That's some awesome information. I see that problem a lot and no definitive fix.

    I called them. I called this # - 1-877-717-3355

When the automated system asked what I needed, I just said "Order parts".

When the guy got on the phone, he asked me the part #. I told him N392W. He then stated it was a cable for an Alienware 17. He asked me what my service tag was. I told him that wasn't relevant as if you looked up my system you wouldn't find this cable associated with it, as I'm doing an upgrade. He didn't ask me anymore questions really, just onto a credit card # and I got an email about my order.

Here is what my order says:

    N392W Assembly,Cable,Embedded Display Port,Full High Definition,3D,AW17R1

Oh and I was wrong, it did not ship yet. What 'Shipped' was my eGift card that will be sent via email for $0.10. I guess you get some money back on parts sales, I get to spend $0.10 on some other part. I'll be sure not to spend it all on one part.

The cable still shows "In production" with an estimated delivery date of 4/30.2014"

Ah ok, the phone seems to be the way to go but I can't order parts over the phone in Canada because apparently we are not special enough and they axed phone sales for Canada, I literally have no choice but to use the stupid online chat.

No only the NV ones. Did you try leaving them on charge overnight. When I got mine out recently they had no power and when I plugged them in they would not power up, but the led was flashing. In the morning they worked, this has happened with two sets I have...

That just sucks, maybe the supplier got a bad batch?

AFAIK they only made two revisions of the glasses, 3DVision and 3DVision 2. The V2 glasses are a different design and have a slightly larger lens area - apparently they fit over glasses better. Both are interchangeable but only a display that supports 'LightBoost' can use the full upgrade features on V2.

I Wish you better luck this time around and hope it's worth all the aggravation for you when you see it!

This topic has peeked my curiosity, prompting me to possibly upgrade my screen. If I have this right, the process is pretty simple:

    1. Call 1-877-717-3355 and order Part # N392W
    2. Order Samsung Glossy 120hz Screen (Laptopscreens.com Item ID: 653787) from laptopscreens.com
    3. Order Nvidia 3D Glasses from Ebay
    4. Something about a driver stereoscopic sub-tree and operation... I need clarification on this please.
    5. Install and GTG?

    What did I miss?

On step 4, the stereoscopic sub-tree (that me even be missing) will appear in the nvidia control panel when the emmiter and display are correctly detected. The Display Type will state 'Alienware 3D Vision Notebook' (or might say something else, very interested to know?). The 3D Vision wizard should run but without the glasses you would need to guess your way through it.

If this is all there and the 3D test runs after you complete the install, then in all likelihood the 3D is working fine and time get the glasses :D.

I can't comment on the parts though...

Got it. I thought #4 was something I had to do prior to the install. Imma go ahead and take a dive and try this out. I'll do a full write up with pics once I get the parts and what not.

You still want to order the IR emitter - Search ebay for XX7CM. I'm not 100% sure that's the right one, but I think it is.

And FYI My cable order from dell was delayed, now has an Estimated Delivery Date of 5/5/2014.

You'll want a small screw about the same size on the underside of the laptop for the emitter. Make a YouTube video and laptopscreens refunds you $20

And the actual wait for the cable! Mine has been delayed again until 5/8. This time they sent me an email and I had to confirm I still wanted to wait for it. If I didn't confirm, they would have cancelled the order.

I had this same problem and they ended up cancelling my order after 3 1/2 weeks and tried to tell me it was discontinued and no longer in production and unable to acquire. You should call Dell and speak to a manager, if it helps my order number 604614905 . It was weird because they cancelled my order then I talk to a service manager explained to them what it was and they had it to me the next day after saying it would take a few weeks to get it. They have several warehouses I guess and it wasn't available at one.

Mine didn't but you might. Why do you want it - you don't need it to disable the iGPU since it's already disabled. You could (and I did!) brick your machine if you mess with the video output on a 120hz machine :(

I used the unlocked bios to try to enable the iGPU without knowing how it worked or why Dell disabled it. I had to blind flash it to get it back - a very scary process which includes multiple restarts and around 30 beeps at one point!

Not sure you can get access to voltages (CPU) trough an unlocked bios but on some processors you can access the clocks and drop them down if you wanted with an unlocked BIOS. The only way to access the GPU voltages is through a modded vBIOS and the voltages are coded into it by the modder. You can request one (and pay) from an expert on techinferno.

So my order was cancelled twice. I had them refer to the order # you had above, and they said that order along with another order of yours was both cancelled and they said they show nothing shipped to you.

Do you know if there was a different order number for the product you finally got shipped? Did you have any paperwork with it? Perhaps it was shipped from a different department or under a different part #? Anything you can do would be helpful. I'm having a real hard time getting this cable. Seems like Dell is treating the cable like gold!

