I just got off of the phone with Dell to cancel that order. What a joke. Got transferred three or four times, hung up on, the works. Seemed like a deterrent.

I ordered an M17x R3 on 25 Jan with a 30% discount, then cancelled it when the SB chipset fiasco set in, not because of the SB problem, but because I wasn't sure if I'd need a huge, heavy laptop after my Iraq deployment is over next year.
Then the L502 came out, so I ordered one that day (22 Feb) with the then-current 25% discount. (config in sig)
Then the M17x R3 came back out a few days ago, but this time with the AMD 6970 card.
So now I'm trying to change back to the R3, but only if i can get the original 30% discount. I emailed the AAFES Cust Rep, who passed me on to a Dell.com Advisor-Concierge (yeah, I'm cool - I have a Concierge!) I'm calling her tomorrow and see what happens.

HAHAH the avatar is just insurance in case I get in trouble by the mods :p (Or hopefully to tickle their funny bone when they're about to warn me for something :))

So this is the correct thread for me, right? I want to try and avoid posting in the Order Status thread, because it's a mix of R2 and R3(new orders) in there.

I was unable to Choose a custom Name Plate on my AAFES ordered R3 as well.. I was thinking about calling Dell to see if this can be added after the fact.

Yes I have a custom nameplate. When I configured it the first time on 1/28, I had that option. It shows up in your Order Tracking receipt on aafes as well. But when you go to track it through Dell's Order Status page, nothing shows up. You can call dell and speak to a csr to verify what yours says though.

Are you guys saying that you didn't have the option to customize one when you were configuring?

    Also, good morning heheh.

Call any of the dell csr numbers, and talk to a CSR and ask. Anyone should be able to help you out. Are you saying it doesn't have the customized name plate on your order receipt? Or are you saying it doesnt give you the option to customize one while you're picking your upgrades aka configuring your order?

Nope, there is no option to customize the nameplate when ordering through AAFES website.. It just says Standard nameplate on the receipt. I guess they ship it with a blank plate? This is odd because I configured an order before the recall and had the option to customize.

I ordered mine through AAFES, and i had no option to get the custom nameplate when I ordered. I called up and talked to the dell rep, and he said that if it wasn't online he couldn't do it without sending an email to a guy at the factory, and even then it wasn't a guarantee. Plus I would have had to wait an extra day to order, and I really didn't want to do that. :)
So, basically they might be able to change it for you if you call. But the default that comes with it just says M17X. Also, if you call a dell rep after you recieve the laptop, it seems like you could get a custom nameplate shipped to you after the fact for no charge. A couple of people on here did that, there's a thread on it.

You'd think even if they missed it you could buy a nameplate for like.. $5.

From the pics I've seen it just looks like there are 4 phillips-head screws holding it in.

I might try to get a custom nameplate after the machine ships. I'd like to have a blank nameplate to reattached if/when it becomes necessary to sell or hand the computer down, although I feel like I'll be more than a little sentimental about my first high-performance laptop (something I've always wanted since I was a kid).

It'll probably have a better resale value without customizations.

I had the option at first, and then cancelled and reordered, and my order status has the following:
    1 331-1350 Custom Nameplate
    1 330-6106 Personalized Nameplate Trigger

    >>That means I'll have my custom nameplate, right? I'm not sure why you guys arent getting it. Maybe it's cuz they basically transferred over my original order and just changed the 2 parts (6970 and the warranty).

Same here. If you search my sn on NBR, you'll see that I've posted thousands (EDIT: hundreds--hehehe) of posts about what notebook should I get, etc etc LOLZ. Eventually decided to get this guy, mostly cuz of the discount, and of course, because it does everything I want it to do. My dream laptop, actually :) Besides the giganto size, it's perfect.

I got an R3 for my wife with all of the lowest specs. She's playing The Sims 3 on a Dell M1530, so anything's an improvement. I ordered it March 4th, and on that same day, Aafes went from the 10% to almost a 25% discount. For the difference, I can up her screen to the 1080p, and the GPU to the 6970. I called and canceled the order. I will be reordering as soon as they refund the money.

Just to letcha know, aafes does not offer discounts on accessories. Also, since they're not available to "configure" (aka buy) on aafes, you have to email/call the dell rep and tell him whatcha want. If they did do the discount, I wouldve totally gotten a pair of Logitech G27's lolz.

You sir, are indeed husband material :) My gf thinks I'm wasting money buying this thing, but then again she thinks everything's a waste of $. I guess I'm lucky as well to not have a materialistic girl. But, if it makes you any happy, she is also into video games as well, and can easily whoop me in MvC2 and 3.

But yah, I'm like your wife, in that anything's an improvement over my dinodesktop and dinolaptop. AMD Athlon XP 64 3200+, 2gb Ram(just upgraded like 4months ago heheh, it was 1gb before that), and ATI Radeon 9600PRO 256mb. The laptop has AMD Turion X2 TL-58, 1gb ram, and GeForce 7150M. So as you can see, I come from very humble beginnings :)

    Thank goodness for aafes.

Anyone know of any other organizations which offer larger discounts for Dell/Alienware? I know for some companies like Panasonic, they offer companies they do business with some type of EPP program.

I just ordered from aafes and maxed out everything. Total price was about $4279 with a little more then $900 in savings. Now time for the waiting game.

So with my order placed, do I go to Dells site to check the status or aafes?

Hmm, I might have to look into AAFES. Although I have family that qualify for EPP though Dell. Their company actually gets an EPP discount greater than 10%, so I'd have to compare prices. I don't really want to buy an R3, but it's a great price. Might have to get it past the fiance :p Doubt she'll go for it lol. Though AAFES may in the end be the way to go for me.

$900 savings is not that bad actually. Be glad that they don't charge us tax or shipping. Tax is the thing I hate most about shopping online sometimes, cuz they still charge it.
