided to compensate me and replace it with the 580M and the technician from dell will place it for me in my m17x r3 as a repair. So what you guys are saying that when he fits in the 580M the screen wont run cuz its 120 hz :O??!
-
I wasn't serious. Just letting you know.

That's interesting, since Dell has stated numerous times that the 580m is not currently compatible with that screen, or at least with 3D. My guess is that the screen will work but 3D won't. Please update us on how the upgrade goes, since this could have ramifications for everyone if it turns out to work fully. -
If the 580m works with the 120hz, then it might be worth it (even if no 3d). 3d is great and all, but it isn't something I use everyday. I could live without it, but I love the brightness of the screen and wouldn't trade that.
-
See if you can find a reseller that has the 580m and possibly accepts returns(even with a restocking fee its worth a try) in case it does not work .
It should work though as the 485 did so its probably nothing more then the lack of 3d why Dell will not offer it with the 120hz screen. -
TostitoBandito Notebook Evangelist
Agreed, I would buy it with the 120 Hz display if it is at least fully functional, sans 3D. I'd also love for Dell to let you choose that display WITHOUT the glasses and 3D bundle. I just want the better screen. -

I have the same thoughts exactly I really do not care less if the 3d works or not because, the card at the end of the day is 3d capable. Which means they should be able to offer the 3d software compatibility sooner or later. But the problem is and what im worried about, is if technician adds the gtx 580 in my laptop instead of the 460 and because its not compatible with the 120 hz screen the screen doesnt work >.<. So your thoughts is that it should work fine with my 120 hz screen? The weird thing is if you scroll down here
GeForce.com - Get the Most Out of Your GPU
on this NVIDIA page you can see it says 3D vision No, so im really worried that fitting the 580 M in my laptop turns out to be a waste of time. Ill be sure to update you guys if it works fine. But do you guys think itll work just fine with the 120 hz screen? -
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
I can almost bet its price that it will work with the screen, maybe no 3D for now..
-
i think BFG and other card manufactures should make mxm upgrade cards, there seems to be a market for many people looking to upgrade
-
BFG got out of the video card market over a year ago.
