Well I'm done trying to figure it out . I'm going to sell my 17 with 980m and 770m for 2,000 on ebay or to someone who is intersted. And go buy a clevo or something else that already has the 980m installed.laptop still has 2.5 years warranty.

be specific! maybe see about installing win 8.1 as much as you don't like it? -
I got driver to install from Eurocom and the it show nvidia gtx 980m under device manager so I thought I was golden. But windows applications stopped responding and acting funny. So I now gpu is good but now it's driver issues and I'm just tired of messing with it.

Going to test clevo 980m in alienware m17x R4, m18x R2, AW17 - Page 135
but also maybe now you can disable the intel GPU (safe mode) and reboot to see if it will boot and not crash. try that before doing J95's suggestion. -
I'm done for now. I only got 2 days off and I'm not going to spend it in front of my computer trying to get it to work.

Player2, how much personal stuff do you have on the OS drive? i suggest a full system reformat and install as you don't have any idea what's causing the os to crash. if you have a spare drive, use it.
this is a 2nd last resort - the last resort is testing with windows 8.1. -
I've already did a complete restore 2 times to factory state. I already pulled the 980m and put it back in the box it came in. I reinstalled my 770m and am reinstalling my games so I can just enjoy my laptop. I know the 980m works I just don't have the patience or time to spend trying to figure it out . Thanks for all your help and suggestions I do appreciate it.i plan to sell the 980m for $750 and my laptop for $1500 and buy something new that I can just turn on and play with. It's hard with kids and family to find time.
-
anyway, i might tempt fate and see when i am able to get one in february. -
Yea I don't know. It's fine with 770m . I got 980m to show up in device manager just fine but my computer would just do weird things . I'm sure someone with lots of knowledge would be able to sort it all out . Might just be settings in bios or something simple but there's just way to many variables for someone with my limited knowledge of computers. We're I screwed up was I should of bought the best gpu there was at my time off purchase . Live and learn. My next laptop I will buy the best gpu available at that time and I should be able to squeeze at least 2 to 3 years out of it.

If you really want to get a Clevo 7 series go ahead you can have the 980M run in legacy mode & 0 throttling plus there's also Prema unlocked BIOS mod too, else try T|I or use Mr Fox's 344.75 / Desktop driver mods they are in the M18x forum.

Yes prema has edited the system bios for systems not to need an inf mod.

not sure if i should get a 980M or not now
-
Yea I was looking at the sagars.
The maxed out alienware 17 (castrated bga filth garbage) as Mr fox would put it is $2600. Non upgradable . 180 watt psu. (What the hell alienware).
Then I configured a sagar np9772-s.
Desktop prossesor,980m 8 gig not 4 like dell, 512 gig ssd, 1t 7200 HDD not 5400 like dell , 2 year warranty, 330 watt psu, windows 7 , blue ray drive . Dell no longer offer blue ray. Oh I almost forgot you can upgrade everything. Dell you have to throw it away and buy a new one. All for the same price as the alienware 17.lol
Really .!!!!!!!!
you should of added one more picture of the new alienware 17 laptop on a table with a jar of Vasa line next to it and write 1 included with every order.
By by alienware . I'm already in the middle of posting all my stuff on graigslist and ebay. -
with all of Player2's and Billyxq's issues with the 980M and discussing the idea with Mr. Fox has convinced me NOT to buy the 980M and go the same route as Player2: buying a clevo/sager.
$1300 CAD is not worth it for guaranteed hardware compatibility issues and I have a bit more experience with it than Player2...even Mr. Fox has more than me and he's also inclined to go clevo.
so that's my decision - NOT BUYING THE 980M!!!! -
I think you made a very wise descision. See you over at the sager/clevo forums.

so i'm gonna make use of the 780M while i have it and probably buy an xbox one -
It's very unfortunate that Nvidia dumped this Maxwell with serious power limiations and UEFI requirements with the Alienwares, I'm also waiting for the Clevo to release a new X99 based SLI successor for both P377SMx and P570WMx machines else I'll grab an M18x R2 and go with a 780M SLI.
Alienwares are no more enthusiast machines who care about their customers they are just a normal notebook brand now no more DTRs from Alienware they should be ashamed of this. -

The Alienware 17 came with the 3d screen a 4930mx a 780m 32gb 1600 ram 256 msata 2x750gb hdd and 3d glasses for 1635 shipped. I sold the 780m for $375 and I bought the 980m for $720. The whole thing cost me $1980 and I may be able to upgrade later.
I won't be trying sli in my m18x r2 for a while as that seems to be the place where these cards act up. But so far there has been no throttling or anything like that in games or in benches and it's been almost 2 weeks now. I use rtss osd to make sure and although it's power hungry the 980m overclocks well. The only thing that's gone wrong is i managed to brick my bios on day 1 due to me trying to treat the 4930mx like it's a 3940xm so instead of 4.5ghz it's sitting at 4.2ghz. -
either way i'm gonna take the safe route and get a clevo instead and sell off the AW17!

And for that throttling, It seems great for now without any hassles with the Maxwell , Plus only you had a 120Hz machine with a 980M here all of the others who upgraded to 980M's are using a 60Hz setup & most of the upgrades are done on M17x R4.
Seems like it's ok for now except that Win8 UEFI crap, prolly that won't get fixed ever on the AWs.....TBoneSan likes this. -
As long as your happy to live with fully UEFI bios and just gaming (unlocked vbios causing issues for m18x r2), 980m works fine. I have had a pretty good run so far.

sorry guys but i am a beginner at this
i want to upgrade from 780 to 980 on an alienware 17 r4 or r5 i guess the first new model (just like the one in the video 2013)
i saw the video tutorial , everything looks straight and clear ,
is there any bios modding or just the drivers for the video drivers ? and what is exactly the optimums and why its not working probably ?
does it matter if i work on windows 8.1 ?
and i willing to but the 980m fro HID is there a cheaper place ? and can i sell my 780m ?Last edited: Feb 14, 2015 -
alienware 2013 is the r5. You don't need a BIOS mod but modifying it like in the video yes.
You got a 780m so you already got a 100W heatsink and 240W ac. You will need to mod driver, just follow the tuto.
In TechInferno forum, they got difficulties to make it work on Windows 7 but i think for an alienware 60Hz, it should work too.
Optimus is an option that your laptop will decide whenever to launch Nvidia or intel GPU. there is optimus mode or dedicated mode=laptop always with Nvidia GPU.
It's woking half in dedicated for 2 reasons: first some driver will not make able to start windows and it will result a black screen. Also, in dedicated mode, you will less enjoy your gpu because you will lost power: In 3dmark 2011 in dedicated you will got like 9500 or even less points. In optimus, you can have 10000 and more points.
To make it work with more luck on dedicated, the laptop should have this option enabled on CMD with WS 8.1:
- cmd (Admin)
Code:
bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
->Reboot-> F8 -> select 'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement' -> Install drivers.
- cmd (Admin)
-
I didn't need to mod driver ... I downloaded it from laptopvideo2go and you just have to replace the inf which has already been modded when you download the driver...
