As I own several clevo based laptops I too am very disappointed that the chassis most likely will not support the 7970M or 680M.
This is most likely a design choice by Clevo, and although it may on us enthusiasts, it is a sound business decision and we cannot really fault them for that... they want to sell more chassis and this is one of the best ways to go about it ://
KEEP THAT LANGUAGE FOR YOURSELF, PLEASE.

SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
bro, do you still need to me run the overrider? it doesn't appear that the 7970m or 680m will work in the entire HM series so its a moot point -
I made my decision,i go for the M17xR4 with i7-3720qm and HD 7970m!
64 GB msata and 500 GB HDD.I put my two ssd in it and
own a great new system! -
nah, not worth it to upgrade to a slightly "facelifted" laptop with IB and mSATA, especially when u already own a HM series machine! of course i wouldve LOVED to upgrade to a 7970M, given its 50% perf boost over the 485M/580M/675M/6990M, but that not being the case is not gonna make me sell this (otherwise wonderful) beast of mine just to upgrade to an EM series. next year with AMD 8000 series and Nvidia 700 series coupled with Haswell might be different though, especially since my 2 year warranty will then have served its purpose
cheers -
Well i got a HM version too, i just hope someone makes some kind of a workaround or fix to make the 7970M POST!
It must be possible somehow
-
our resident bios-magician Prema has already ported the necessary EM series BIOS code to the HM BIOS, he would just need a Clevo 7970M to test it on his HM machine
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
Man why do you Alienware users always post stuff in the Alienware forum when it applies to all users?
Yes I just spoke with Prema, he also says that the likely problem is thermal shutdown because clevo messes with the EC, and, there is not yet enough info on EC.
I don't like taking his words and posting them but I think he spends more time BIOS modding than posting.
-
and thats exactly how we want him to be
-
Hello everyone.
With that bios, Ivy Bridge could work on our P1*0HM ? -
nah, were just talking about GPUs here
-
basically it comes down to this; if there is a way that th EC firmware can be directly modified/reflashed, that would solve most compatiblity issues in both the Clevos and in the Alienware notebooks with fan control issues.
-
yup, word. just that as far as i know, the EC is so locked down that nobody can really get a proper readout and analyze/modify its contents, hm?
-
Has anybody been successful ordering a 747m2 (7970m kit) from DELL? I just got off the phone with an EPARTS rep and he said Dell no longer makes them.
How in the hell?
-
Postal Painmaker Notebook Consultant
They told me there are waiting on stock. I don't think they know what the hell they are talking about. I called 4 times , got 4 different People in parts and 4 different answers. Horrible. -
Is it worth upgrading from a 6970m now, or should I wait for one more generation of cards to go by? I am pretty satisfied with the performance of the 6970m, although it can't max out some newer games, especially with directx 11. On a related note what price can a year old 6970m fetch?
-
Looks like it's a good thing I've got the P170em, currently with the 670m but as soon as I can source a 7970m I'll be upgrading, the performance looks amazing...
-
any iidea where yo buy this card? ii need to know dell? Eurocom? WA AW
-
Eurocom, i believe 520$ from upgradeyour(something)
From what i understand he works with eurocom. They are currently testing the cards and will have them available soon. -
I have a 7970m order with Eurocom and ordered May 1.... They told me May 14th I should have it [I was one of the first pre orders]. Then they pushed that back to telling me I should have gotten it today. Then thursday they told me they have errors with the cards.
Now if I want the 7970m I'm going to have to wait another 2-4 weeks most likely.
Honestly .
And then I wanted to downgrade to the GTX 670m and just planned on upgrading next year to the newer cards. I emailed the person I've been in contact with at Eurocom and told them to just downgrade me to the GTX 670m and refund me the $200 or so difference when they can get a chance.
He didn't reply that day, so now it won't even begin getting built until next week......
Really really not enjoying this.
I hoped that I'd have it 2 weeks ago with the card 7970m that I wanted.
Now I've waited an entire MONTH and am not going to get the card I wanted.
I could have gotten a machine with a GTX 670m within 1 week if I ordered it May 1.
Seriously..... So much stress and lack of gaming etc. for a gamer/PC addict and then I dont even get a prompt response to try to get me a DOWNGRADED PC, faster? -
why dont u just order the P150EM with the 7970M preinstalled? less hassle and also cheaper to do
and yeah well, i also had to wait close to 3 months because of the SB MOBO recall when i ordered my P150HM. its business as usual, so chill out
cheers -
Well im still holding back on ordering anything, cause im one of the ppl hoping for a bios "fix" for my Clevo P170HM, cause i just want to upgrade the GPU instead of the entire laptop this year
2720QM, 16 GB ram and a 7970M should be enough for me
i dont need that Ivy Bridge stuff :b
-
word! holding on to this wonderful machine for at least another year
no promises anymore when haswell enters the stage tho
-
Well this may be business as usual but it shouldn't be. Other people who ordered the same day as me have already got there's in hand. ...
