How about the prying points to take off the plastic screen cover, just held in my clips? A picture pointing out the clip points would be awesome. Think you said you started prying at the bottom in the center? What did u use to pry

It's held by clips reason why I say start from the center bottom is because it's the thickest point and use your hands no tools. I will take a pic of the bezel tonight when I get home.

Found the cable in Stock with Dell for $9.99 pn N392W went ahead and order it they wanted $314 for the 3d 120 hz screen $119 to install. Guess I'll just buy it through laptop screens.com for $98 bucks. My gtx 780 still on backorder through tech support my 770m should work though right? Hoping nothing tricky with the bios not being compatible between the 770m + 3d 120hz?

I called into their part sales. Shocked me when she said it was 9.99 with free shipping, verified pn twice said that was it. I should have everything minus the 3d glasses by weds, not sure we're to get them.

Would you mind telling me which number you called? I looked on the parts page but it just links me to live chat and the rep just told me they are not available again through that :(
I can't seem to find a phone number for the parts department.

EDIT: Actually nm....it won't matter for me any ways as I am in Canada and they don't do phone anything for us anymore :(
EDIT2: The live chat keeps telling me they don't have the part number available, and anyone I phone tells me I have to go through live chat.....I hate technology....just let me speak to someone!

Pretty sure the bezel just pulls off, grab at the bezel just above the Alienware logo and pull gently towards you, I can pull mine off easy enough. A lot easier then the R4 was.

Got an email saying the cable is in production currently out of stock through dell... so we play the waiting game till it arrives. Any pictures of the clips attaching the bezel to the screen? So you pry between the screen and the bezel above the alienware insignia at the bottom of the screen?

Yes, it shouldn't be to hard to do....I have pretty big fingers and I can gently pull at the bezel and get my fingers between the bezel and the screen and pull it back releasing it from the screen. Continue doing this all the way around and it will snap away from the screen. Make sure the screen is fully opened up before trying as it will come away easier where the hinges snap in.

Check for the glasses on Ebay, I found quite a few sets on there for less then half of what most computer parts websites were offering them for. When you can get the glasses for $35 brand new they don't seem to bad anymore. As for the cable, I am hoping that the last rep I talked to will make good on their promise to get in touch with me when it is in stock again but we will see.

I hope this topic isn't too old to be considered necro, but you guys seem like the only people trying to do this upgrade. Thanks for all the info.
I got the 900p Alienware 17 from dell (Doesn't have an 'x' or specify the r/revision #) thinking it'd be cheaper to just manually upgrade the monitor and possibly the GPU in the future, I didn't know so many were having problems with this.

I believe I've found the cable for the 120hz monitor.
    Dell Alienware M17x R3 LCD Cable (17")
The problem is that they use a different product labeling system so I did some crumb trailing and matched it up with this: Dell Alienware M17x R3 LCD 17.3" FHD 1080
I haven't tested it yet as my laptop is set to arrive either Mon. or Tues. so I'll give you guys an update when everything has arrived. Unless you've all already found the right parts.

Edit: Forget what I've said, it's the part. It just ran out of stock.

I wish there was an online tutorial on how to remove the LCD screen from its housing. Because a friend of mine wants me to replace his because his warranty is about to expire the only model I know how to take apart is the alienware 17 X r1-4

It's a very similar process. The AW 17 manual actually has a guide to do so. Might want to check it out.

Ordered my cable on april 3rd from Dell, still waiting on it... Got everything else. So your saying it might be possible that the 120hz cable might be the same from the r4 just listed as a different pn?

It's possible, but don't quote me on it 100%. I don't want someone buying it and losing money + time. I'll be testing things out when it arrives, however if worse comes to worst I'll see if it's possible to manually create or modify the ribbon to match that of the 17 currently offered on Dell.
If I'm not mistaken the screens are all the same, save the anti-glare marketing terms. So making a slight modification or a new ribbon seems reasonable, I may need to find a few diagrams though.

What would be a better choice? A 120hz with a 780m or a standard screen with the newer 880M gpu?

Typically it'd be better to go with the Standard + 880M then manually change the screen later om. However, changing screens appears to be an issue as of late.
    It's up to you though:
    A) You get smooth 120Hz + 3D for movies(if that's your cup of tea) and some games that look nice with it.
    B) You get a few extra fps in games and your laptop will last longer. (Keep in mind that the 780 still performs well due to the fact that Nvidia has lots of money to throw around for developers to optimized their games exclusively for the Nvidia platform.)