So I have talked with Alienware again only to be told...AGAIN, that they can't get me the cable because of a parts shortage and they have no ETA on when it will be available. So I broke down and ordered this one...

Wholesale Product Snapshot Product name is VAS00 LVDS CABLE DC02C004000

We shall see if it works or not. I matched it to a previous comment in this thread that says the cable is also listed as cable number DC02C004000 so hopefully this will match N392W as well.

When it gets here I will order the LCD and test it out.

So has anyone successfully installed their screens from laptopscreen and gotten their 3D to work? i just recently ordered the screen as for the cable iam a bit confused by the conversation. The one that is in the standard 60hz screen wont work with the new 120hz screen unless you purchase the 10 dollar cable from dell? And that would include the Ir emitter in the same cable? Not sure if i understood the discussion correctly.

The cable for the 120hz and the 60hz screens are indeed different so you will need to purchase a new cable, and that is where people run into issues....finding one. You can try phoning Dell and if you get lucky then yes they will sell you one for $9.99, but if your unlucky like I am and happen to live in Canada, then you get no phone sales and you have to use the online chat and they will tell you every time that the part is unavailable. There are quite a few people that have bought off ebay but those cables are usually severely overpriced compared to what Dell chargers. I JUST like....20 minutes ago got my package from aliexpress and it is indeed the cable I need. I searched using the part number located earlier in the thread, you will have to look for that ( Found it ....DC02C004000). The good news is because I never got a response from the seller and it only listed off the secondary part number this cable that I got does indeed have the dell part number on it as well so I have the right cable :) so I will be ordering the LCD today and probably the IR emitter as well.

As for the IR emitter it is a separate piece but all the 17's have the spot for them. The part number for the IR emitter is XX7CM and shouldn't be hard to find. You can also buy the Nvidia glasses on ebay for a much better price then somewhere like Amazon, they are usually about $35 on ebay.

I noticed that emitter is for the R3 Alienware, is that going to be the same part for the new 2014 versions? I wasn't specific when i made that post, as i have the new model 17 "Alienware 17" or as some say the "r5". As you have said with the live chat they have been doing the same to me, i do live in the US so maybe i should give them a call and see if they will sell it to me over the phone that would be great.

Yes it is the same part. Earlier in the thread there was a guy that has upgraded his Alienware 17 and a friends with the 3D screens and that is the part number he used, I grabbed the link directly from his post. he lists off all the part numbers and the screen he used, and all is working as expected.

I have ordered my screen and it has shipped, should be here in the next few days. The IR emitter is also shipped via ebay so that will be a few weeks probably. The glasses I can find on ebay are all going for $60 so I am going to wait and test it with my buddy's glasses first and make sure all is working as expected before I order those. I did this more so for the better screen then the 3D aspect of it all, but I will get them eventually.
I also plan on doing the instructional video on installing the LCD and getting $20 back from the screen supplier :D , and I figured since people were asking on this thread how to do it , it might benefit us here as well.

It really makes me wonder what the hell is so special about the US that they are the only ones that seem to be able to get that part via dell spare sales. I have been trying for MONTHS and finally just gave up and went the route that I did.....I tried online chat which is all I have access to I don't even know how many times and was met by the same response every time.

    Hi
I have a questions about 120hz 3D screen for the new Alienware 17
Is there a greater load at the CPU when I use the screen with the refresh rate at 120Hz? Using my cpu less effort when using the standard 60hz? I am thinking particularly at some tests like 3DMark 11 and 3DMark Vantage.

If you asking in terms of the intel internal graphics processor for the optimus technology it doesn't work at all. If you mean it as does you CPU have to work harder to display in 120hz then i don't believe it should, the GPU would be what would have to work harder.

I've given up on it for now.

But if you somehow get it, please tell me how. Who you contacted and what you said, because I have had NO success.

Will do, i paid for 2nd day shipment it says on the order page its in production the guy i talked to gave me his direct contact email that he said to contact him directly about. So if my status changes to shipped (i assume monday i should see a change) i will let you know. I hope they don't pull anything because i had ordered the emitter and glasses today as well once i placed the order for the cable. I was surprised how simple it was if it goes as smooth as it seems its going iam going to order quite a few more and possibly be able to help you guys out.

Got my screen in and installed it using the new cable. All is up and running but the screen has two dead pixels in it :( They are kind of off to the side so they are not right in my field of view or anything like that and I don't really feel like sending it back just for that if I am not ever going to see it short of looking at a black screen. It would also require me to rip the laptop down again and put the original screen back in and there is no guarantee that the next one will be any better or have not have dead pixels right in the middle or something.

