The folders in your root directory are the drivers and installation files that get unpacked for installation. If you are running low on disk space, you should be able to delete those folders and their contents.
Leave the other files and folders alone (in both Program Files directories) as these contain AMD software applications (such as CCC).

I used the dell driver and did the vbios update to A01 with all of the driver sweeps before..
Now I went into Safe Mode and done another driver sweep(s) to until there are no ATI stuff. Then I ran the CClean and removed everything (except HL2 extensions and things like that - .bsp, .dem, .dap etc) and there was no sign of ATI/AMD but the Driver Manager still showed that I am using the dell driver (8.763). so I've decided that it might not matter because stevie isn't here and I won't get any help for now.. =/
andddd... I downloaded the last version (of something) from AMD's site (yes, to my specific GPU and OS etc).
I opened the file I just finished downloading, it created a new folder in C:\ called AMD.
I entered that folder and opened the .exe there and it created a new folder called ATI. It also opened an installer for the catalyst [automatically] and I had to select a language, press next -> select between install or uninstall, I selected install... -> this window disappears and nothing happened, no new folder of ATI/AMD in program files/start menu, no new CCC.exe somewhere.
and then I don't have any driver yet because I deleted it to install a new one which I couldn't even install.
So I tried manually installing the drivers as I did with the dell one (8.763) but I had no success when windows told me my drivers were up to date.
O?)
So for now, I just installed the dell drivers from C:\dell\drivers\packages\drivers\ and windows chose the drivers from this folder.. (like before, that worked and GPU-Z indicated it, look at my thread please)
So now I already removed this fail install of Catalyst and I'm gonna start again.
Do I need to install the Bios A10 before I try installing Catalyst and changing to a newer driver from ATI, and NOT dell. -??-
so... please can someone help me.. =/ -
source144, I'm not sure why this is becoming such a complicated ordeal. After cleaning out all the old drivers and software with Driver Sweeper and CCleaner, simply running the Catalyst setup package should complete everything automatically for you. I'm not sure what steps you are are getting off track with. You should not need to browse to folders anywhere or manually run an executable file.
I would recommend installing the A10 BIOS, but it is not going to have any effect on your ability to install the latest AMD Catalyst package.
Check out this link and try installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 redistributable patch. Then repeat all of the cleaning and installation steps. -
adding +1 rep to alexnvidia and steviejones i was having problems with my dirvers for a while and i thought i did everything correct and it still didnt work. i followed ur guyses steps one by one and my machine is perfection now! thanks again!

Exactly what step were you missing?

Problem sorted now just so everyone knows. Poster is now up and running with AMD drivers....just thought I would update this issue to stop replies. If the poster has any more issues - please post back again.
-
i do not think i uninstalled everything correctly. lets put it this way, when i rebooted from safe mode the first time i do not think i was in VGA graphics bec/ my resolution was 1600x1200. the one i missed the first time was going to device manager and manually uninstalling the display devices. after that, it worked.
cheers!

I think this happens when you have uninstalled drivers, and rebooted normally. Windows will search and update your drivers, hence not being back at VGA. I recall the same issue when I would reboot normally and before I had the chance to do anything, windows had updated my drivers for me, which obvioulsy, I didnt want! - I just wanted to be back at Standard VGA to allow a clean install of the new drivers.
I have a clean install on my system now and find that I do not have to worry about this issue. If and when I want to uninstall an old driver and install a new one, I simply uninstall as per the procedures on page 1, then when I reboot normally, after uninstalling, I just get standard VGA drivers right away. -
shouldn't 11.3 mobility drivers be out now?