-
but it is business as usual. in every gen theres always the people that get their machine first, no matter what. was the same with SB, some ppl actually got their laptops before the recall happened and enjoyed them for months before anyone else got theirs
thats life i guess!
-
Ughh i dont know what to do... Sell my r3 and get an r4.. Clevo. Or just wait for R5... When are they do out anyway?
-
when the R5 is due? lol that should take a while, like a year or so? considering that the R4 pretty much just came out
if u already have an R3 or Clevo HM i dont see much sense in upgrading. IB, switchable graphics, mSATA and a backlit kb is not really worth it. better keep ur machine, maybe upgrade to a 7970M and then go all out next year when Haswell enters the stage!
-
a year from now maybe. I'm skipping this R4 revision for R5 to see if Haswell is much of an improvement over Ivy.
-
I'm waiting on my 7970M to arrive from Dell. Hopefully early next week.
I'm on the R3 and I plan to upgrade the CPU next to either the 2920 or 2960 (if I find a good price for one). I'll probably keep this beauty for another 2 years before I plan on upgrading. Maybe around the R6 time frame. By then, I'll probably be looking into the M18X, or whatever will be Alienware's dual GPU beast at that time. -
Its just that paying 520 for the 7970 is the same i would pay to buy the r4.. Id sell my r3 for 1400-1500 add in the 520 and have a new nb under warranty, have a better cou and gpu and a better network card... Meeh..
-
If you can't live with what you have now, then sell it and purchase a new one
-
isnt that a bit optimistic to get rid of ur R3 for 1400-1500? its over one year old and usually such machines lose about 50% of their value with each passing year. thus ud be lucky to get 1k for a 2k machine after one year of usage
cheers -
I'd advice you to keep your 2760QM or at best get a 2860QM since the R3 CPU cooling is not efficient enough for the XM CPU (unless you intend to repaste once a month)
-
i thought that only applies to 4Ghz+ overclocks of the XM? @repasting once a month
-
yeah you're right, but then whats the point of getting an XM CPU if you dont intend to overclock?
-
To run faster than what I currently have
Plus it'll help add a few $$$ for resale.
I've seen the 2920s selling for around $300 on ebay. Not a bad price if you ask me. Plus, it might drop down in price in the next few months when I'm ready to upgrade. -
how about compromising, OCing to "just" 4ghz and repasting once every two months?
haha
-
Lmao. 4.4Ghz all cores is fine for gaming, just not fine for constant 100% load for hours upon hours... e.g. rendering or heavy benchmarking.
-
the XM-baker.....err GeoCake has spoken
-
You are still better off waiting because the GTX 670M is not even a whole lot faster than the older GTX 485M and at least 50% slower than a 7970M or more depending on game.
-
So can you confirm this means what I think it does? The 7970M works with audio over HDMI in the Alienware M17x R2?! This could be the best news I've had since I bought my notebook!
Does it work with the standard PSU?
Excuse my lack of knowledge but when you say the fans have to be controlled via HWinfo does it change speed by the temperature or is it a case of manually putting fans to full before/during gaming and reducing it for normal surfing? -
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
With HwInfo you can create a custom 'profile' so the fan spins based on a certain temperature.
-
man, I got so used to your picture so I was wondering who is this other guy with 1024 Raid0 SSD
-
haha yeah, I changed it up a bit. Since I just found out how to make the system properties tab look the same as when you buy a new Alienware machine, I'm quite fond of that particular alien head

How is that 7970m treating you!?
Super excited for mine; should take another 2-3 weeks though
-
OT but Can that work for the GTX485M in the NP8170?
It doesn't look like the 7970M will work in my laptop so far.. -
I've been enjoying it immensely!
Though I have yet to pass the 1000/1500 barrier (Mostly because I'm too lazy lol). I'm sure yours will be a wonderful treat when it arrives! And the driver issue isn't bad either. I'm kinda prefer catalyst's flashy GUI to NVIDIA's boring control panel anyway.
-
Yeah we should get better drivers hopefully within a month but who knows
-
katalin_2003 NBR Spectre Super Moderator
I don't know if Mumak, the developer of HwInfo implemented support for your laptop.
To check, open HwInfo and click the Sensors tab. If you don't see a small brown fan icon near the Reset Min/Max button, then your motherboard is not supported. -
can anyone dump clevo hd 7970m vbios ?
Asus g73jh is on a upgrade with hd 7970m , yay .
he says : the internal screen doesnt work , but external screen through hdmi works , so he thinks its a vbios issue , and he cant install the latest ccc 12.5 ,
it just freeze .
is there any modded driver to work with this card ,
help would be highly appreciated .
thanks -