As others have said before, the difference is quite noticeable with the better screen! The first game of LoL I played was spectacular....it seemed more smooth and everything just looks more animated....can't really explain it but I can definitely see a huge improvement. My emitter is still en route so I can't test the 3D yet but I will get to it once the emitter gets here.

The install took a little over an hour but I was watching netflix and was coming off night shifts when I installed it so yeah haha...it wasn't to bad, I will post some pics later if anyone is interested. There are a lot of screws to pull out and you have to remember where they go or just read the labels so you make sure the short screws go back where they should go. The screen itself is super easy to get out but the cable required the keyboard to come out which is kind of a pain on these models.

That's great to hear. Can't rep you atm but will do ;)

It's so difficult to say exactly what is better but it simply is visibly...better!

I hope the 3D bit installs OK and you get to try that as well. Your 780m should eat it up and give decent FPS which is often the downfall of 3D :(.

    Good luck.

Laptopscreen.com has been really good, I got ahold of them about my stuck pixels and after trying some software to get them unstuck they are allowing me to exchange it :) . The new one should be here Friday, I will swap it out and ship the old one back and they will credit me back the first screen, so all in all I am happy. Good company to deal with so far :) i would really recommend them over Ebay if you have the choice. They ship the same day I have bought both screens and they are quick to respond should you have any concerns.

EDIT 1: I got my new screen in and it is flawless, no problems at all.

Does anyone know which glasses come with the Alienware's when you order the 3D disaply....are the 3D Vision 1 or 3D vision 2 glasses? The first gen are of course cheaper but I don't know if the 2nd gen is compatible....

You know i'm not really sure, but i went with the 3D vision 2 even if all the features don't work the bigger glasses are better imo. Btw update on my cable. It was delayed just as what happened to tobyg and a few others. I'm going to call them tomorrow and complain about it because the guy i talked too said they were in stock and should be at my house by Monday. Now they are saying the 30th, i'm not dealing with this run around BS they are trying to pull i'm going to call them tomorrow about it and give them a little piece of my mind =D. Hopefully they get them to me asap. I have the screen emitter and the glasses right next to me as we speak all i need now is that stupid cable. I can't believe how ridiculous it is getting a hold of one. And getting it from other sources the price is crazy and the shipping time even worse.

The R3 came with V1 and the R4 with V2. I tested both and there is no compatibility issue - or TBH any big difference! The glasses for V2 are a little larger so external light is less visible and the Lightboost feature (relies on a compatible display) of V2 does make the keyboard a little more visible.

    ;)

So pretty much a question of whether I want to spend more money on the glasses or not hmm.....I have tried the V2 glasses and my buddy has a sager with the 3D display. I will probably go with V2 if that is the case, but I will wait and try his glasses for a day or 2 first before I bother. I really did just want the better screen but I might as well have it all in case I do want to use it :p

Spot on. You might find it is something you really like on some games.

V2 is more of a fine-tune of an already (IMO) excellent system. It's just been waiting for mobile GPU's to be powerful enough to give decent frame rates.

Having used both for quite a while I can say for me I wouldn't pay a premium for them. There is also a style issue between the versions, if anyone gets to see you :p

hey guys just want to let you know that exactly what happened to tobyg happened to me, at first. They delayed my order 3 times i finally called them yesterday and they gave me a bit of a run around till i asked to speak with a manager. Once i got to the manager they said their "current supplier" didn't have any but they can check another and it might be refurbished. I told them it didn't matter, long story short cable was sent out same day ill have it Monday. Unfortunately my computer has to go back to the shop, soon as it comes back in (about a week or so) ill let you guys know how the installation goes =D. This time it actually shows as "shipped" and not "in production".

Let me know if you get the cable. And PM me the # of the person you talked to. This is frustrating. I ordered 3 times and always cancelled, and they keep saying it's unavailable. I spent many hours trying to get this cable.

    Thanks!

I got it today its good to go. Honestly i started by calling 1800-alienware and from there i got transferred all around. I told them how ive been given the run around and been trying to get the cable for months. That its a replacement cable for my laptop they tried telling me they didn't have it in stock i got really annoyed and asked to speak with a manager. After that it took about 2 mins to have them say they were gonna expedite me the cable. They sent it out same day overnight shipping.

Just be prepared to spend some time when it comes in as it is going to require you to pull a large chunk of the laptop apart. The keyboard has to come off ( obviously ) and you will have to pull the LCD off of the hinges to get the cable routed through as it won't fit otherwise. make sure to pay attention where the screws came out and when your putting them back in the holes are marked so you don't stick a long screw in a short hole and damage your palm rests :)

So i got the computer back hook up everything and i just get a black-screen when i turn on the computer. Computers on i don't hear it loading to the windows screen but when i connect the old monitor back to it everything works fine. The integrated graphics is disabled. Idk what the issue can be. Any ideas?