Hello Alienware guru's. I have used these forums as a helpful guide in getting to better know my Alienware m17xR2 and now i am curious as if i have my crossfire enabled after installing the new 11.2 CCC.
When i go into the CCCC and into the CrossfireX config settings, i click the check box to enable CrossfireX. I then click the green highlighted "Apply" button and after a brief moment the program seems to be applying the setting due to the time out of the application. However the box that i checked to enable CrossfireX reverts back to being unchecked.
How do i know crossfirex is enabled and ready to be used when permitted ?

batmobileb6 - once you place a check mark in the box to enable and click on the Apply button, it should stay checked until you remove the check mark and click apply.
Make sure you have not enabled stealth mode by mistake. -
nub <<<< after i closed the window i open the CCC up and it was checked. Sorry for wasting yalls time.
-
Welcome to the NBR Forum. Everyone here is all about helping. Never a waste of time, friend. The important thing is it seems like you're working correctly now.
-
first page updated with CAP4 direct and alternative links. fixes includes CRYSIS2 performance enhancements among other titles. also, i've posted ChrisM@Dell's email so we can get more users to try the test BIOS for a quicker revision A release.
-
Anyone else experiancing this as well?? I also just got a m17x r2 and all the games i've played on it does this chopping flickering thing. bios is A10 and Vbios is also updated to V01 and cleaned old drivers and loaded new drivers. still getting the same thing.
-
jakedizzle and Unprotectedtext - are you sure your system is not in stealth mode? Try toggling the last button on the right side of the touch-sensitive switch panel just to be sure you're not. I have a slew of games on my system and they all work great. The only one that flickers is Crysis and turning on 2x AA makes makes the flickering stop for me.
alexnvidia - thanks for the CAP4. Just grabbed it using the alternative link (AMD link is already blacklisted). +1 Rep for the download and the update on the test BIOS. -
FYI....if you right click on the CCC system tray icon and go to your first card, select crossfire settings and then check Show CrossfireX status icon where available. This will put a small display in the top right corner of your games when Xfire is enabled. Easiest way to tell that Xfire is working.
-
Crossfire is messing up my system as well I think either a Bad Batch of Video Cards were produced, or the cross fire cables. I've noticed that it's all people who have just recently gotten their cards. Myself included. Flickering is going on like crazy.
-
Hey i cannot find the option in the CCC to show this tray-icon. How do i enable the tray (and then the X-fire symbol)?
Thank's -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Right click on your task bar, select properties then on the "taskbar" tab you will see "notification area" button. Cllick "customize"
Click it (single left click) and a new window will pop up. Put a tick in the box "show all icons" at the bottom then "ok"
You will now have all icons in the taskbar. Right click on the AMD one (red dot icon) and hover over "1. Select ati mobility radeon blah blah" - that will extend another menu and at the bottom, select "crossfire settings"
Yet another menu will appear and just click "show crossfire status where applicable"
That should do the trick! -
Okay maybe i wasn't that clear.
i DO NOT have a ati-symbol in the taskbar at all.
How can i enable it? -
Right-click Desktop > CCC > Preferences > Enable System Tray Menu
-
Thank you!
The german translation in the CCC isn't the best
If i translate it back to english it is like this:
"Menu in the information area activation"
That's the tray symbol *lol*
-
Is there some sort of advantage to running the German version of CCC?
-
I got several glitches with this drivers playing Battlefield Bad company two, specially on vide sequences, anyone has the same problem?
-
I found that flickering on my system with 11.2 was being caused by my custom gamma setting. If i switch all my desktop color settings to default the problem goes away in the games affected. I created hot keys to switch between my preferred settings and the settings required for some games and haven't had any issues.
-
Has the latest CAP made anyones BFBC2 flickering worse? Mine is back to its old terrible self
-
kqmaverick i never change my color settings, all was in default, i tested CODBops and i got an horrible lag in some parts with big action, i will definitely going back to dell drivers, this one doesnt work for me.
-
I just got off the phone with AW Tech Support earlier today, and one of the things that the technician seemed very, VERY adamant- to the point of being forceful- was that I should always always be using the Dell drivers. I asked him why and pointed out I had marked performance increases using the latest reference drivers and he told me there were a great many good reasons, but foremost among them was that they really only order the chipset/chassis or whatever from the manufacturer and build the rest themselves, and so the reference drivers don't actually know what to do for a bunch of things like power management etc. and that if I used the latest ATI drivers then I was guaranteed to have a pair of completely fried video cards in a matter of months.
Can anyone shed light on this? I went back to the dell drivers and I'm kind of scared to go back to the later catalysts, but I was definitely seeing heavy performance gains with the newer drivers.. Is what he said true? Reference drivers have the capability to fry our video cards? -
if only those outsourced idiots are knowledgable in this respect. these cards are designed by ATI/AMD, not dell. even dell drivers are reference amd drivers with some dell modification to make them look useful. if dell is responsible enough to release regular driver updates, by all means, use dell's drivers. but the sad truth is, they hardly release any driver updates.
-
Brigadier - if you were using heavily modded drivers, I suppose that it might be possible to damage something. I seriously doubt that using standard AMD reference drivers released specifically for the Mobility platform will hurt anything.

