I felt the need to quote this post as a reminder.

With the lack of updates, no responses to emails and the overall poor communication, I am beginning to lose faith in almost everything that you have said in this rather confidence inspiring post above. After this amount of time, you must have some idea of what platforms the 7970M works on or some initial thoughts. I was quite excited to hear this post because it was professional and inspired a sense of goodwill. I hope I do not end up regretting my purchase. I hope a positive outcome is the end result.

At the end of the day, you still have to keep sight on who it is you're dealing with, and temper your expectations.

Yes, that is very true and if I hear no communication, I will simply get a refund either through Paypal or my Credit Card. However, I will give it a little more time to see if there are any updates. Patience is not the problem here as some seem to suggest.

I pulled the plug and get refunded. Originally I jumped on it because of the ship date. Since that has fallen through there really is no reason not to just wait for dell OEM.

I believe the part number is 747m2. Tell them you own a r4 or they'll tell you it won't work. Also make sure they know it's for a laptop as I have a desktop 7970 at my house now because if those clowns.

Currently they are out of stock. At least in north America.

    Dell - 1(877)717-3355
Automated computer - "I'd like to order a part"
    EParts services answers - "I'd like to order a 7970m, part # 747m2 (747Mary2), I have a m17x r4 alienware that I will be installing it in"
"It's backordered, we will call you back in 2-3 days when it's available again. It will cost 564.92"
"Does it come with xbracket and thermal pads/screws?"
    "It's a kit"

    What a weird price.

Not a bad price compared to what a single 580m used to cost from dell. ;)

Thanks for the info! and wow at 67 degrees with Diablo 3 (my 580m hovers around 77-82 degrees while playing it for about 2 hours)

About the audio over HDMI, have you tried these drivers?

    AMD_Catalyst_12.5_Beta.rar

i checked them and they seem to have a separate section for HDMI, thought maybe give it a shot because I would think the Dell cards/VBIOS should have audio over HDMI

Well by the looks of it they only got a couple of cards through and are basically waiting for more cards before they can meet orders, probably the same time or after other companies get hold of theirs.

If they were truly testing they would have shipped to those machines they had cleared already.

I would not be surprised if they "finished testing" around the 24th onwards, when the second shipments are coming through.

Nothing that I know off other that the basics. eBay, marketplace etc. I called dell today and asked about a card ( I call everyday) and they said they'll try to get approval and call me in a few days. We will see.

Does Dell sell the 7970m as a kit to help install it or is it just the card itself?

I'm not sure if they are sold as a kit. I never got that far with dell. I assume they will need a x-bracket with the cards. I'm guessing the brackets and screws will be extra.

I bought my 6970's from upgradeyourlaptop(eurocom) when I upgrade my 5870's I'm my m17xr2. They were good to deal and the kit was complete with proper screws and they even sent me thermal pads. I had one of the cards die on me after a month and they had no problem replacing it for me. I have had good luck with them although it might be safer to go will a dell card as far as bios working (fans, audio output) out of the box. I'm going to go with dell cards this upgrade as long as the wait is not to long. Eurocom cards will work and they posted YouTube video of them doing it , I'm just gun-shy from my last go with the clevo cards.

Yeah, looks like they're still with two ES 7970M's and they already tested them on all possible laptops within this month probably. They just lying because they don't have these cards yet, thats what i thought at the start. And thats why they're not informing NBR - because they have nothing to say, all they do at this moment is lying to you guys.

-1000 rep to eurocom, they have tried to attract many people with 4may shipping date, but what now? they're loosing all customers.

I agree they are pissing off a lot of People with bad delivery dates but how much of the screw up was there fault and how much was there suppliers fault? Regardless they need to work on there P.R. Skills to the customer.

If they had a date with the supplier and it fell through, if they were honest about it then I would have had no issue with eurocom.

I still have issues with upgradeyourlaptop after what they did to Turbo Talon. They told him they would pay him $100 or so if he made a video on installing 6970's in the M17x R2 that they could use. Well they took his video and cut contact with him and used the video. Totally dismissed him. Sad customer relations and work ethic on their part.

Will it be possible to have automatic fan control? Seems like I should just go ahead and plop for a M17x r4 soon, when I can sell off my current r2 for around $2000.

