I'm having the exact same issues. Installation went well, installed the drivers, card detected, no problem. But now the system is just soooo slow, everything hangs. Games won't start, it takes me 2 minutes to reboot (and this is using a SSD). I'm going to try a few of the drivers mentioned here (so far I've only tried Mr. Fox's modded drivers). If these don't work, the 980 is going back to Eurocom, the AW17 is going on eBay, and I'm just going to keep using this ASUS G751JY that I snagged for the stupidly low price of $1500 CAD.

    Update: Success!

Installed the default 347.52 drivers, just using the modded .inf Darcoder provided in his OP. Everything seems to work fine, though I didn't install Geforce Experience either, in case that was a contributing factor.

Only issue now is that the fans run rather loud.

Only issue now is performance. Here's the AW17 vs the ASUS G751JY I have (both running the GTX 980M).

    Firestrike
    AW17: 7860
    G751: 8460

    3DMark11
    AW17: P10343
    G751: P11376

I take it this is a result of the modded drivers and unofficial support for the 980M in the AW17? Any way to improve performance? It's basically 10% slower than the G751.

Glad to see the you got the card working.
The way my 17 was acting with the 980m installed I was afraid it was only a matter of time before the card quit working or something happens to it. So I abandoned my mission and sold my card and Laptop on ebay while they were still both working and bought a clevo with 980m sli. I didn't want to get rid of my alienware but know that I have I wish I would of bought the clevo to begin with. Alienware is built a little better than clevo but the functionality of the clevo outdoes the alienware and I will happily sacrifice more functionality for build quality any day. With the money we spend on these things we should be able to have both build quality and functionality ( hint hint alienware ) . I'm very happy with my Clevo I have now. I think the nbr member Billy something burnt up 2 980m's in his alienware 17 in a short period of time. He got it to work but benchmark score were a little bit lower than they should be like your experiencing.
Hope it works out great for you . Keep us posted on how its working out.

I'm somewhat in the same boat. I was excited to get an AW machine and upgrade it. I just didn't figure it would

    a) Require the effort it did (I'm used to working on custom desktop machines)
    b) Suffer reduced performance compared to other machines with the same specs

It's especially sad to see those performance numbers given the AW17 is running the 8GB version of the 980M, while the G751JY (which performs better) is using the soldered 4GB version.

I just realised this was my very first 3D mark score with unlocked vbios. The card had no overclock what so ever yet:
    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/9448077
This is 3d Mark Fire stike with no overclock, just unlocked vbios:
    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5937752?
3d Mark Fire strike with some overclock:
    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5953876?

I wonder why you are getting the lower scores on a newer machine. Did you flash your 980m vbios? I had some problems before flashing vbios, bet after the flash everything improved a lot both in the games and benchmarks. The card does not always hold the clocks when overclocked, which is something I need to sort out next.

No, I didn't flash any vbios. Do you have one in particular you would suggest?

All I did was uninstall the drivers in safe mode using DDU, install the GPU, then install the modded 347.52 drivers.

    Nice, glad tuto was helpfull.
My score is 10586 with i74900qm and nothing overclocked. ( i need to share that i didnt earn anypoints upgrading from 4700 to 4900qm^^ )
    I think using svl7 bios will boost 3dmark11 with +- 2k score.
And yes, i prefer the design of alienware but clevo will be my next system for easy upgradibility if they still launch out mxm cards^^

Please can you share your gaming temp with 980m? :)

Svl7 vbios has higher stock clocks to begin with, it also unlocks overclockig and overvolting to support the higher clocks. And you can see how much of the performance gain it gives ;) I would highly recommend flashing your vbio and testing it for yourself. Even if you do not like it, you could flash it back to stock vbios. Just make sure to save a copy of a stock vbios before any flashing. The flashing instructions and vbios file and required version of nvflash can be found on Tech inferno forum.

Nice result but you got a heatsink of 75 or 100W ( you had before 765m or 770/780m gpu )?
    me for 3dmark 2011:
    CPU: 72 (i7 4900qm): LiquidUltra
    GPU:70 with .347 driver: ic7diamonds

I'm using a 100w heatsink and Gelid GC Supreme TIM.

I'm happy with the GPU temps, but not sure why my CPU is running so hot. I re-pasted a second time, getting slightly better results. I'll keep trying.

Gelid GC Supreme is similar to the Extreme, and is very easy to apply. It is more forgiving than IC Diamond, in that you're more likely to get a good application.

and i get a little better result, from 10500 to 10800 without GPU oc.
I still didn't test in game.

Less performance.. you meaned battery life, if about that, my battery kinda die in the same period of upgrading to 980m but i was constantly on ac.. i instal a new battery and life is back. I didnt have 'driver stopped working' till now, even with the new driver. If its your case, uninstal with ddu from safe mode and reinstall driver.
To oc, instal nvidia inspector and a sub case down will ask you to oc your gpu..but dont play with numbers right ;) you could damage your gpu.

Yes, I do as well, Optimus does not function correctly with the 980M installed. Causing the battery to power the GPU concurrently with the Intel GPU.

The vbios increases default clocks to a higher level and pushes the card more. Also you may have to increase the voltage as well to keep it stable to 1.05v.

So i play a bit and i'm verrrrrrrry happy :)
I test it with bf hardline, and fps increase prety well and MAX gpu was 71°c, 1°c differences from clock vbios.
I'm in optimus and for my side, it's very good no bug.

What do you mean by stable? idk because in games and in bench it was not throotling and temp increase only 1°c from not Oc, i'm quite impress because idk if its my mod heatsink or if it's the gpu itself.

Stable as in if it starts to crash you might need a voltage increase. ( as in games start crashing etc ) otherwise you should be great :).

Who has 120Hz screen and a 980m working on an AW 17 ?
Why do people keep saying it works ? Then some keep saying it does not work ?
Is there any explanation somewhere, to make it work ? Cam we just use an external monitor hooked up to start the computer ?

    Okok
also, i notice after puting back .88, while i try gaming, i had some geometric forms appears to the screen. I just restart and its gone. I know its the kinda result of overclocking too much but as i just use slv7 bios, i was wondering if its a bug or voltage wasnt enaugh. But now its gone and i keep 1v, so idk
