    Hi Guys,

Just to update that I have receive my 7970m.. Installed in my R3, kept the 6990m inside the original box and power on.

the card work flawlessly. Run WEI and get 7.9 for graphics (from 7.7 old 6990m).
    At stock clock:
3D mark Vantage and get 20250
    3D Mark 11 and get 5598

One problem though i notice that the screen a bit dimmer from before. Not sure how dim but i set the maximum brightness but seems still a bit dimmer. Any idea what causing this??

Im using driver provided by eurocom : 8.934.2.1-120402a-136728C-ATI

will try other driver later on.

it has been a great day for me.. planning to test on real gaming tonite.

Any other member that have receive and install their 7970m from upgrade your laptop??

Update: Problem of dimm screen solved by change back primary display to PEG and enable the igp. Switching of amd and intel igp works fine too...

I've also gotten the dim screen after installing my 7970M. I have tried 2 separate cards and they are both dim. Did you disable the integrated graphics? I think it has something to do with having it disabled and not using Enduro. I found that if you install and run HWiNFO the screen will brighten up.

i have succesfully upgrade the video driver to 12.6 latest from ATI website.. restart and the brightness still same..
I heard about enduro but i dont know whether it works or not?

i'll try enabling the igp back from bios and see if the problem still exist..

Cool, congrats! Can you do me a favor and check whether you can get the vbios per ATIflash? It seems that it doesn't work for Clevo users, I think it's related to the Clevo systems and not the card, but would be interesting to know.

actually 1st bootup i didnt do anything from the last boot up using the 6990m .. the laptop boot on igp so, i uninstall all amd driver and catalyst.

Then i change the bios from A10 to A08 and restart. Go to bios and disable the igp. then the laptop boot into VGA (from unknown 7970m).

Then I install the driver CD provided by eurocom. It detect and install the 7970m. restart and everything working except the brightness dim..

I had install latest 12.6 driver with no issue but the dim still there.. maybe because of the igp.. i remember before when i tried to disable the igp the same happens with 6990m..

will try to enable the igp back and see whats goes after that..

    Guys,

the dim issue resolved, just go back to bios, enable the Primary display to PEG, enable the IGP then reboot the problem dissapear. the switching now working as 6990m before..

    problem solved!!

daddyz, are you using a custom fan profile or are the fans working on their own automatically?

Except now, you have to deal with the enduro madness and reduced performance.

I have kept my integrated graphics disabled...moving to the 12.7 beta drivers has made my screen brighter. It isn't perfect, but it is a compromise

No need for fan profiles, the fans will automatically work with the 7970m in the R3

we should see if the eurocom guys encountered this problem with their testing. i know for a fact they test them out on the Alienwares for their Alienware customers, not sure what model if that even matters.

Hey slick and daddys should i change to the igp before turning off the system and swapping cards or should i just use your install guide slick?

    the fan works automatically

when i do mine.. i was on A10 bios when i first power up with 7970m and with AMD driver still not uninstalled. So that time the igp still enable and the laptop boot on intel hd graphics due to the new card not identified.

Oh alright. I'm running on the unlocked A08 bios. i'll probably just swap it out and go from there. cant be too much different from when i swapped out my 6970m to the 6990m.

Hi, I was thinking of upgrading my 6990m to a 7970m, I'm currently running the A08 bios, but I have no idea if its unlocked or anything. Is there another bios i have to update to? I'm just doing some research in advance, because in hong kong, getting a 7970m is quite pricy and i want to eliminate any possible problems before committing to buy one (upgrademonkey is selling it for $698) over here.

The unlocked bios A08 is for you to disable the igp. If u can change it in your current bios, meaning its unlocked bios because original dell bios ,all those settings are disabled.

You can refer to slick 1st page of this topics to find the A08 bios if you need ones.

Joey, just use the guide...its much easier to disable the integrated first.

If there is an issue with the 7970m, you just plug your 6990 back in so you are covered either way

If I really need battery life is it worth upgrading to the 7970m if I'm gonna have to deal with enduro and the problems that it brings? I was thinking of upgrading maybe in the next few months, so maybe a better driver will come out to improve the switching.

i got almost 3hrs on my deck over the weekend on battery with 7970m doing light tasks and surfing

I used to get 4hrs with integrated intel graphics.

Ultimately, enduro will be fixed. In the meantime, shut off integrated lol

Hmm alright. Guess I'll keep my eyes out for a cheaper card. Doubt I'll find one as cheap as my 6990m though. :(

BigT, if I were you, I'd wait till the refresh that's coming then get a 7970m cheap. The 8900's have already been spotted in beta drivers lol...it won't be long now (i can't keep up anymore)

Releasing the 8900 series in the near future doesn't sit right with my business sense, but then again I wouldn't complain since I convinced myself to pass on the 7900 series and hold out for the 8900 series lol.

My prediction is that the new refresh from AMD won't come out until December or January. There's no point for them to release the new batch this soon (IMO)

I'd rather keep the R2, or buy another R2 on ebay for the spare parts :)

The R2 seems to be the madders wet dream. ;)

The best thing about the R2 is the lack of an integrated CPU; that seems to cause a world of problems.

It depends. I like the idea of having a IGP , something like the M17x has (the 9400M) but be able to have control over it to manually switch between them. Even if a reboot is required.