Me, I'd go with the 120Hz screen and save myself the headache of this ribbon cable hooplah. The 780 is still pretty powerful and gets profiles for new games consistently so performance isn't an issue. The 880 will kill your battery faster. Also, what's the point of the extra fps if you can't see them on a 60Hz screen.

If you compare the pic I posted of the 17 (2013) cable to the R4. The IR emiiter part is routed differently. If your not using the IR emiiter then I believe it shouldnt be a problem should work, the screen is the same and the connector to the board is the same. But I never tried this as I have the proper cable that comes with the 17 (2103).

That's what I was thinking. It wouldn't make sense for Dell/Alienware to waste the time and money to make a completely different cable just for the sake of it. The main thing I was hoping to achieve was the 120hz functionality, if I can't get the IR to work I can always buy the better 3D vision 2 kit. I believe someone else here said the standard IR wasn't that good anyways.

They are, Dell is just refusing the sell them. They don't want people doing the upgrade is the only logical conclusion I can come to because I find it hard to believe that they never have stock.

And if your in Canada the only recourse you have is the online chat service which is always the same BS, sorry we don't have that part number, but somehow we can still manage to sell new ones.

First make sure it's going to work. Go to the 'stereoscopic 3D' section in the driver CP, you should see 'Alienware 3d vision notebook' in the 'Type' field under 'Set up stereocopic 3D'. Run the test program and if it runs then the emitter and screen type have been detected correctly :D

The glasses are only Nvidia 3D Vision and there is a later version, 3D Vision2. I'll let you read up on the advertising blurb on the NV site but I've had both and the difference was not that large. Keyboard is a little more visible and the glasses area is larger. They are interchangeable without a problem and the 'LightBoost' technology on the V2 is dependent on the screen supporting it. I know the R4 display does but I've not seen it in the latest AW specs, only that it is 'Truelife': Dell TrueLife™ LCD Screens - What is it?

I got a spare pair off ebay and although there is a separate part for spare glasses most of the sellers are selling the full kit which contains an external emitter as well.

Good luck in your search, I'd be very interested in your opinion of the 3D, if you're thinking of TV quality then you're in for a shock!

Got the replacement screen from laptopscreens.com because the first one had a dead pixel, This one seems perfect. Just got her installed didn't realize how freaking awesome 120hz is. 3d glasses are coming in by Friday. I want to say the hardest part was disconnecting the impossible to find cable from the screen, Make sure you pull down towards the bottom of the computer and not up or away.. Getting under the keyboard to access the motherboard was the 2nd biggest pain because of the keyboard cable. Make sure you put the proper long screws when you put the motherboard back in because if you put a long screw in a short screw place you'll be going through the top of your palm rest/keyboard.. Take pictures so you can route the cable and it helps with proper placement of screws. I'm not sure what the deal is with the cable but after a few weeks Dell was able to get me one to my door after several hours on the phone with them they ended up giving me the $10 cable for free. If anyone has questions feel free to ask. Oh im on a09 bios everything installed correctly

Good to hear. Did you check out the driver stereoscopic sub-tree and operation as I mentioned in my last post?

So to summarize: AW17, NV 780m, display from, and hardware ID (device manager)?

Thanks man, I like to gather this info for others :D

That's great. It is working fine. You can't even get that far if the emiter or display type are incorrectly detected :D

Hex left, triangle right. 'No' then select the image on left and confirm the health and safety box if you want to see it. When you get the glasses put your hand through the logo as it pops out of the screen, felt like a stars wars moment, 'help me obi-wan' haha...

For crying out loud i must have the worst luck, received my 3d glasses from ebay $35 bucks and they wont take a charge.. the amber light by the usb charger port flashes but nothing from the top (no green or red light). Any ideas? Any other options for glasses seems like this seems to be a common problem with the nvidia glasses after doing some research?

I just ordered the cable. It was $9.99 plus tax, and shipping. I didn't get free shipping. I actually ordered two cables, just in case. It's cheap enough.

And I already got my email confirmation that the cables shipped. Ordered them only 2 hours ago, and they shipped now.

Just ordered the IR Emitter board too, from eBay.

Do I understand it correctly, we don't need a separate cable for the IR board? It seems to be integrated into the display cable for this model, but R4 and below had a separate cable.

Now my main question, which 3D screen should I order? laptopscreens has a Glossy and Matte. Which should I order? Decisions decisions...

The AW17 2013 model has the ir emitter cable connected to the LCD cable so you dont need to get any additional cables. I would get the factory screen it will be the samsung glossy to prevent any issues with the 3D feature. I posted the part number from Laptopscreens.com that has been verified to work with no issues.

Just remember to run the latest BETA Nvidia drivers 337.50 , the driver fixed the close lid screen stays off on resuming.