So.. the reference drivers are safe to use? It's just I'm a little unsure and I really don't want to damage my system and the technician spent a good 10 minutes trying to convince me I would only ever use the latest ATI reference drivers again if I wanted to fry my cards.
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
That guy was talking utter rubbish. They are safe to use. If they werent, there wouldnt be hundreds of people using them. Take no heed from someone who obvioulsy doesnt know his head from his toe to put it politely.
-
@Brigadier - yes, they are totally safe. Reference drivers from AMD or NVIDIA are designed for specific hardware applications. While a computer OEM may tweak them to provide proprietary functions, they start out using a reference driver. Unfortunately, most OEMs are not diligent about providing updates. That takes time and costs them money, so updates are once in a blue moon.
I would caution against using modded drivers or drivers that are not intended for the hardware they are being used with. While modded drivers can be very safe, and often are safe, you should pay close attention to temperatures in the same manner you would if you were overclocking.
The support rep was speaking rubbish as steviejones indicated, but probably due to lack of experience or just "following orders". In fairness, they are probably trained to promote use of their own drivers and it is probably close to impossible for the OEM to know what end users are doing to abuse their systems and break things.
So, it would be expected that they would err on the side of caution when speaking to customers by phone. If they say, "Sure, go ahead" not fully understanding what was going to occur and the customer messes things up, then they would have played a part in that. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Agree with Mr Fox totally. +rep for such good advice.
-
Good advice both Stevie and Fox. given rep to stevie but still cant rep mr Fox because system wont allow me.
anyway, just a quick heads up. the test bios x31 we are using right now has issue with battery not charging when plugged in. i have encountered this on more than one occassion, and there is nothing that can be done to restore charging ability. i have both A01 and A02 power bricks and they behave the same. after 30min or so, the system automatically starts charging again. mmm... ChrisM@Dell, if you are following this thread, can you please forward this to your engineering team? thanks -
With 11.2M and CF activated i get flickering / black screens / blue screens on BF BC2
with CF disabled it's all ok. -
Ah okay. Thanks a ton for the great advice!
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Ooops - wrong thread - sorry!
-
The flickering is probably caused by the way the "scissor" method the graphics drivers use to render the screen. Each card is given roughly half the screen, one the top and the other the bottom. It's possible for the halves to get slightly out of sync, and you see the result as horizontal flickering across the middle of the screen.
This goes away when CF is turned off because only 1 card is rendering the entire screen.
It appears that this problem is very dependent on the system and drivers in use. Some people have more issues than others.
You can try turning on VSync to see if that helps. Otherwise you can try a tool like RadeonPro to change the rendering method for an app, to something other than "scissor". -
for best game compatibility, always install CAP together with main driver. CAP tweaks CF settings so you get the most out of your CF setup while maintaining best compatibility. refer to first page for more info.
-
Well guys there is the new 11.3 version out. Not sure if a new CAP is out. Alexnvidia can you plz provide a direct fileserve link for both latest versions. Has any one tried the 11.3 drivers?
-
it's already in this forum since before amd released it officially. here it is, complete with guide to setup and CAP as well. will upload to fileserve as per your request. cheers

Thanks for fileserve. WIll wait for it. When i downloaded 11.2 before from the first page of the thread the file size was 93mb but this one is just 1.3mb How come?
-
try to run the setup and it will download the driver from amd. im having trouble uploading to fileserve, always failed half way through. not sure why. if u still can download it from amd, let me know i will try to upload to some other servers
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
If Alex's links dont work, you can grab 11.3 direct from AMD website - available as a 1.1mb download which includes the downloader/unpackager in the 1.1mb file (basically, it will expand and do the same job one run)