Not sure if they used Turbo's video, if they did it was briefly but they didn't hold up their end of the bargin. I know that much.

No one has been able to get a hold of the Clevo cards, so for now thats unconfirmed. Dell cards don't have automatic fan control. At least I don't think they do. I will be testing the 7970 from my R4 in the R2. I have an R4 arriving today to play around with. Don't think I'll keep it long as I don't need it. Probably get rid of it for a desktop.

I think I should get a desktop as well, but I love the Alienware brand (but would not really look at Alienware desktops since custom made ones are cheaper. Much cheaper.

Either way I've gotten in contact with a Dell rep who said I get Journo discounts (win). Australia's EPP is 10% max so I figure it's along those lines. What's the most discount someone has received here recently?

Yea, it's probably about 10%. Not sure what the most is yet. I picked up an i7 3720, 6GB 1600MHz, 500GB HDD, 7970M, 1080P, Win7 Home for $1,211 total. Didn't have to pay taxes or shipping. Priced now at Dell it's just under $2K before taxes and shipping. It was an AAFES pricing error and the majority of orders were canceled due to the price error, bus some slipped through. Apparently I was one of the lucky ones as mine looks like it was delivered 45 min ago according to the fedex tracking. :D But I don't need it. I agree though custom desktops are much better. Which is the route I'll go once I get rid of the R4. After a few benching rounds of course. :p Probably won't bench it like crazy as I did with the R2 though lol.

I'm waiting for some landslide numbers lol aahahaha.
From what I've heard and seen it seems your CPU is also unlocked in the bios so you can OC a little using the preset level 1,2 and 3 CPU OCs. That should be some fun!

What a deal and price though! Insane. If there was anything like that kinda price down under everyone would know it was definitely a mistake lol. Prices down here for Alienware and Dell in general are way up there :(

    Cheers. :)

That's harsh eurocom back out of a deal like that. I sent them my m17xr2 to upgrade to the 6970's because when I installed the ones I bought from them it would not post. It was a bad card. They had it for a week fixed it and sent it back. Few days latter they posted a install video of them doing the upgrade to my laptop on YouTube. ( I know it was mine from where the clips were broken on front pannel)

Here is the quote I was searching for. I was wrong, he didn't make a video, but did all the research for Eurocom. Who then took his work and ran and then cut all contact with him once they had what they wanted. Definately speaks to the business values over at Eurocom/upgradeyourlaptop

Kinda weird that a company would outsource a third party to do research on something they should already know given their resources and given the work nbr already did. Eurocom is sketch sometimes but i have had good buying experiences with them until now....

But back then i was in contact with John Shore.

    Hmmm...
I really want upgradeyourlaptop to come through for me. I have been in contact with them for almost a week of back and forth communication. I really hope that we can come to a mutual agreement. Communication has been good. (Haven't heard from them today, yet)

I don't know if I am the first (doubt it) but I would like to be one of the first people to stuff 2 7970M into a M17r2. Yes I know that it really doesn't have the PSU to supply the juice for two 100W cards. I figured I would cross that bridge when I got to it.

But there is a lot of space between now and then. I'm not an electricle engineer and have hopes that there might be a way to modify 330 PSU to lie and identify itself as the 240W PSU.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

u mean the other way round surely? let the 240W PSU lie and identify itself as a 330 PSU? otherwise it wouldnt make sense....

besides, 100W is not always 100W :p compared to the 580M/675M the 7970M has been shown to consume way less power during load (see notebookcheck review of the m17x R4 as reference), so u might actually be able to pull it off after all ^^

    cheers

Just to give you guys a update, I called dell (USA) and after about a hour they said I could not buy the 7970m kit. It's not for sale unless purchased on original order. Complete bullsh*t. At the end of the conversation they said seeing as I bought the laptop in Canada to contact the Canadian branch of dell. So I called then up and I gave them the part number(747m2) and told them it was for the 17mr4 and I want two to put in my m18xr1. After 20 mins on hold they said the are out of stock and they will have more in 8 days and that they will phone me as soon as they arrive to sell me two. I can't believe you can get two totally different answers from the same company. I also called Eurocom today and they said if I want I can put my name on the preorder list for $575 for each card. They said they will have some in stock in ten days. Looks like timing is going to be the same for delivery no matter who's card you buy.
